Almost everyone has a favorite pair of jeans. Feeling disappointed when you find ink stains on your favorite pants doesn't necessarily mean that you have to rest that charming look for good. The ink stains on your jeans are easy to remove, allowing you to wear your favorite pants the next day. The sooner the stain is removed, the easier it will be to remove it, but even stains that have been around for days can still be treated this way.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Cleaning Stains with Rubbing Alcohol and Hairspray
Step 1. Place a clean, white towel inside the jeans, just behind the stained area
Using a white towel will ensure that no additional ink will transfer to the fabric while the stain is removed. A towel placed inside your jeans will prevent the stain from spreading to other parts of the pants.
Step 2. Pour a small amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol or spray hairspray directly on the stain
For small stains, alcohol can be applied using a cotton swab or cotton ball. Be careful to pour the alcohol slowly and only onto the ink so that the stain doesn't penetrate and spread.
Step 3. Blot the stain with a clean absorbent cloth or cotton ball
Whenever absorbing the stain, use a clean cotton ball or other part of the washcloth as the ink will be absorbed from the jeans with alcohol or hairspray.
Step 4. Rinse the jeans in cold water to remove any alcohol or hairspray once the stain is no longer visible
Be sure to use cold water as hot water can make the remaining stain stick and be much more difficult to remove.
Step 5. Wash the jeans in cold water in the washing machine
Check to make sure the stain is gone before drying your jeans, as the heat from the dryer will make the stain stick. If any stains are still visible, repeat the process of absorbing the stain with rubbing alcohol and then washing the jeans again.
Method 2 of 4: Removing Stains with Commercial Stain Removers
Step 1. Test the stain remover in an inconspicuous place, such as behind the waistband of your pants, to make sure the color of your jeans doesn't fade
Before using any stain remover product on the fabric, it is better to make sure the fabric will not turn white or lose color due to the stain remover. Behind the waist or rolled up cuffs are good places for testing as they are not visible to others.
Step 2. Apply a commercial stain remover product to the stain
Depending on the type of stain to be removed on the jeans, a different stain remover may be more successful. One of these stain removers will help get rid of the stain on your jeans.:
- Rub the stain stick
- Spray stain remover before washing
- Vanish Bleach
Step 3. Give the enzymes in the product time to work on the stain
Read the label directions on the stain remover product and wait the specified amount of time before washing your jeans according to the care instructions on the label.
Method 3 of 4: Removing Ink Stains Using Vinegar
Step 1. Mix the vinegar solution with water in a 1:1 ratio
Make sure to use cold water and not hot water. The heat will make the stain stick, making it more difficult to remove.
Step 2. Soak the stain in the vinegar solution for at least 30 minutes to completely wet the stain
Place the stained part of the jeans in the vinegar solution. The genie will absorb the water and vinegar and will be able to move the liquid onto other surfaces. You may need to place the towel under the vinegar and water solution and under your jeans.
Step 3. Make a paste consisting of baking soda and water
Mix baking soda with water in a 3:1 ratio. The paste will be thick.
Step 4. Rub the paste on the stain using an old toothbrush
Gently apply the paste and rub it over the stain in a circular motion. Let the baking soda paste settle on the stain.
Step 5. Gently scrub the stain with a toothbrush to allow the baking soda to soak into the cloth and remove the ink
Rinse the toothbrush in a clean vinegar solution while cleaning your jeans.
Step 6. Rinse the jeans in cold water and check to make sure the stain is gone
If the stain is still there, try treating the stain with a commercial stain treatment product and washing the jeans in the washing machine.
Method 4 of 4: Washing Jeans After Stain Treatment
Step 1. Remove the ink as much as possible using alcohol, and stain remover, or vinegar
Follow the instructions listed above to remove most of the ink.
Step 2. Wash your jeans separately using detergent and cold water
It's better to wash your jeans separately so that the ink doesn't transfer to other clothes during the wash cycle.
Step 3. Check to make sure the stain is gone before drying the jeans
If ink remains, repeat the stain stick treatment or a commercial spray stain treatment. Dry the jeans only after the ink stain is completely removed.
Tips
- Test the product on hidden areas of the jeans such as the inside of the cuffs to make sure you don't whiten the jeans and cause more stains.
- If the rubbing alcohol method doesn't work at first, try repeating the process by turning the jeans upside down to pull the stain out to the other side of the jeans.
- Do not soak the jeans in hot water, or dry the jeans before trying to remove the stain. The heat will make the stain stick and make it much more difficult to remove.
