Double crochet (dc) is one of the most basic and useful stitches in crochet. Once you get the hang of it, and it usually doesn't take long, you can use it to get creative with sweaters, blankets (also known as afghans), scarves, decorative items, and many other crafts.

Method 1 of 2: Double Stab American Version

Step 1. Tie the yarn with the hook (yarn over / “yo”) from back to front

Step 2. Insert the hook into the puncture hole, or chain, you want
Usually, a double stitch will be made into the hole closest to the hook. Or if you're starting with a basic chain, insert the hook into the fourth hole. To be sure, pay attention to the pattern you use.

Step 3. Tie the thread with a hook (yarn over / “yo”) and slowly bring the thread through the stitched hole
In other words, pull the thread through the hole you just entered the hook. You will now have three (3) circular holes on the hook.

Step 4. Hook the thread with the hook (yarn over / “yo”) and pull it through the first two (2) looped holes on the hook

Step 5. Hook the thread with the hook (yarn over / “yo”) and pull it through the last two (2) looped holes on the hook

Step 6. You have completed one (1) American double crochet (dc)
Your hook should still have one (1) hole left.
Method 2 of 2: Double Stab English Version

Step 1. Insert your hook into the puncture hole, or chain, of your choice
Usually, a double stitch will be made into the hole closest to the hook. Or if you're starting with a basic chain, insert the hook into the second stitch. To be sure, pay attention to the pattern you use.

Step 2. Tie the thread with the hook (yarn over / “yo”) and twist the neck of the hook toward you

Step 3. Pull the hook wrapped around the thread through the puncture hole
You should now have two (2) circular holes on the hook.

Step 4. Tie the thread with the hook (yarn over / “yo”) one more time and pull it through the two looped holes in the hook
