This wikiHow teaches you how to connect your computer, tablet, or phone to your home wireless network. Before you do that, first buy and install a wireless router. You must also subscribe to internet service at one of the internet service providers in your area.
Step
Part 1 of 5: Getting Ready
Step 1. Contact your internet service provider to subscribe
Usually you have to pay a subscription fee on a monthly basis. A good internet service provider will vary depending on where you live. So, look for information to choose the best service.
People usually choose internet providers based on the quality of their services
Step 2. Select a wireless router and modem
Which modem and router to choose depends on several things, such as the internet service provider you use and the size of your home.
For example, you should choose a router that matches the highest speed provided by your service provider to get the most out of the internet package you buy
Step 3. Write down the SSID and password of the router
The SSID is the name of the router's Wi-Fi network, while the password (or "security key") is the text used to log into the network. This information is usually printed on the bottom or back of the router.
The SSID and password are usually listed in the router's manual or box
Step 4. Connect the modem to the cable outlet
Do this using the coaxial cable that came with the modem. Cable outlets are usually placed in the living room or bedroom.
Step 5. Connect the router to the modem
Plug the Ethernet cable into the square port on the back of the modem, then plug the other end into the square port on the back of the router.
The router port is usually labeled "Wi-Fi" or something similar
Step 6. Connect the router and modem to a power source
Connect the other end of the power cord to the modem and router inputs, then plug the power cord into a wall outlet or surge protector (a device to protect the network from lightning strikes and power surges). The modem and router will turn on automatically.
Step 7. Make sure the router and modem are really turned on
When turned on, the router and modem lights will usually flash. When the router and modem lights are fully on, continue the process by setting up a Wi-Fi connection on your computer, tablet, or phone.
You can look at your router and modem's manual to make sure all the lights are on correctly
