A WPS file is a word processing document created in Microsoft Works. This document can be opened using Microsoft Word on a Windows computer, a third-party WPS viewer program on Mac OS X, or an online file converter or file viewer website.

Method 1 of 3: Opening WPS Files on Windows Computer
Step 1. Double-click the WPS file that you want to open
Windows will automatically open the file using Microsoft Word or a compatible review program on your computer.
If the file fails to open, move on to the next steps to open the file using the Works Converter in Word
Step 2. Close Microsoft Word and open an internet browser

Step 4. Click “Download” and select “Save file”
Step 5. Double-click the Windows Works File Converter installation file on the desktop
A tutorial window or program installation procedure window will open.
Step 6. Click “I accept the terms of the License Agreement” and follow the on-screen instructions to install Microsoft Works File Converter on your computer
Step 7. Run Microsoft Word
Step 8. Click the “Microsoft Office” button at the top left corner of the window and select “Open”
If you are using Microsoft Word 2000, 2002, or 2003, click the “File” menu and select “Open”
Step 9. Select “All Files” from the “Files of type” drop-down menu
Step 10. Locate and select the WPS file you want to open, then click “Open”
The document will open in Microsoft Word afterwards.
If the document fails to open, it is possible that the file was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Works
Method 2 of 3: Opening WPS Files on Mac OS X
Step 1. Double-click the WPS file that you want to open
Mac OS X will automatically open the file using a compatible review program installed on your computer.
If the file fails to open, continue to the next steps to open the file using a third-party WPS review program
Step 2. Open the “Applications” folder and select “App Store”
The App Store window from Apple will open after that.
Step 3. Type “file viewer” into the search field at the top right corner of the App Store window

Step 4. Click the desired application, then select “Install app”
Step 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the WPS viewer application on the computer
Step 6. Run the application after the installation is complete, then select the option to open the WPS file

Step 1. Launch an internet browser and open your favorite search engine
Step 2. Look for a website that offers an online file reviewer or file converter
You can use search keywords like “wps file converter” and “wps file viewer”.
Step 3. Open the file reviewer website you want
Some websites that offer online WPS file review or file conversion services are Zamzar, Online-Convert, FileMinx, and CloudConvert.
Step 4. Follow the instructions displayed on the website to open the WPS file
Usually, you'll be asked to select a file on your computer, as well as the final format for converting the file (eg DOC or PDF).
