This wikiHow teaches you how to start your computer in both normal mode and safe mode used for diagnostic purposes. When the computer is in safe mode, only the default programs will be loaded, and the display quality will decrease.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Starting the Computer in Normal Mode
Step 1. Make sure the computer is connected to a power source
If you're using a desktop computer, you can't turn it on without first plugging it in. Meanwhile, even though the laptop can work on battery power, it is still recommended that you connect it to an electrical outlet to avoid low battery or other problems when turning it on.
- If you connect your laptop to a surge protector, such as a power strip, you should still make sure that the shield is turned on.
- The laptop charger connector is generally located on the left or right side of the laptop.
Step 2. Find the computer power button
circular with vertical lines.
The position of the power button varies, but you can generally find the power button in one of the following locations:
- Laptops - The left, right, or front of the body. Sometimes, these keys are also near the top of the keyboard, or they may be buttons below or above the keyboard.
- Desktop - The front or back of the CPU (the box that connects to the computer monitor). Some iMac desktops have the power button on the back of the monitor, or on the keyboard.
Step 3. Press the computer power button
You don't have to hold down the power button to turn on the computer. After pressing the button, you will hear the fan sound and the drive starts to spin. Then, your monitor will also turn on, and display a home screen or a login screen, depending on the state of the computer when it was turned on (in the off state or in Sleep mode).
- If you are using a laptop, first open the screen by pulling it up.
