Whether it's a wet spot or a urine odor that makes you suspicious, you may be afraid that you won't be able to get the bedwetting off the couch. Luckily, bedwetting stains and odors can be easily removed from a sofa with just a few simple ingredients that you probably already have at home. For new bed bugs, use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. If the pee has dried or has soaked into the sofa, try a combination of dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. If pets such as dogs or cats are the culprit, or if your sofa is made of microfiber material, enzymatic cleaning products are the best choice. Not only will this product prevent your pet from defecating in the same place again, but it can also evaporate quickly, making it less likely to leave stains on microfiber materials.

Method 1 of 3: Getting Rid of Bedwetting with Vinegar and Baking Soda
Step 1. Blot the stain with a paper towel
Do not wipe the tissue on the stain because it will make it wider on the sofa fabric. Keep patting the tissue on the same spot until the area is dry. Replace with new tissue as needed.
Act immediately! Don't let the bedwetting sit on the sofa for too long, or the stain will be more difficult to clean
Step 2. Clean the stains with a mixture of vinegar and water
Pour 1 part white vinegar and 4 parts water into a spray bottle or basin. Wet a cloth with this solution to remove the bedwetting and odor.
- The vinegar and water solution will neutralize the ammonia contained in the urine, which will eventually eliminate the urine odor. In addition, this solution will also wet the stain again so that it can be thoroughly cleaned from the sofa.
- Do not use this solution on microfiber materials as it will stain. Instead, use an alcohol solution that dries quickly and doesn't leave a water stain.
Step 3. Rub the sponge into the stain area
Use a sponge that you won't use again when you're done. Rub the sponge vigorously from the inside of the stain area outwards to remove all of the weevil from the fibers of the sofa. Thus, no stains or odors remain.
If the smell of bedwetting is very strong, 100% pure vinegar can neutralize it
Step 4. Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of the sofa cloth while it's wet
Use just enough baking soda to cover the entire wet area. 1 cup (about 500 grams) of baking soda should suffice.
You can add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda powder before sprinkling it for a refreshing scent
Step 5. Leave the baking soda on the couch overnight
It's best to leave the baking soda for 12 hours to make sure the layer of cloth underneath is completely dry.
If you are in a hurry, you can wait 4-6 hours before checking to see if the sofa is dry
Step 6. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the baking soda
Point the funnel of the vacuum cleaner over the stain area to suck up the baking soda once the couch is completely dry. The bedwetting stain and the smell should be gone by now!
Method 2 of 3: Cleaning with Dish Soap, Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
Step 1. Blot the rag into the stain area to absorb the wetting
Do not press the cloth firmly because it can make the urine seep deeper into the sofa. Just like any other liquid spill, simply press the rag against a wet surface to absorb the liquid there.
If you have a wet/dry vacuum, you can also use it to clean new bedwetting stains
Step 2. Mix dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide
Pour 2-3 drops of dish soap, 3 tablespoons (about 40 grams) of baking soda, and 1.25 cups (about 300 ml) of hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Put the cap on the bottle then shake to mix all the ingredients.
- The hydrogen peroxide will disinfect the fabric and destroy the acid content in the urine, making the bedwetting stain easier to clean.
- If you don't have hydrogen peroxide, you can substitute vinegar.
Step 3. Spray the solution onto the sofa and leave it for 1 hour
Make sure to wet the entire area of the stain. Do not wipe the solution right away. Let it sit for a while for the solution to work.
If your sofa is made of microfiber cloth, we recommend using only enzymatic cleaning products
Step 4. Rinse off the remaining soap with a damp cloth
Gently pat the damp cloth over the stained area to rinse off any remaining soap. After that, pat the cloth dry and clean. It should take a few hours for the stain area to dry and your sofa to be like new again.
Method 3 of 3: Using Enzymatic Cleaning Products
Step 1. Purchase an enzymatic cleaner formulated for sofa upholstery
Visit a home supply store or pet store and look for enzymatic cleaners in their cleaning products area. Make sure the product is formulated for your sofa type of fabric.
For your own good, buy a high-quality enzymatic cleaner. While they may cost more, these products are likely to be more effective. This means, you don't have to use it over and over again
Step 2. Absorb the rest of the bedwetting with an old cloth
Use a rag that you will throw away or will no longer use for cutlery. Gently pat the rag against the sofa to remove the bed wetting. Do not rub the rag, or the bedwetting will actually seep deeper into the fabric of the sofa.
Step 3. Saturate the stain with an enzymatic cleaner
Spraying the sofa with this cleaner is not enough, you have to wet the stained area completely. Be sure to saturate the entire area of the stain, including any edges or splatter spots.
Step 4. Leave the cleanser on for 15 minutes
Allow this product to soak into fabrics and sofa cushions so that it can break down the uric acid in the urine.
Step 5. Pat the rag to dry the stain
Blot the old but clean rag to absorb the enzymatic cleaner and bedwetting from the sofa as much as possible. Repeat until the rag can no longer absorb the stain.
You may need several wipes if the stain area is large enough
Step 6. Let the sofa fabric dry naturally
No need to rinse the stained area again. When the enzymatic cleaner evaporates, the uric acid that has been split into ammonia and carbon dioxide will also evaporate.
To prevent your pets and family members from occupying wet areas, you can cover them with aluminum foil
Tips
- Try the product you will be using in a hidden area first. If you find discoloration or damage there, try another method.
- If the upholstery of your sofa is antique, you should contact a professional sofa cleaning service to avoid damage.
- Try pouring table salt on a new stain to remove any moisture. Let this salt sit for a few hours before cleaning the sofa with a regular cleaning product.
