Yucca plants are easy to care for and adapt well so that their popularity as an ornamental plant in the home is increasing. Pruning yucca is a quick and simple process. Trim unwanted leaves on yucca plants, whether grown indoors or outdoors, or shorten yucca plants grown in pots. While pruning is not mandatory for growing yucca, it will keep the plant healthy all year round.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Pruning Plants to Beautify Their Appearance
Step 1. Cut the leaves at the bottom of the plant with a knife if you want to remove the “skirt” look
The leaves on the underside of the yucca are referred to as the “skirt”. Cut the leaves at the bottom of the plant with a knife, pruning tool, pruning shears, or regular shears. Make sure you cut off the part closest to the stem. Stop cutting when you reach the top half or when you get the look you want.
- You can cut the leaves as you wish. Remember that the best time to prune yucca is in early spring. So, cut the leaves at that time if you want.
- The yucca plant has a "skirt" made of leaves on its underside, much like a palm tree.
- Cutting off damaged leaves is especially useful if the yucca plant is difficult to grow. Removing the leaves will restore the health of the plant.
Step 2. Allow the yucca leaves to grow if you want to maintain a “skirt” look on the plant
Allow the lower leaves to fall naturally instead of trimming them, if you prefer. Leaves on the underside will not damage the plant if left unchecked and you may prefer this look to the appearance of a pruned yucca.
- Pruning to beautify the plant is done based on the taste of each person.
- You can still prune any damaged or dead leaves. The leaves may fall off on their own, but this will keep your plant healthy.
Step 3. Cut the flower stalks about 10 cm from the base
Do this after your yucca plant blooms. When the yucca plant blooms, white flowers will emerge from the top center of the plant. Grasp the flower stalks, remove any obstructing leaves, and then trim the area with shears, a knife, or regular shears.
You can prune them before they bloom, although yuccas are usually pruned after they bloom. Once it blooms, you can prune it right away or wait until the flowers are gone
Step 4. Pick up and discard the trimmed parts when you're done
Remove the leaves or use them to make compost. Yucca plants will look even more beautiful with their new appearance!
Method 2 of 3: Cutting Plants in Pots
Step 1. Prune the yucca that is growing beyond the pot or the yucca that you want to replant in a smaller pot
You can cut the plant in half and replant the two halves. The plant will sprout and grow new leaves on the cut.
- The plant is considered to have grown beyond the pot if the roots are out of the pot.
- You can also move the plant to a larger pot if you don't want to prune it.
- You basically get a new plant when you cut a yucca in half and replant both pieces!
Step 2. Prune the yucca plant in the spring before it begins to thrive
The yucca plant will flower in the spring. It's best to prune the leaves in early spring, just before flowering.
Pruning trees can nourish and control plant growth
Step 3. Remove the tall yucca plant from its container
Choose the plants to be pruned based on their height and size. You can choose one or more plants at once. Grasp the stem of the plant and gently pull it out of the container.
Step 4. Find the center of the plant and trim the leaves that are at the bottom
Look at the plant and mark the midpoint between the stem and the first cluster of leaves. This is the midpoint of the plant. To make it easier for you to cut the stems of the plant, remove or cut the leaves with a sharp knife.
Midpoints can be made based on rough estimates, not precise calculations
Step 5. Cut the stem of the plant at the midpoint with a hand saw or sharp knife
Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut small plants (about 2.5 cm to 17.5 cm in diameter) or use a hand saw to cut large plants (25 cm or more in diameter). Press the tool into the yucca stem consistently and steadily.
The stems of the plant will split in half easily without pressing too hard
Step 6. Dry the two yucca plant cuttings for 1 to 3 hours in the sun before replanting them
You can replant both tree cuttings after pruning, but first place the trimmed trunk in a hot, windy area outdoors. Tree trunks will absorb soil nutrients better if left in the open air for several hours.
Place both plant cuttings on the side of the road, on the grass, or on a table
Method 3 of 3: Replanting Pruned Yucca Plants
Step 1. Buy a pot that can hold the roots of the plant if you replant it in a container
Consider the size of the yucca plant when looking for a pot. You need to make sure the plant is stable and won't topple over.
- Purchase plant containers at a garden supply store.
- The pot should be able to accommodate plant roots easily, as well as provide extra space for the plant to grow.
Step 2. Choose a well-lit area to replant the yucca plant, either indoors or outdoors
Choose an area that is exposed to direct sunlight throughout the day. yucca thrives in full sun. Choose a special place to put your potted plants, such as near a window. You can also provide a special place to place the yucca plant outdoors, such as making it the main decoration in the yard.
- Yucca plants can live in all seasons and climatic zones. The plant is native to dry and warm areas, but there are a variety of yucca species that can survive in urban areas and cold climates.
- Yucca leaves are very sharp. Keep the yucca away from sidewalks and crowded areas so as not to injure others. If you have children or pets, choose a place away from their play area.
- If a yucca plant doesn't get enough sunlight, its leaves will begin to stretch and curl.
Step 3. Make 2 holes that are the same depth and width as the roots of the plant if you are replanting it outdoors
To replant a yucca, take a shovel and make a hole in the yard. The size of the hole will vary based on the size of the plant. Make sure the hole is deep enough to accommodate the plant roots.
Step 4. Fill the hole with gravel and soil until it is 5 to 7.5 cm deep
Yucca plants can be damaged by excess water. So, it is very important to keep the soil irrigated with gravel. Pour the gravel into the container or hole first, then sprinkle a few cubic centimeters of loose soil.
- Purchase gravel and potting soil at a home supply store or garden supply store. Make sure you use potting soil that dries easily. Also consider using a mixture of cactus and palm soil, although it's not mandatory.
- You can use sand as an alternative to help maintain soil drainage.
Step 5. Insert the plant into the hole and fill the container or hole with soil
Press the ground to remove air pockets.
Make sure the plant is standing upright and right in the center of the new pot
Step 6. Lightly water the plant for 10 seconds with a hose or sprinkler
Watering the plant can help the roots stick to the new soil. Yucca plants don't need a lot of water. So, just lightly water the base of the plant for a few seconds.
- Re-water your plants between 10 days and 2 weeks afterward. Touch the soil at the top to determine when the plant needs watering. If the 2.5 cm to 5 cm deep area at ground level appears dry, water the plant again
- Yucca plants will shrink and curl if they don't get enough water. If watered too often, the leaves will die or become discolored.
