Ever heard of the term “steamed milk”? For milk coffee fans, you most likely know that the method used to produce a glass of hot milk as a coffee mixture, along with the foam, is steaming. So, how do you steam milk if you don't have a special steamer like you see in many coffee shops? Don't worry, because in fact milk can still be steamed in less than 5 minutes using home cooking utensils. After steaming, the warm and foamy milk can be directly mixed into various favorite drinks or enjoyed straight away!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Steaming Milk in a Glass Cup in the Microwave
Step 1. Pour the milk into a glass cup
Basically, this technique can be practiced for any type of milk, although milk with low fat content will actually be easier to form foam. Pour the milk of your choice into the glass, then put the lid on the glass tightly.
- Espresso or flat white with a standard serving requires about 120 ml of milk.
- Pour in the milk until it fills half the glass or less so that there is room for the foam to form.
Step 2. Beat the milk until the texture is frothy
Keep whisking the milk until it has doubled in volume, about 30-60 seconds. If using high-fat milk, it will likely take 30 seconds longer to produce the same amount of foam.
Make sure the glass is tightly closed before shaking it so the milk doesn't spill
Step 3. Heat uncovered milk in the microwave for 30 seconds
Open the lid of the glass, then reheat the milk to the highest temperature for 30 seconds. Very hot temperatures will warm the milk and form a foam that floats on the surface of the glass.
Step 4. Pour the milk and foam into the cup
Hold the milk foam with the back of the spoon, then pour the milk into the cup. After that, take the milk foam with a spoon and place it on the surface of the cup as the top layer of milk.
Milk steamed with this method will have a very similar consistency to milk steamed using a special steamer
Method 2 of 3: Steaming Milk with Stove and French Press
Step 1. Warm the milk until it reaches 60 degrees Celsius on the stove
Pour the milk into a small saucepan, then turn the stove on to medium heat. While the milk is cooking, dip the tip of a kitchen thermometer into the saucepan to measure the temperature of the milk. If the temperature of the milk has reached 60 degrees Celsius, immediately turn off the stove.
- If you don't have a kitchen thermometer, heat the milk until it's warm enough, but not too hot to the touch.
- Lower the heat if the milk starts to look boiling.
Step 2. Pour the milk into the French press
Before pouring the milk, make sure the French press is completely clean. Otherwise, the aroma and taste of previous drinks, such as coffee, will contaminate the taste of your milk. After making sure the French press is clean, lift the lid of the French press and slowly pour the warmed milk into it.
If you have a pump frother or a special tool to produce milk foam, feel free to use it
Step 3. Push the French press lever up and down until the milk looks frothy
Hold the lid of the French press with one hand, then use the other hand to move the lever of the French press very quickly for 60 seconds, or until the consistency of milk is to your liking.
If you don't have a French press, beat the milk with a mixer or process the milk in a blender for 30 seconds
Step 4. Pour the warm, frothy milk into the cup
Fill a cup with hot chocolate or coffee, then pour the steamed milk over it. If you want, milk that is creamy and rich in calcium can also be enjoyed directly without any addition.
Method 3 of 3: Steaming Milk with Microwave and Beater
Step 1. Warm the milk in the microwave for 30 seconds
First, pour the milk into a container such as a glass or heatproof bowl. Then, set the microwave on the highest setting for 30 seconds to heat the milk. This technique can actually be used for many types of milk, although the time it takes will be slightly shorter if you use low-fat milk.
Ceramic and glass are the safest materials to microwave
Step 2. Beat the milk until the texture is frothy
Use a manual or electric mixer to process the milk until it has doubled in volume, about 30 seconds. If using an electric whisk, use the lowest speed to avoid spilling the milk.
If you don't have a whisk, try processing the milk in a blender for 30 seconds
Step 3. Mix the milk into your favorite hot drink, or enjoy it straight without any addition
Slowly pour the milk into the glass of your favorite hot drink, then stir with a spoon until well combined. If you want, creamy milk can also be enjoyed directly without any additions while the temperature is still warm.
