Everyone certainly wants to eradicate and ward off ticks at home. Ticks are small insects that live on animals' bodies and consume their blood. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep ticks away from your body and yard. To keep ticks away from your body, wear clothing that covers your entire body and apply a tick-killing spray before traveling. To keep ticks away from your home, take care of your yard and plant tick-killing plants.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Keeping Ticks away from the Body
Step 1. Wear clothes that cover the whole body
If you're going out into the woods or spending time in the yard, wear long pants, long socks, long sleeves, and boots. By wearing clothes like this, ticks will not stick so that the skin will be protected.
During the dry season, you can still wear closed clothes. Wear clothes with cool materials such as cotton or linen
Step 2. Purchase a tick-killing spray
Purchase an exterminator like Basmix or Gun Killer. To get rid of ticks, spray all over your body before going outside.
Step 3. Make a tick repellent spray with essential oils
Pour 1 cup (235 ml) of vinegar into a spray bottle. Add 10-15 drops of a tick-killing essential oil, such as cedar, geranium, or lavender oil. After adding the essential oil, shake the spray bottle. Spray on skin and clothing before traveling.
Alternatively, put a few drops of a tick-repelling essential oil, such as eucalyptus oil, on a lint roller and take it with you when you travel. Every few hours, use the rollers on the clothes to catch and immobilize the attached ticks
Step 4. Check body and clothes after traveling
After spending time outside, carefully examine your body. If you have ticks on your clothes, wash them in hot water and then dry them on a high temperature to kill them. Pay close attention to your arms, ears, hair, belly button, and back of your knees. Generally, ticks attach to these body parts.
Step 5. Take a shower after traveling
Take a shower after 2 hours of being at home to remove any lingering ticks. This can prevent Lyme disease.
Method 2 of 2: Keeping Ticks From Your Home
Step 1. Mow the grass regularly
Generally, ticks live in closed places and overgrown with tall grass. Mow the lawn every 2 or 3 weeks during the dry season. This can keep ticks away from your yard.
Step 2. Stack the firewood neatly and place it in the sun
Ticks can be found in untidy piles of firewood and not exposed to sunlight. To prevent ticks from settling in your house and firewood, stack and arrange firewood neatly. Make sure the firewood is placed in a place exposed to sunlight. Ticks prefer to live in damp and dark places rather than dry and bright places.
Step 3. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the yard
Diatomaceous earth is a natural product containing diatom fossils of small marine organisms. Diatomaceous earth can dry out ticks and other insects. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the yard to kill ticks.
- To keep it effective, you'll need to sprinkle diatomaceous earth back after it rains.
- Don't sprinkle diatomaceous earth on a windy day. This can kill bees and other pollinating insects that live near your home.
Step 4. Plant a tick-killing plant
If there is a garden in your home, plant some plants such as garlic or min. This plant can keep ticks away. Below are some plants that can keep ticks away:
- Rosmarin
- Sage
- Fleabane
- Lemongrass
- lavender
Step 5. Plant plants that can ward off deer
Often, ticks invade human yards while clinging to deer. Plant some plants that deer don't like to keep ticks and deer away. Plant the following plants:
- Thyme
- Fern
- Catmint
- daisies
Step 6. Make a border made of pebbles and pieces of wood
In general, ticks do not like to cross surfaces made of wood and gravel. To keep ticks away, create a barrier made of pieces of wood or gravel between your yard and the forest near your home.
Step 7. Spray the plants using an organic pesticide
Make a natural pesticide spray and then spray it on plants that don't repel ticks.
- Chop 4 cloves of garlic and mix with 1 tbsp (15 ml) mineral oil.
- Strain the garlic and mix the liquid with 1 tsp (5 ml) dish soap and 2 cups (500 ml) water.
- When spraying plants, fill the spray bottle with 2 cups (300 ml) of water and 2 tbsp (30 ml) of the prepared mixture.
Step 8. Contact a pest control service
If you live in an area where ticks are common or want to ask someone else to help you get rid of ticks, contact a pest control service. Pest controllers will spray your yard, outdoors, and trees in your home to control tick populations.
Step 9. Raise the birds
Guinea fowl, farm chickens and ducks will eat ticks that live in their habitat. If you keep these animals in your yard, they can help get rid of ticks in your home.
