Even if it seems like a simple procedure, properly stamping the envelope will ensure that your letter gets to its destination. Envelope size and letter weight will affect the type of postage stamped. Postage rules may vary from country to country and change over time. So, do not hesitate to ask the local post office to find out the current price of stamps.

Method 1 of 3: Determining the Type of Shipping Based on the Envelope
Step 1. Check your envelope size
Envelope sizes are usually listed on the sales package, or on the envelope itself. A size 14 envelope measures 12 x 25 cm and is considered the standard size. These envelopes are rectangular in shape and are usually sold at the nearest post office.
- You can also send a letter with an envelope smaller than a size 14, such as a size 10 (10 x 24 cm) with regular postage.
- If you can, fold your letter to fit in a standard rectangular envelope to reduce shipping costs.
- Envelopes larger than size 14 are categorized as large envelopes, so shipping costs are more expensive.
- Card-sized envelopes made to include wedding invitations or greeting cards usually also incur an extra shipping fee. This happens because the envelopes are oddly shaped or square made of rigid materials which damage the letter sorting machine so they need to be processed separately.
Step 2. Weigh your letter
Weigh the mail at the post office or just use a small scale. The weight and size of the letter (along with the envelope) will affect the shipping price or the cost of buying the postage. Often times, the heavier the letter, the higher the shipping price.
- Letters in standard envelopes weighing less than 0.3 kg can be sent via express at a fixed rate.
- Letters in standard envelopes weighing more than 0.3 kg will be placed in the priority category so the rates are higher.
Step 3. Decide if you want to send the letter by express, regular post, or other parcel delivery
There are various types of mail delivery handled by PT Pos Indonesia.
- In the United States, there is a First Class Mail delivery package for sending small letters of square shape and hard material. To send it, the letter must not exceed the weight of 0.3 kg. The cost of sending this service is flat, regardless of the distance of delivery. Letters will arrive at their destination within two to three days if sent to a domestic address. This service is suitable for sending personal letters because you only need standard postage and access to a postal box.
- In the United States there is also a Priority Mail service to send letters in one day. To use this service, your mail or parcel must not weigh more than 30 kg. You can request additional services at the post office, such as UPS Tracking or Registered Mail, especially if the letter contains sensitive or confidential information that must reach the recipient. The price of this service is set based on the distance of delivery; the further away, the more expensive. Rates are set based on 9 “zones”. For example, “Zone 1” is the local area or near where you live, while “Zone 9” is the farthest place from that location.
- The United States also has a standard postal service to send many letters at once, there must be at least 200 sheets or 20 kg of mail in one shipment. Envelopes must weigh less than 0.3 kg. Large envelopes are more expensive than mailing envelopes. People usually use this service to send brochures, marketing documents, newsletters, catalogs, and newsletters. You can only send it to a domestic address, and you can't send just one envelope with this service.
Method 2 of 3: Attaching Stamps to Standard Envelopes
Step 1. Choose the appropriate service according to the size, weight, and type of letter
If you want the letter to arrive quickly, choose an express post service. If you want regular shipping that arrives within 3 to 5 business days, choose standard post. If you are confused about which service is suitable, ask the nearest post office.
- In the United States, if you send a letter weighing less than 0.3 kg in a standard envelope to a domestic address, you will be charged approximately Rp. 5,000
- In the United States, mail weighing less than 0.3 kg from “Zone 1” (local address) can be sent via the Priority Mail service at a rate of IDR 60,000. This price can increase based on the “Zone” or the area that the letter is sent to.
Step 2. Glue the stamps to the envelope
If you are using sticker stamps, first peel off the paper on the back. If you are using a regular stamp, lick the back.
- Place the stamp in the upper right corner of the envelope. This allows the shipping sorter to “read” the envelope and process it.
- Make sure that the sender's address and the recipient's address are not covered with postage.
Step 3. Put the letter in the post box
You can put it in a post office box at the nearest post office, or in a post box in your area.
- You can also put the letter in a private postal box and have the postman pick it up.
- Any letter weighing more than 0.3 kg must be sent through the nearest post office.
Method 3 of 3: Putting Stamps in Large Envelopes
Step 1. Choose a service that matches the size, weight, and type of letter
Use the express post service if you want the mail to arrive quickly. If you want regular delivery to deliver mail within 3 to 5 business days, choose standard post. If you are confused about which service is suitable, ask the nearest post office.
- In the United States, sending letters weighing less than 0.3 kg with large envelopes to domestic addresses using First Class Mail services is subject to a tariff of IDR 10,000.
- In the United States, mail weighing less than 0.3 kg placed in a large envelope (approximately 35-1.5 cm x 20-1.5 cm) and sent to “Zone 1” (local) with the Priority Mail service is charged IDR 60,000. The delivery price may increase based on the “Zone: or area to which the letter is sent.
Step 2. Glue the stamps on the envelope
If you are using regular stamps, lick the back of the sticker. Sticker stamps can be used by peeling off the back.
- Place the stamp in the upper right corner of the envelope. Make sure the stamps align with the mailing address in the upper-left corner of the envelope.
- Do not cover or block the address of the sender or recipient of the letter with postage.
Step 3. Send the letter
Put the letter in the mailbox at the nearest post office or in the post box in your area.
- You can also put the letter in the home post box. The postman will pick it up and send it to you.
- Letters weighing more than 0.3 kg must be sent through the nearest post office.
