A well-groomed beard has neat borders with the cheek and neck areas. The border on the cheeks is along the cheekbones, from the bottom of the sideburns to the tip of the mustache. The border on the neck runs from one ear to the other, just below the jawbone and the area that borders the Adam's apple. Sounds simple, but it takes a bit of work! Once you know where to start and where the line is going, you can be sure to trim your beard with ease.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Smoothing the Beard before Trimming
Step 1. Clean the beard with shampoo and conditioner
Smoothing and cleaning your beard will make it easier for you to groom it. Use a mild shampoo, then use a conditioner specially formulated for beards. Rinse thoroughly and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Step 2. Dry the beard before trimming it
Never trim a beard that's still wet! Wet hair looks longer than dry hair. So if you start trimming it while it's still wet, you may end up shaving too short. Allow the beard to dry or use a hairdryer on low heat to dry it.
If you have sensitive skin, don't use a hairdryer. These tools can damage the skin under the beard
Step 3. Purchase a wide-tooth comb and a beard trimmer
To trim and shave your beard properly, you need the right equipment. A fine toothed comb and quality shaver are essential. If you have a quality beard remover, you can use it instead of a shaver.
For daily grooming, you may also need to have barber's scissors
Step 4. Comb the beard
Use a wide-toothed comb to smooth out tangled hair. Comb the beard according to its shape. This will keep your beard in order before you start trimming the outline, and will allow you to get a clean, even finish.
Method 2 of 3: Adjusting the Border of the Beard on the Cheeks
Step 1. Draw a line that starts at the sideburns and ends at the mustache
This line should follow the natural shape of the cheek. The line should be straight, starting from the bottom of the sideburns (point A) to the outer end of the mustache (point B). Determine the clear location of points A and B. Don't just guess.
Step 2. Draw a straight line from one point to another using a white pencil (optional)
If you're worried that the lines aren't as neat as you can imagine, take a white pencil to draw a line on each cheek. You can use a darkening pencil or buy barber pencils online.
Step 3. Shave the hair above one cheek with a razor or hair puller
To create a neat and clean line, do not use a guard on the tool. Shave the hair that is above the cheek line (or make a line first). Shave downwards, in the direction of the beard, from the sideburns (point A) to the bottom of the face (point B).
Step 4. Set the shaving point slightly curved if you want
If you want a very neat and angular look, feel free to curve the transition points on your sideburns and mustache. For a more natural line, curve the part of the beard that intersects with the sideburns, as well as the part of the beard that is at the end of the mustache.
Step 5. Repeat this step on the other side
Practice this method on one cheek first, then use the result as a benchmark when smoothing the other cheek so that it is even. Do not trim both cheeks alternately because it can cause you to shave your beard too short. Make sure both sides are even, but don't expect the result to be absolutely perfect.
Step 6. Shave the lines on the cheeks once every 1-2 days for best results
If you want to keep your beard line neat and sharp, you'll need to do regular maintenance and clean it every day. If your beard is growing very fast, you may need to do this every day.
Method 3 of 3: Shaving the Beard Bordering the Neck
Step 1. Imagine a line running from one ear to the other
Draw an imaginary line that goes from behind one ear (point A) to the top of the neck (just below the jaw), then connects to the back of the other ear (point B).
- The ideal neckline extends from the arch around the ears.
- You can use a white pencil to draw the outline if needed.
Step 2. Find the midpoint at the top of the Adam's apple
Place two fingers on top of your Adam's apple, just below your chin. This method will help you find point C, which is the midpoint between points A and B.
This midpoint is usually about 2.5-4 cm above the Adam's apple, just between the head and neck
Step 3. Place the shaver at point C and start shaving downwards
This is a good point to smooth out the neckline. Place the hair clipper or beard trimmer at point C, just above the Adam's apple, then shave downwards. Continue down to remove all the hair from the neck area below point C.
Step 4. Start at point C outwards
Move the shaver from the newly cleaned center area to the right or left, then brush all the hair under the jaw. Follow the line from point A to B. Don't make the line too curved – the curve should look smooth.
Step 5. Return to the center point and move the shaver to the other side
Once one side is cleaned, return to the midpoint, then repeat the process in the reverse direction to smooth out the line under the other jaw.
Step 6. Make an arch in the border area between the sideburns and the neckline
Imagine there is a straight line on the side of your sideburns. This line should start from the back end of the sideburns (the part closest to the ear), then draw straight up to the jaw line so that it divides the line from one ear to the other in half. Use the shaver to make curves at the meeting points on each side of the face.
If you want to create an angular line or create a “square” look, there is no need to curve at that point
Step 7. Shave your neck every 1-2 days to keep it clean
To keep the neckline in good shape, clean the hair in the area once every two days. If your hair grows fast, this section may need to be shaved daily. For a more natural look, you can shave every three to four days.
