Tuna melt is a satisfying hot sandwich that is usually found in restaurants. This bread is inexpensive to make and perfect for lunch. Do you want to make it at home but not sure how to make it? Read on and find out how!
Ingredients
- Canned Tuna
- Mayonnaise (regular or light)
- Bread
- Cheese
- Butter
- Extras (lettuce, tomatoes, etc.)
Step
Part 1 of 2: Mixing Tuna Salad
Step 1. Take out the can of tuna
Remove the contents of the can using a strainer or use a can lid to remove most of the liquid. If you want to reduce the oil, you can wash it under the tap.
Whole white tuna generally makes salad tuna tastier than sliced tuna. The meat is thicker and healthier, so it blends in with the spices more. Use whatever type of tuna you like best
Step 2. Using a fork, mix the tuna with the mayonnaise sauce
In a bowl, chop the tuna mixed with the mayonnaise sauce, making it smaller pieces and mixing with the mayonnaise sauce. This is a basic tuna salad.
-
If you like a smoother tuna salad, you can mix it in a food processor instead of the bowl-and-fork method.
-
If you like a relatively dry tuna salad, you only need to add 1-2 tablespoons of mayonnaise dressing. Be careful not to add too much at the beginning. If you want more mayonnaise, you can add more at any time. Use as much as you like.
-
If you don't like mayonnaise dressing, you can use any type of salad dressing or oil to combine the tuna. Try using Italian salad dressing, or even a little olive oil and vinegar. Chocolate mustard is also a great substitute for mayonnaise for tuna salad.
Step 3. Add spices to taste
To make a basic tuna salad, add 1 or 2 tablespoons pickles, 1 teaspoon chocolate mustard, and a pinch of dried dill. Add salt and pepper as much as you like. Mix everything.
-
Onions and garlic are great additions to a tuna salad. Add a quarter-spoon each of the dried versions for a less intense addition, or chop them into small pieces (half a clove of garlic, one-eighth of an onion) if you prefer the raw version.
-
Add anything to give it the flavor you like. A dash of curry powder and hot sauce makes for an Indian version of a spicy tuna salad, while Parmesan cheese, chopped green olives, onions and dried oregano make a great Mediterranean alternative.
Part 2 of 2: Making Stuffed Bread
Step 1. Choose your bread and cheese
Tuna melt is basically grilled or grilled cheese with the addition of tuna salad, so another important ingredient is any bread and cheese you like. For basic tuna melt, you can use a simple white sandwich and a slice of yellow cheese.
-
Rye and Swiss bread are great alternatives. Parmesan and Crusty Italian bread is a good combination too. Use whatever type of bread and cheese you like for the sandwich.
Step 2. Heat your wok or pan
On medium-low heat, heat a skillet without oil until hot. Meanwhile, lightly coat the bread with butter on both sides. Start by baking the first side of the loaf. If you see this side starting to smoke, lower the temperature slightly and turn the bread over. Make both sides of the two slices of bread crispy.
If you don't want to add calories from butter, another alternative is to toast the bread in the toaster and heat the tuna and cheese in the microwave. Scoop the tuna salad onto a microwave-safe plate and place the cheese on top. Microwave for 10-15 seconds, gradually until the cheese melts
Step 3. When your bread is toasted, lower the temperature
In the pan, arrange your sandwiches. Place the cheese on both buns so that the cheese melts. Carefully spoon the tuna salad over one of the cheeses. Cover the pan to melt the cheese and heat the tuna salad.
Be sure to pay attention to the smoke. If you over-bake the bread, it can burn quickly. Keep the heat low and watch the sandwich carefully. The cheese will melt in no time
Step 4. Remove the sandwich from the pan and stick it
Popular additions to sandwiches are tomatoes, raw onions, green peppers, or lettuce. Add arugula and yellow pepper for a spicy alternative.
