This wikiHow teaches you how to increase file download speed in uTorrent. Since the seed is the person or location that is uploading the file you're downloading, it's impossible to actually increase the seed without asking people to seed or waiting for more seeds to appear. However, you can increase the download speed in several ways.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Common Fixes
Step 1. Close background running programs and streaming services
While it won't affect your download seed at all, it will increase the amount of bandwidth (internet allocation) you can use for downloading. Things that need to be closed include:
- Streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
- Active downloads elsewhere (phone/tablet/console upgrades, etc.)
- Unnecessary programs on your computer (background apps like Skype or Slack, additional browsers, etc.)
Step 2. Look for downloads with more seeds
If you prefer downloading files based on number of seeds over quality, location, or size, you may be able to download a similar version of the same file with more seeds than the version you originally thought.
- For example, you might find a 720p (HD) version of a video that has far more seed than the 1080p (full HD) version.
- Ideally, you'll find files with more seeders (uploaders) than leechers (downloaders).
Step 3. Disable files that you don't need to download
When you start downloading a torrent file in uTorrent, you are usually presented with a window that lists all the files available in the torrent. You can uncheck the box next to the files you don't want to download to speed up the download process.
You'll often find that the less popular files (for example, tutorials or uninstallers) included in torrents have significantly fewer individual seeds. A small number of seeds can cause the file to crash during download. So, unchecking these files will speed up the download
Step 4. Limit yourself to one download at a time
Instead of downloading multiple files at once (for example, several movies and programs), download one at a time to make sure you're taking full advantage of your internet connection.
Step 5. Avoid popular downloads
Unfortunately, you may have to wait for popular files to download until a few days after they are released on the torrent site of your choice. This is because so many people will download it that you may have a hard time getting to the file at first. However, once those people have finished downloading, you can download by using them as a seed.
Method 2 of 3: Adding Tracker
Step 1. Find the latest tracker list
Type utorrent trackers [month] [year] into the search engine of your choice and press Enter. Make sure to replace "[month]" with the current month and "[year]" with the current year (for example, utorrent trackers October 2017).
Step 2. Open site tracker
Once you find a site that has a tracker for the month and year listed, click the link to open it.
- Make sure the tracker site is safe before you open it. In particular, the site must use HTTPS encryption (it must contain "https:" before "www" in the address).
- You can usually find the tracker on the site where you downloaded the torrent file itself. Look for tabs or sections Trackers on the home page.
Step 3. Copy the tracker list
Click and drag your mouse on the tracker list to select it, then press Ctrl+C (Windows) or Command+C (Mac) to copy it.
Tracker resembles a web address
Step 4. Open uTorrent
Click the green and white uTorrent logo.
Step 5. Not torrent Properties
Double-click the torrent whose seed you want to add.
Step 6. Click the General tab
It's in the upper-left corner of the Properties window.
Step 7. Click the "Trackers" window
You'll see it in the middle of the Properties window. This will place your cursor inside the window.
Step 8. Paste your tracker list
Move the cursor to the bottom of the current tracker list, press Enter to create a space between your cursor and the last tracker, and press Ctrl+V (Windows) or Command+V (Mac).
Make sure there is a blank line between each tracker line
Step 9. Click OK
It's at the bottom of the window. This will increase the number of trackers for your torrent, which in turn will generate more seeds within minutes of being added.
Method 3 of 3: Improving Connection
Step 1. Open uTorrent
Click the green and white uTorrent logo.
Step 2. Click Options (Windows) or uTorrent (Mac).
It's in the upper-left corner of the uTorrent window (Windows) or Mac screen (Mac). A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 3. Click Preferences
You'll find it near the top of the drop-down menu. Click the button to open the Preferences window in uTorrent.
Step 4. Click the Bandwidth tab
It's to the left of the window (Windows) or at the top of the window (Mac).
Step 5. Type 14 into the "Maximum upload rate" text field
This text field is at the top of the page.
Step 6. Type 2329 into the "Global maximum number of connections" box
You'll find this box near the bottom of the window.
Step 7. Type 257 in the "Maximum number of connected peers per torrent" box
It's under the "Global maximum number of connections" box.
Step 8. Type 14 in the "Number of upload slots per torrent" box
It's at the bottom of the page.
Step 9. Click Apply
It's in the lower right corner of the window. This step will activate the changes you made to uTorrent.
Step 10. Click OK
This will save your changes and close the Preferences window.
