- 350 ml of water
- 225 grams of jasmine rice
- 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
For: 4 servings
Using Rice Cooker
- 240 ml water
- 225 grams of jasmine rice
- 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
For: 12 servings
Using the Microwave
- 225 grams of jasmine rice
- 475 ml water
- 1/8 tsp. salt (optional)
For: 4 servings
Step
Method 1 of 3: Cooking Rice on the Stove
Step 1. Wash 225 grams of jasmine rice with cold water until clean
You can do this process 2 to 3 times in a saucepan or using a special strainer. Remember, the rice must be washed thoroughly to remove the flour that will stick to the surface! Thus, cooked rice can have a fluffier and less sticky texture.
The rice should be washed until the water is clear, about 2 to 3 times or more, if necessary
Step 2. Put the rice and water in a medium thick saucepan
In general, you need to use 350 ml of water for every 225 grams of jasmine rice. Make sure the pot you use is thick and has a lid that doesn't come loose.
- To enrich the taste of rice, add 1/2 tsp. salt.
- If you want to increase or decrease the amount of rice, also adjust the amount of water. In general, the ratio of the ratio of rice and water cooked using a stove is 1: 1.5.
- Choose a pot that is 4 times larger than the amount of rice you are cooking. Later, the size of the rice will expand to 3 times, so you need a large enough pot to cook it.
Step 3. Bring rice and water to a boil over medium heat
If you have limited time, use high heat but make sure the water doesn't boil to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
Make sure the whole rice is submerged in water. If there's still rice that isn't submerged, try pushing it into the water with a spoon
Step 4. Cover the pot and cook the rice over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes
Make sure the size of the lid matches the diameter of the pot! If the pan you are using doesn't have a special lid, try covering the surface with aluminum foil or a large heat-resistant dish.
Remember, the pot must be covered to trap the hot steam in it
Step 5. Let the rice sit in the pot for 5 minutes covered
Transfer the pot to a counter or another stove, and let it rest for 5 minutes without opening the lid.
At this stage, the hot steam trapped in the pot will cook the rice
Step 6. Stir the rice with a fork before serving for a fluffier texture
Supposedly, the rice stuck to the bottom of the pan will have a dry texture. So, what if the texture of the rice doesn't match your expectations even though you've followed all the instructions properly? If that's the case, apply the following tips to fix it:
- If the texture of the rice is too dry or hard, add a little water, cover the pot and continue cooking for another 5 to 10 minutes on low heat.
- If the texture of the rice is too wet, cover the pot and continue cooking for another 5 to 7 minutes on low heat.
Method 2 of 3: Cooking Rice in a Rice Cooker
Step 1. Wash 225 grams of jasmine rice with cold water until clean
You can do this process directly in the rice cooker or use a filter in the sink. Keep washing the rice until the water is clear, about 2 to 3 times.
This process must be carried out to remove excess flour adhering to the surface of the rice and make the rice fluffier and less sticky when cooked
Step 2. Put the rice in the rice cooker and add 240 ml of water
It is recommended that you read the manual provided in the rice cooker package to ensure the ratio of the water to rice ratio, as well as the correct cooking time.
- To enrich the taste of rice, add 1/2 tsp. salt.
- After washing, rice can be cooked directly without having to be dried first.
- If you want to increase or decrease the amount of rice, also adjust the amount of water used. Generally, the ratio of the amount of rice and water cooked using a rice cooker is 1:1.
Step 3. Turn on the rice cooker, then cook the rice until the rice cooker light turns off
Again, the specific process really depends on your rice cooker manual. Generally, you just need to place the rice cooker on a table or heat-resistant surface, plug it into a power outlet, and turn it on. Most rice cookers will also turn off on their own when the rice is cooked.
However, there are also rice cookers that work differently. Therefore, observe the rice cooker settings and choose the option that best suits your needs
Step 4. Once cooked, let the rice sit in the rice cooker for 10 to 15 minutes covered
At this stage, the hot steam trapped in the rice cooker will complete the process of cooking the rice. As a result, the rice will not be too sticky or soggy when served.
In some cases, you can let the rice sit in the rice cooker for up to 30 minutes
Step 5. Stir the rice with a wooden spoon before serving
Cooked rice can be served directly from the rice cooker, or transferred to a serving bowl first.
Once the rice is removed, open the rice cooker to drain the remaining texture of the rice. Then, scrape the cooked rice and clean the inside of the rice cooker using a damp sponge or towel
Method 3 of 3: Microwave Cooking Rice
Step 1. Wash 225 grams of jasmine rice until the water color is clear
Generally, rice only needs to be washed 2 to 3 times to remove the excess flour that is attached to each grain. Be careful, rice that is not washed thoroughly will feel more sticky when cooked.
- Wash the rice in cold water, not hot water.
- Rice can be washed in a saucepan or using a special strainer.
Step 2. Pour the rice and water into a heatproof container
First of all, put the rice that has been washed thoroughly into a container with a capacity of 1.5 liters. Then, pour 475 ml of water into the container. Do not cover the surface of the container with plastic wrap or other covers.
- To enrich the taste of rice, add 1/8 tsp. salt.
- You can increase or decrease the amount of rice used, as long as the amount of water is also adjusted. In general, the correct ratio of rice to water is 1:2.
Step 3. Cook the rice on high heat for 10 minutes
After 10 minutes, most of the water should be absorbed into the rice. In addition, small holes will form on the surface of the rice as a way for water vapor to escape. If the rice you are cooking doesn't look like it, increase the cooking time in 1-2 minute intervals, until steam holes form on the surface of the rice.
- In fact, the cooking time in each microwave is not the same. That is why, sometimes the hole in question is not visible even though the rice has been cooked for 10 minutes.
- If the power of the microwave is very high, you may need to reduce the recommended cooking time. Remember, as long as the steam vent appears, it means the rice is cooked.
- Don't worry if the resulting rice looks undercooked, because the actual process of cooking rice doesn't end here.
Step 4. Cover the container with plastic wrap or a special lid, then cook for another 4 minutes
Always use oven-specific gloves to remove the container from the microwave. Once removed, cover the container with plastic wrap or a special lid. Then, return the container to the microwave, and continue to cook the rice for another 4 to 5 minutes.
- Don't make holes in the plastic wrap so the moisture can get trapped inside!
- At this stage, the rice should look almost cooked even though the cooking process has not been completed.
Step 5. After that, let the rice sit still covered for 5 minutes
At this stage, the moisture trapped behind the plastic wrap or the lid of the container will cook the rice well. If the texture of the rice is still too wet, continue the cooking process at 1 minute intervals until the rice is fully cooked.
If the texture of the rice is too dry, add a little water, close the container again, and continue the cooking process for 1 to 2 minutes to hydrate the rice
Step 6. Open the lid of the container or plastic wrap before serving the rice
Then, stir the rice using a fork or wooden spoon to make it a fluffier texture. Be careful when opening the cover or plastic wrap as the hot steam escaping will be very hot.
Tips
- The amount of rice can be reduced or increased, as long as the ratio of the doses of all ingredients remains the same.
- Wash the rice for 4 to 5 times if it will later be processed into fried rice.
- Choose good quality jasmine rice. Do not use “instant rice” or packaged rice.
- Cooked rice can be placed in an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- To enrich the taste of the rice, try replacing a portion of the water with chicken stock or coconut milk.
