The face produces natural oils that protect the skin. However, what if your face produces too much oil and you want to stop it? Oily skin can cause breakouts and make you "self-conscious" about your appearance. But fortunately, there are some simple ways to care for your skin that you can follow to stop oily skin.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Cleanse Face
Step 1. Use a mild soap or cleanser
Wash your face with a mild soap to prevent skin irritation. Using a cleansing product that is too strong actually encourages the face to produce more oil to cover the "lack" or loss of natural oils that are lifted.
If soap or mild cleaning products don't work, try using a product that contains benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid
Step 2. Don't rub your face too hard
Scrubbing your face with a washcloth or textured sponge can cause skin irritation. Scrubbing the face itself encourages the skin to produce more oil to cover the lack of oil that is lifted. If you want to use a washcloth to clean your face, scrub your face gently and carefully.
Step 3. Clean your face in the morning and evening
It is important for you to clean your face twice a day so that the oil on your skin can be controlled. Wash your face after waking up and before going to bed.
Step 4. Wash your face with warm water, not hot water
Hot water can irritate the skin and remove natural oils so that the skin will produce more oil to cover the deficiency.
Step 5. Use a pore tightening (toner) only on oily areas of the skin
If you use a pore tightener all over your face, your skin will become dry, causing it to become cracked and red. Apply the pore tightener to the oily areas of the skin and leave the normal or dry areas of the skin on.
Step 6. Use cushioning products or astringent wipes for travel
Astringent products are useful for removing excess oil when you can't wash your face. Carry a few packs in your purse or keep them at work if you tend to have oily skin after a long day of activity.
Step 7. Use a mud mask only on certain occasions
Mud masks can dry out your skin and remove most of the oil from your face, so it's best not to use them too often. Do a mud mask treatment for special occasions that require the skin to be free from oil for a long period of time.
Method 2 of 5: Moisturizing Face
Step 1. Avoid moisturizing products that contain oils such as petroleum or shea butter
These two ingredients add extra oil to the skin and make oily skin conditions worse. Read the ingredients listed on the product packaging before you buy it.
Step 2. Choose a product that contains dimethicone
Look for a moisturizer that is labeled “oil-free” and contains dimethicone (not petroleum). Moisturizers containing dimethicone can give a matte effect, while moisturizers containing petroleum make skin look even more oily.
Step 3. Choose a moisturizer that doesn't cause blackheads or pimples
Regardless of the product you choose, make sure there is a non-comedogenic or anti-acne label on the product packaging. Moisturizers labeled non-comedogenic or anti-acne contain ingredients that are unlikely to cause breakouts.
Step 4. Use moisturizer as needed
Apply a little moisturizer first, then add product if needed. Dispense a pea-sized amount of moisturizer on your fingers and add more product if your skin still looks dry after using the product.
Step 5. Try different moisturizers until you find the one that suits you best
Just because a certain product is suitable for use by other people with the same oily skin, doesn't mean it will have the same effect on your skin.
If a friend recommends a project or you read reviews about a particular product, try getting a sample of the product before buying it. Cosmetology outlets in supermarkets will usually provide product samples if you ask for it (friendly of course)
Method 3 of 5: Using Makeup
Step 1. Use a matte primer
After cleansing and moisturizing your skin, apply a shine-free primer on your face before you apply foundation. A shine-free primer helps absorb excess oil throughout the day.
Step 2. Choose oil-free makeup products that don't cause blackheads
Look for foundations, powders, blushes, and bronzers that are labeled oil-free and non-comedogenic. These products will not cause oily skin and will not clog pores.
Step 3. Use a mineral based powder
Apply mineral-based powder (just a thin layer) on the face using a large powder brush. Mineral based powder products prevent skin from looking crusty. Carry powder with you at all times to re-fix your make-up throughout the day.
Step 4. Use makeup products as needed
Use a little product to reduce the amount of makeup that sticks to the face. A thinner layer of makeup allows the skin to "breathe" and prevents excess oil throughout the day.
Method 4 of 5: Adopt Habits That Prevent Oily Skin
Step 1. Avoid foods that encourage oil production in the body
Foods that are high in oil, sugar, and salt encourage oily skin. In addition, dairy and flour products also encourage oily skin. Avoid these foods or at least limit their consumption to help stop oily skin.
Step 2. Consume the type of food that can control the oil
Fiber-rich foods like nuts, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can stop oily skin. Fruits and vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables and citrus are effective in treating oily skin. Prepare or serve vegetables without adding oil by steaming or boiling them.
Step 3. Drink plenty of water
Keep in mind that water helps keep the skin moist and remove toxins from the body. It is important that you drink enough water every day so that the oil on your skin can be controlled.
Step 4. Control stress
Keep in mind that stress encourages the body to produce cortisol which in turn triggers more oil production. To control stress and excess oil, incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises into your daily routine.
Method 5 of 5: Getting Treatment from a Dermatologist
Step 1. Talk to a dermatologist
If you're still having problems with oily skin, a dermatologist can help prescribe medications or prescription skin care products to regulate oil production on your face.
Step 2. Ask about topical retinoid treatments
A dermatologist can prescribe a topical retinoid cream to stop oily skin. Creams like this can reduce oil and get rid of acne. However, this treatment has been shown to be effective in 20-30% of patients only.
Step 3. Discuss hormonal treatments
Women can experience oily skin due to hormonal fluctuations. Sometimes, taking contraceptive pills can stop excess oil production and eradicate acne on the skin.
Step 4. Discuss the chemical peeling procedure
An AHA/glycolic acid peeling scrub or cream is a fine scrub product that helps remove excess oil from the skin. The results of this treatment are temporary, but a dermatologist can combine this treatment with other treatments to maximize the results you can get.
Step 5. Ask about the Accutane/Roaccutane treatment
Accutane is a prescription medication that is very effective in controlling oil on the skin and eradicating acne. This drug is derived from vitamin A. Patients are usually asked to take this product daily for 15-20 weeks. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take Accutane because this drug can cause birth defects.
Tips
- Keep blotting paper in your purse to remove excess oil throughout the day.
- Avoid over-the-counter drug products and products that are said to be oil-fighting because they usually contain chemicals that can damage/harm the skin. Look for products that contain salicylic acid in a concentration of about 2% (no more than 10%). This acid can provide benefits. Try using a product like Garnier Pure Active Fruit Energy Daily Energizing Gel Wash (containing grapefruit, pomegranate, and vitamin C) which benefits oily skin.
- Use a moisturizing product with an oil-free label on the bottle or tube.
- Change your grooming routine according to the season or the weather. Your skin may become oilier in hot seasons/weather than in cold seasons/weather. Therefore, make sure you check the condition of your skin again when the season or weather changes to find out the right adjustments to your daily skin care.
- Look for products that combine moisturizer, sunscreen, and foundation so you don't have to apply multiple layers of makeup to your skin.
