Removing smudges from glasses can be difficult, especially if you're worried about damaging them. You may try to clean your glasses with spit or a t-shirt, but this is not recommended as it often doesn't work and can cause permanent damage to the glasses. Common stains such as water stains or other liquid stains can usually be removed using dish soap (though it may be abrasive) or a cleaning solution specifically formulated for glasses. You also need to learn how to prevent the appearance of stains on glasses so that they are kept clean.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Dishwashing Soap
Step 1. Gather the required equipment
For this method, you'll need to use a few household items, including liquid dish soap, water (from the tap), and a dry, clean lint-free cloth. Do not use soap that contains lotion as it can leave traces or stains on the glasses. Keep in mind that some soaps are abrasive and can damage the lens coating on glasses (eg anti-reflective coating).
Step 2. Rinse the glasses under warm running water
Wash your hands first with water and soap so that they are free from dirt and dust that can contaminate the glasses. After that, take the glasses and rinse under warm running water. This rinse helps remove dust and dirt from the lens. That way, you don't have to worry about scratching the lenses when cleaning them with dish soap.
Make sure you use warm water. Hot water can damage the coating on some lenses
Step 3. Pour one drop of dishwashing soap on the lens
You can dispense 1-2 drops of dishwashing soap onto your fingertips first, then carefully spread it over each lens. Try to use small amounts of soap because dish soap is so concentrated that even a small amount can produce a lot of lather.
- Once the soap has been added to the lens surface, use your fingers to apply it to both sides of the lens. Spread the soap for a few seconds. Try removing the smudge on the lens using soap and water.
- You can also clean the nose pad, stem, and pad holder. These parts can be a gathering place for dirt and dust so it's a good idea to clean these parts too.
Step 4. Rinse the glasses to remove any soap residue
After thoroughly cleaning the glasses and removing the stains, rinse the glasses well. Use warm running water to rinse the glasses. Try removing any soap residue from the lenses and all over the glasses, as soap residue can stain the lenses when you try to dry them.
Step 5. Dry the glasses with a clean, dry, non-abrasive cloth
Always dry your glasses thoroughly after you clean them. Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the glasses. Dry the lens in a circular motion and make sure you remove any excess water from the lens as you don't want the remaining water to dry out and leave additional water stains.
- You can use a microfiber cloth to dry the lens. Regardless of the type of cloth you use, make sure you have a dry cloth so you don't scratch the lens surface while drying it.
- If you wash the cloth, do not use fabric softener or a dryer sheet when drying it because when reused, the cloth can leave traces or scratches on the lens.
Method 2 of 3: Using Glasses Cleaning Solution
Step 1. Bali eyeglass cleaning solution
You can remove stains from glasses using a cleaning solution formulated for glasses. Look for a solution product like this at a pharmacy or the internet. Your ophthalmologist can also suggest a quality eyeglass cleaning product that you can try to remove smudges from the lenses.
Read the label on the product packaging to make sure the solution doesn't contain bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or even other harsh cleaners. These materials can damage the protective coating on the lens
Step 2. Apply a small amount of the solution to the glasses
After purchasing the solution to be used, follow the instructions on the product packaging. It's a good idea to rinse the lens with water before using the cleaning solution to remove abrasive dust and debris first, even if the cleaning solution can be used directly on the lens without water.
Gently rub the cleaning solution on the lens in a circular motion with your fingers. Try to remove the stain using the solution
Step 3. Rinse and dry the glasses
After cleaning for a few seconds, rinse the glasses using warm running water. Make sure you remove as much of the cleaning solution as possible, as it can leave streaks and smudges on the lens.
Dry the glasses using a clean, dry cloth. Be careful not to rub the lens too hard so you don't scratch it
Method 3 of 3: Prevent Stains on Glasses
Step 1. Store your glasses in a protective case
You can prevent smudging or damage to your glasses by keeping your glasses in their place. Purchase an eyeglass case from an ophthalmologist's clinic or look for a new case at your nearest optician or optician. Get into the habit of storing glasses in their case when not in use.
Make sure the case has a padding inside and a strong buckle or cover to prevent the glasses from popping out
Step 2. Store the glasses in a place where people rarely pass
You'll also want to store your glasses in places where a lot of people don't pass by (e.g. the kitchen or bathroom). When stored over a bathroom or kitchen sink, eyeglass lenses can be exposed to water and other liquids that can stain.
You also need to keep your glasses away from other things, such as children or pets. Your glasses can be damaged if your child or pets play with or throw them
Step 3. Clean your glasses regularly
Get into the habit of cleaning your glasses using an eyeglass cleaning mixture, either a commercial product or a homemade one, in the morning before you start the day or at night before going to bed. By cleaning your glasses regularly, you can keep them clean and free of dust or debris that could damage the lenses.
- Use soap and water or a cleaning solution to clean the glasses. Do not use spit to clean it because it is not an effective cleanser.
- You also shouldn't wipe dust off your glasses with your clothes on. There may be dust or dirt on your clothes that could scratch the lens.
Tips
Most anti-glare or anti-reflective coatings also contain ingredients that can repel water, oil, and dust so that they can keep your eyeglass lenses clean.
