Unlike other games, Skyrim doesn't require players to play their characters "as they should". Race, or races, which you choose at first will make certain playing styles easier but you will still have the freedom to use other styles. You always have the freedom to practice all abilities, be it combat, magic, crafting, or thievery, which will improve as you use them. Consider the advantages and suggested playstyles for each race, but feel free to try out any new ideas you have.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Selecting a Race Based on Playstyle
Step 1. Create a live fighter
If you enjoy slashing at enemies at close range, you have two main options. Also read the steps below to see other close combat options.
- Choose Nord if this is your first time playing Skyrim. Nord is proficient with two-handed weapons, earns more money from transactions, and earns bonuses when using Light Armor. His racial abilities make Nord more agile and able to survive at the beginning of the game.
- orc is a great melee fighter and has high defense. You'll get bonuses for crafting armor and weapons, bonuses when using one- or two-handed weapons, and get direct access to the shop and Orc trainers. Of the many advantages, of course you will get interesting combination ideas.
Step 2. Create a thief
If you enjoy hiding in the shadows as a stealing and exploration expert, Argonian or Khajiit is the right choice. From the start, these two breeds had high Lockpicking and Pickpocket abilities. These two abilities are very useful at the beginning of the game because they not only have to be used, but also have to be done successfully in order to reach a higher level.
- Argonian has the best Lockpicking ability at the start of the game. They also receive an additional higher stat when using Light Armor and have the special ability to heal wounds once a day. These advantages will give you an easier start to playing the Argonian as a master sneaker.
- The Khajiit are an all-rounder race who are adept at hand-to-hand combat, surprise attacks, and bows. This race is suitable for those of you who don't really like being a "pure" sneaker or want to be an all-around fighter.
Step 3. Create an assassin or archer character
This is the type of fighter that will be especially helpful if your character has an excess of Sneak, Archery, Alchemy, and/or Light Armor. The race suitable for this fighting style is Khajiit and Wood Elf. Dark Elf also a great option if you want to mix some magic into it.
Step 4. Create a sorcerer
There are several types of magic, or sorcery, in Skyrim and you can choose more than one. High Elf has advantages in the use of all five types of magic and a high amount of Magicka (power used to use magic). If you prefer to use summoning magic, Breton are a race that is proficient in Conjuration magic.
Step 5. Create a complex character
If you want to try a character that has a unique fighting style, try creating a character from the following races. Dark Elf can be played as assassins or mages thanks to their superiority in the use of attack and sneak magic. Although classified as a reliable close-range fighter, Imperial also adept at using healing magic. Final, Redguard which is the best one-handed weapon fighter and also quite strong in every way. Although it won't be as strong as other races that have advantages in certain fighting styles, Redguard is a great choice if you want to try all the fighting styles available.
Method 2 of 2: Considering Other Elements
Step 1. Find the race's most powerful special ability
If you're having trouble deciding, choose a race with abilities that will remain useful until the end of the game. Here are the abilities that will remain useful at high levels:
- Orc's Berserk and Breton's magic resistance were options that could be considered the most powerful and versatile in existence.
- Imperial and Nord have active abilities that will remain unique and effective, though not always versatile.
Step 2. Consider the use of race abilities from different angles
An ability that doesn't have an immediate effect can be very useful both in and out of combat. For example, the Dark Elf's fire resistance was definitely more useful than any other resistance. Wood Elf's poison and disease resistance is rarely needed, but it's very useful when you face certain conditions that are difficult for other races to deal with (Redguard and Argonian have half of each of these resistances).
Although Argonians can breathe underwater and Khajitt can see in the dark, this mechanic is actually rarely useful
Step 3. Don't think too much about the bonuses given by the races
The bonus will become less and less useful as your level, abilities, and perks increase. In the end, you can just choose a race that you like in appearance or background regardless of the bonuses they have.
Step 4. Select the gender of your character
Other than appearance, gender doesn't affect much. Some quests and perks can provide bonuses when interacting with the opposite sex, such as getting discounts or increasing damage value. It is said that female characters move more slowly than men, although it is difficult to prove. Gender also doesn't affect your love status or who you can marry.
Step 5. Consider a story or dialogue
Your race and gender will determine the dialogue that occurs during the game, but will not make any significant story changes. If you've played other Elder Scrolls series you'll probably choose a race for a specific reason, in contrast to new players who might choose a race based on first impressions. Even so, choosing based on first impressions is not wrong, as long as you enjoy the game.
Try to use different races and genders to expand your gaming experience when creating new characters
Step 6. Understand Skyrim's “class” system
If you've played the Elder Scrolls series or other RPG games, you'll notice that there's no class system in Skyrim. All actions will increase your abilities. For example, if you manage to pickpocket from someone, that ability will increase. The perk system that strengthens your character can also be upgraded without having to meet race or class requirements.
At the beginning of the game you will be introduced to Standing Stones which have names like classes in other games (thief, mage, and warrior). You can change it whenever you want
Step 7. Plan your character before creating it
If you are experienced, try to plan your character before creating it. Use the internet to learn about each race and simulate your character's plans.
Tips
Some races have other names, such as the Wood Elf who can be called by the name Bosmer. If a name sounds familiar, try looking it up on the internet. There are no “unlocked to playable” races in Skyrim
