You've probably heard the term "Roasting Chestnuts on a Burning Fire," but do you know how to actually cook chestnuts yourself? Chestnuts have a warm, potato-like taste with a nutty taste and chestnuts are perfect to eat in the winter months, holidays, or just as an everyday snack. While roasting chestnuts is the most common way to cook them, you can also boil them or cook them in the microwave. If you want to know how to cook chestnuts, just follow these steps.

Method 1 of 4: Cooking Chestnuts in the Microwave
Step 1. Take a handful of chestnuts five to six times
Step 2. Split each chestnut in half
Place on a cutting board and cut into pieces with a sharp knife. Splitting the chestnuts in half will help them cook faster.
Step 3. Cook the chestnuts in the microwave with the heat setting on "potato" or the one used for cooking potatoes
Chestnuts are just like potatoes when cooked. This step can take anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, depending on the power of your microwave.
Step 4. Serve
Enjoy these chestnuts for granted and nibble straight out of the shell or scoop them out with a small spoon first.
Method 2 of 4: Roasting Chestnuts in the Oven
Step 1. Preheat your oven to 205ºC
Step 2. Cut an X shape into the flat part of each chestnut
Use a sharp knife for this process. This will make the chestnuts roast faster, allowing steam to escape from the chestnuts. You can also simply pierce each chestnut with a fork a few times.
Step 3. Place the chestnuts on a baking sheet
You can also place it directly on the grill with the cut side up. Sprinkle a little water over the beans to help with roasting.
Step 4. Roast the chestnuts for 15 to 20 minutes
Bake them until they are soft and the shells come off easily. While they're roasting, stir the chestnuts with a spoon or spatula every few minutes so they don't burn.
Step 5. Crush the chestnut shells
Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the chestnuts to cool and then wrap them in a towel and knead until the skins crumble. Leave the nuts in the towel for five minutes.
Step 6. Peel the nuts
Do this while the chestnuts are still warm to make it easier. Remove the inner shell along with the shell. If there are nuts that are difficult to peel, you can heat them briefly for a few minutes until they are ready to peel.
Step 7. Serve
Enjoy these nuts on their own while they are still hot and delicious.
Method 3 of 4: Roasting Chestnuts Over the Flames
Step 1. Rinse the chestnuts
Rinse them under cold water to remove dirt.
Step 2. Mark the shell
Mark the peanut shells before you place them in the pan.
Step 3. Put the beans in the pot
Step 4. Prepare the fire
Make sure that there is a bed of smoldering charcoal where you can put the pot, whether it's on the fireplace or on the campfire.
Step 5. Place the pan over the coals for 5 minutes
This step should be enough to toast one side of the chestnuts. Gently shake the pan about every minute to even out the heat.
Step 6. Turn the nuts over
After five minutes, use the pots to lift the pan, flip the beans over, and place them back on the heat.

Method 4 of 4: Boiling Chestnuts
Step 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil
Step 2. Cut an X shape on one side of the shell from the chestnuts
Use a sharp knife to cut an X shape into the chestnuts. This will make the beans boil faster. Boiling chestnuts won't make them as delicious or flavorful when roasted, but boiling is a great way to soften chestnuts.
Step 3. Soak the chestnuts for 5 to 10 minutes
Step 4. Let it cool
Wait at least 2 to 3 minutes until the chestnuts are cool enough for you to handle.
Step 5. Peel the shell and peel off the nuts
Step 6. Serve
Enjoy these chestnuts on their own or with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon of melted butter.
