A swimming pool is a great complement to a large backyard, having a pool makes for great family time together and provides a very enjoyable workout! A swimming pool is not the easiest building project. The average cost of building a swimming pool, even if you build it yourself, is around IDR 300 million. Please note that in most cities, you are not allowed to build your own swimming pool as you must have a permit and certificate in order for a swimming pool to be allowed. With this in mind, start with Step 1 to see what you run into in the build process.
Step
Step 1. Design the swimming pool
You can start by designing the swimming pool you want to build. Is the shape round? Squares? How deep? What color do you want? The more complex the design, the higher the cost.
Step 2. Get a build permit
Contact the contractor and apply for a permit to the Local Government. You also have to ask for permission from the RT (Rukun Tetangga), because not all RTs allow swimming pools in their environment. Your contractor may be able to apply for the permit for you, if they have experience and quality service.
Please note that in some areas, swimming pools are subject to additional taxes and you can get in trouble if you don't register your swimming pool. This can be considered tax evasion
Step 3. Do the digging
Rent the necessary construction equipment (usually at least one backhoe-tractor) and dig up the area where the pool will be. It's important to already have a permit from the local government at this stage, because of course you don't want to run the risk of destroying the city's infrastructure pipeline that you don't know about.
Step 4. Level the ground
You should level the soil at the bottom of the pond as evenly as possible. Because this is important so that the construction of walls and floors is easier. There are many ways to level the ground, but if you want a floor that goes down in depth, you'll need someone with experience doing it.
Step 5. Install the wall concrete frame
Once the soil is excavated and leveled, you are ready to install the siding. Starting with installing a wooden and iron frame. Make sure the walls are flat and meet on each side.
Step 6. Install the tubing
Call a licensed plumber to come and install the necessary piping for the pool. You just need to set up a supply and filtering system that complies with your local regulations. Only experienced plumbers working on swimming pools you can hire because inexperienced ones will mess up your pool.
Step 7. Run the power
Hire an electrician to install the necessary electrical installations for a lighting or filtering system. For this, of course, you also need to hire a professional, you can imagine what can happen if a bad electrical installation meets water.
Step 8. Pour the floor concrete
Once the plumbing and electrical systems are in place, you can start building the walls and floors. Rent a cement mixer car and pour concrete on the floor, level and smooth after pouring. Make sure you pay attention to the angle of the floor when building a pond with varying depths.
Step 9. Build the pool walls
Once the floor is finished you can start building the walls. Pool walls are usually made of brick or concrete. You can discuss the advantages of using each of these materials with your contractor. Make sure the top of the wall being built is level and the level of the surrounding ground is sufficient.
Step 10. Cover the walls
Swimming pools need a moisture barrier, to keep water from seeping out. There are many different options, discuss with a contractor what is right for you. Commonly used options include:
- Basic plastic tube
- ceramic
- Cement coating
- Spray plastic coating
Step 11. Fill in the outside
Fill the area outside behind the pool wall. The filling material varies depending on where you live. Your contractor can suggest the safest vs cheapest option.
Step 12. Fill the pool
When the pool is finished, all you have to do is fill it up! Depending on how the piping system is, you can fill your swimming pool with water from your own home water system or you can get a water supply company to fill your pool. Enjoy!

- Keep your swimming pool clean.
- Call a swimming coach if you or your children cannot swim.
- Don't forget to empty the pool before winter if you don't want your pool to become an ice skating rink.
- Remove all leaves and twigs that fall into your pool every day.
