This wikiHow teaches you how to access internet sites that are blocked by the OpenDNS security system. The easiest thing to do is to use an online proxy service. However, if your computer is blocking all proxy sites, you can use the portable version of the Tor browser to bypass the OpenDNS security system.

Method 1 of 3: Using Common Fixes
Step 1. Know what you can't do
Many internet security blockchain systems can be tricked by using a website's mobile address, or a website's IP address instead of a generic address. However, the OpenDNS security system can disable this tactic so you will need to try some other ways to get around it.
Step 2. Connect the device directly to the modem
If you can connect your computer to your internet modem via ethernet, you can bypass the network restrictions imposed by OpenDNS. Please note that attempting this step on a work or school computer is a form of unauthorized internet access and may be considered a serious offence.
- The modem is usually separate from the router. If your internet connection uses a combined router/modem device, this method may not work for you.
- This method is more effective to follow for home internet connections that are equipped with parental control features from OpenDNS.
Step 3. Use a mobile data connection
If you have a supported iPhone or Android smartphone, you can use your phone's cellular data connection as a WiFi network. This process is known as “tethering”, but not all cellular service providers support this process.
- The linked article discusses using tethering on laptops. However, the same instructions can also be followed for desktop computers.
- If the computer you want to use to bypass the OpenDNS security system doesn't allow you to choose your own network, you can't use it for tethering.
Step 4. Use a VPN
Virtual private network or virtual private network (VPN) serves to direct internet traffic to different servers around the world. This process can hide network activity from security systems like OpenDNS and the like. However, most VPN services are paid subscriptions and if they have limitations, you may not be able to make administrator-level changes to your computer.

One of the free VPN options is Hotspot Shield. If you can install Hotspot on a computer that has restrictions, you can access blocked sites.
You can save the Hotspot Shield installation file on a USB flash disk and attach it to your computer via that disk
Method 2 of 3: Using an Online Proxy
Step 1. Open the desired proxy service
Visit one of the following proxy sites:
- Hide. Me -
- ProxySite -
- ProxFree -
- Whoer -
- Hidester -
- You may need to try several proxy sites before finding a proxy that is not blocked by OpenDNS.
- If you don't have any site options available, try searching for a proxy by typing the keyword best online proxy 2018 (or something similar) into a search engine.
Step 2. Click the proxy site search bar
This text field is usually displayed in the center of the page. You may find it at the bottom of the page if you use ProxFree.

Step 3. Enter the address of the blocked site
Type in the address of the blocked site (eg www.facebook.com) you want to access.
Step 4. Click the Go button
The appearance of this button will differ depending on the selected proxy service (for example, you need to click “ Browse anonymously ). However, usually the button appears below or to the right of the text field.
- If you are using the ProxFree proxy service, click the “ PROXFREE ” which is blue.
- You can also press Enter key.
Step 5. Browse the site as usual
The site will load normally, just like when you browse through a computer that has no restrictions. However, loading may take longer due to proxy server location changes.
Method 3 of 3: Using a Portable Browser
Step 1. Make sure you have met the required prerequisites
To use the Tor browser on a computer that has restrictions, you will need to install the browser on a USB flash drive that can be connected to the computer. In addition, there are several other conditions that must be met:
- Restricted computers must have at least one USB port.
- Your computer should allow you to open files from a USB flash drive.
- Portable browsers should be installed on a flash drive, not just stored on a disk.
Step 2. Connect the flash drive to the computer
The disc must be plugged into one of the computer's USB ports.
You may need to use a home computer for this process
Step 3. Go to the Tor download page
Visit https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en in a browser. From this site, you can download Tor, a browser that has a built-in proxy.
Contrary to popular belief, Tor is harmless to download and use as long as you don't do anything illegal (like a normal browser)
Step 4. Click DOWNLOAD
It's a purple button in the middle of the page. After that, the Tor installation file will be downloaded to your computer.
If you are prompted to select a download location, click the name of the USB flash drive and skip the next step
Step 5. Move the Tor installation file to a USB flash drive
Visit the folder where the Tor installation file is stored, then follow these steps:
- Click the file to select it.
- Press the Ctrl+X (Windows) or Command+X (Mac) key combination to copy the file and delete it from the source location.
- Click the name of the USB flash drive on the left side of the file browsing window.
- Click an empty column in the disc window.
- Press the Ctrl+V (Windows) or Command+V (Mac) key combination to paste the file onto the disc.
Step 6. Install Tor on the flash drive
Select the USB flash disk as the Tor installation location. To install a browser:
- Windows – Double click Tor EXE file, select language and click “ OK ", click " Browse… ”, select the name of the USB flash drive and click “ OK " Click " Install ”, uncheck both boxes, and click “ Finish ' when prompted.
- Mac – Double-click the Tor DMG file, verify the download if necessary, and follow any additional on-screen instructions.
Step 7. Remove the flash drive
Once Tor is installed, you can remove the flash drive from your computer. Now, Tor is installed on the disk and you can run it on any computer with restrictions, without any problems.
Step 8. Connect the flash drive to the restricted computer
This computer is a computer with the OpenDNS security system that restricts you from accessing certain sites.
Step 9. Open Tor
Visit the flash drive folder, double-click the "Tor Browser" folder, and double-click the green and purple "Start Tor Browser" icon. Now, you should see the Tor launcher window.

Use the text field in the middle of the Tor startup page to visit the site. Since Tor runs with a built-in proxy, you can visit any site.
Keep in mind that site loading takes longer because browser traffic is routed to a different server
Tips
There are thousands of reliable free proxy services so the chances of OpenDNS blocking them are pretty slim. Keep looking for the right proxy service if the first few options don't work
Warning
- The OpenDNS service is much more comprehensive in the blocking process compared to the general internet blocking service. Frequently used methods such as using a mobile version of a website or switching to a different DNS address are often not enough to access blocked sites.
- Be careful when entering personal or sensitive information if you use a proxy. Since the proxy host can see the information entered, you may want to refrain from entering information such as social security card numbers and email login information.
