Imagine that you are in a situation that requires you to perform Wudu but cannot find any water. Or you are sick and cannot touch the water with your bare hands. In this case, you can do tayammum, a substitute for ablution, which does not require the use of water. Tayamum is a way of purification before worship if there is no water to perform ablution.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Recognizing the Need for Tayammum
Step 1. Practice cleanliness
Muslims are required to wash their bodies with water before praying and performing prayers, or touching and reading the Koran.
Purification of the body and clothes before prayer is called taharah
Step 2. Find water
Usually water is needed to purify the body before praying. This purification ritual is called wudu, which requires you to clean your hands, forearms, face, head, and feet.
- There is a more thorough purification called ghusl which is required after "unholy" conditions (such as sexual intercourse, menstruation, and the birth of children). Ghusl requires a full body bath.
- Wudu will be invalidated after the natural discharge of feces (urine, fart, feces, ejaculation), after falling asleep, or after becoming unconscious. If any of these things happen, you will have to perform ablution again before offering your prayers.
Step 3. Know when tayamum is allowed
Tayammum is allowed in the following cases:
- If legal water is not available within a radius of 1.5 km.
- If there is a legitimate fear that an enemy or dangerous animal is near the water.
- If you use water for ablution you run the risk of not having enough drinking water to drink later.
- If there is no means to get water from the well (no rope or bucket to draw water).
- If using water will be harmful to your health.
- If you do not have enough money to buy water on sale.
- If water is sold at an unreasonable price.
- If there is no trace of water and there is no one to ask about the location to get water.
Step 4. Determine if you have enough legal water
If you cannot find enough water to perform wudu, or if using the water you have will endanger your health or that of your dependents, it is best to perform tayamum instead of wudu.
- The types of water that are allowed include fresh water from ponds or wells, melted snow, well water, or river/sea/fresh water.
- Types of water that are prohibited include najis water, water whose color has changed, water that has fallen something unclean, distilled water from fruit and trees, water left over from animal drinks, or water previously used for ablution or ghusl.
Step 5. Do tayammum if you don't have water
If you are in a condition that requires purification before praying, but there is no legal water to use, you can perform tayamum with clean soil/dust.
-
Items accepted for performing tayammum include:
- Land
- Sand
- Stone
- Limestone
- Clay vessel
- Walls made of mud, stone, or brick
- Clay
- Another object with a thick layer of dust
- The first option is new soil, but if you don't have one, you can choose clay, a lump of sand, or even rock if necessary.
-
Items that are not legal for performing tayammum include:
- Wood
- Metal
- Glass
- Food
- Anything that burns to ashes or melts
Part 2 of 3: Preparing for Tayamum
Step 1. Find a clean place
This location could be something natural like rock, sand, or grass. This location must be clean to maintain the purity of worship.
- If the location of tayamum is not holy, you must purify it with water.
- If there is no water to purify the area, you can use one of the items allowed for tayammum (listed above).
Step 2. Eliminate unnecessary objects
To perform tayamum, you have to clean your body and clothes completely (called taharah). This means that you have to remove any unnecessary obstructions such as rings or nail polish.
Step 3. Determine if you need to wash your feet
If you wear socks or shoes while you still have your wudu, you don't need to take them off and wash your feet every time you have to renew your wudu. You can keep your shoes/socks on and simply clean the top of each covered foot once with wet hands instead of washing the entire foot.
- If you don't have water to wet your hands, you can use one of the items allowed for tayammum (listed above) to wipe the tops of each of your feet that are covered.
- You can do this for up to 24 hours. However, if you are traveling, this method will be valid for three days.
Step 4. Memorize the sequence
All parts of tayamum must be done in the correct order. You need to know the order of the steps in order to follow them accurately.
If you make a mistake in the sequence, you will have to start tayammum all over again
Part 3 of 3: Performing Tayammum
Step 1. Read the following passages:
Bismillah hirrahmaan nirrahiim "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"
This sentence is the first verse of the first surah in the Qur'an. This fact emphasizes the importance of starting tayamum in the name of Allah
Step 2. State the intention
State your intention to perform tayammum. Do this by saying "I intend to do tayamum in place of wudu, for Allah and to draw near to Him".
- You need to state your intention to perform tayamum so that the whole sacred ritual is preserved and respected.
- You don't have to verbalize your intentions; this was never done by the Prophet. You just need to say the intention in your heart.
Step 3. Place your hands on the ground
This is the stage that requires clean soil. Place your palms together on the ground (or clay, sand, or rock, according to choice and availability).
You don't need to completely cover your hand with the ground-just touch it with your palm
Step 4. Wash your face with your hands
The face covers the right ear to the left ear. Place your palms on your forehead at the hairline and lower your hands down to the tip of your nose. Use only the palm of your hand during this process.
Step 5. Wash each hand
Move the palm of your left hand so that it washes the entire back of the right hand from the wrist bone to the fingertips. Then repeat this step with the right palm on the left hand.
Step 6. Repeat the process of placing your hands on the ground
Again, press your hands together into the ground so that they come into contact with clean soil.
Step 7. Repeat the process of washing your face with your hands
Wash each hand again (starting from the left and moving to the right) to end the tayamum.
