This origami bunny is cute and fun. You can draw on your bunny, you can create a rabbit family, and you can even make your bunny jump! Although the rabbit in method 2 can't jump like in method 1, it looks more like the rabbit you're used to seeing. See Step 1 below (of either way) to get started!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Making a Jumping Rabbit
Step 1. Take an index card or other rectangular paper
Anything can be used, as long as it's not a square. You can use other items such as business cards, dollar bills, or whole pieces of paper. Note that smaller pieces of paper are more likely to jump, but larger ones are easier to fold.
Origami paper is best, especially since origami produces neat patterns. Two different colored sides can sometimes make folding errors more visible
Step 2. Fold the top right corner of the index card diagonally down to the opposite side
Step 3. Open the paper
Then fold the left corner over to the opposite side, as before.
Step 4. Open the paper
You can see the two folds forming an X.
Step 5. Bend the paper back past the center of the X
This will create a rectangle on the edge of your paper.
Step 6. Open the paper again
You should be able to see an X with a center line and some small triangles appearing. Understand?
Step 7. Press the sides of the triangle inward with your fingers
This triangle will stick out towards the midpoint. This will give your rabbit the ability to jump.
Step 8. Minimize the crease by pressing each side inward and the top down
The paper should now look like a house. Rectangle at the bottom, triangle at the top.
Step 9. Fold the two sides of the "house" inward, so that the sides meet in the middle
The side will be under the tip of the triangle above. It's okay to leave a small space between each side. Now the "house" should look like an arrow.
Step 10. Rotate the arrow up and fold the long bottom up, almost all over
The tip of the "arrow" should remain visible.
Step 11. Take a little more than half the rectangle and fold it down
Make strong folds with your fingers.
Step 12. Turn the paper back
Then, fold the two ends of the triangle to the center. Can you see his ears?
Step 13. Curl the ends back to make the ears
Now that you know where the bunny's face is, feel free to draw the face!
Step 14. Make your bunny jump by lightly pressing the space behind his ear
Then, let go! How many jumps can your rabbit make?
Method 2 of 2: Creating a Silent Rabbit
Step 1. Start with a wide sheet of origami paper, patterned on one side
Small sizes work too - just a little more difficult to fold.
Step 2. Fold the paper in half, forming a triangle
Step 3. Unfold the paper and fold both sides in the crease
You now have what looks like the start of a paper airplane. It also looks like an ice cream cone-- the cone will be slightly patterned and the bottom (empty side) will jut out upwards into a triangular shape.
Step 4. Fold the bottom over the patterned side
In other words, do you know what form of ice cream you have? Fold the "ice cream" slightly past the "cone" section. If you are using patterned paper, each section should show you the patterned side.
You should pay attention to the part of the small triangle on top of the larger triangle. Paper, on the whole, is one-third large, a perfect triangle
Step 5. Fold the cover (ice cream) 2/3 back
You have to create a small triangle in the opposite direction; the triangle is at the bottom (unpatterned) of your sheet of paper. This will be your tail.
Step 6. Turn the paper over and grab your scissors
Starting at the thinnest end of your large triangle, cut 1/3 of the way down to the center crease. This will create the head and ears.
Step 7. Fold in half, fold the piece 1/3 up to form a 90 degree angle
Fold the pieces on both sides. There's a head and ears, there's a body in the middle, and the little triangle you made a few steps earlier? That's the tail!
Step 8. Draw the eyes and face
Even just two tiny dots will bring your little friend to life. Now make another bunny so he has friends!
Tips
- If you want to make a frog, simply fold the "back legs" in the opposite direction, and the rabbit ears become the front legs of the frog!
- Flip the 'jump' fold to make a legged frog.
- If you still can't get your bunny to jump, try shortening the fold made in step 12. To fix this, twist the bunny, straighten the fold, and fold it shorter.
- Consider using recycled paper; it's better for the environment.
- The stiffer the paper, the higher your bunny will jump.
- Try folding back and forth to make clear creases.
- Feel free to add some eyes and draw a nose, etc.
- It's perfect for all ages and a lot of fun.
- If you can't get your rabbit to jump, try pressing and holding it so that your rabbit's head is sticking out; then release.
