You can enhance the look of the PowerPoint presentation or slide that you created by adding a video. If you have video files on your computer, you can attach them to your presentation. You can also post videos from YouTube. If you're using an older version of PowerPoint, you may not be able to embed video in your presentation, but instead, you can insert a link to the video file you want.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Installing Videos from Files
Step 1. Make sure you have the latest Office updates installed
You can get the best results if you have installed the latest updates for Office. Integrations are usually installed through the Windows Update service. Read the article on how to update Windows for more information.
This step can be followed for PowerPoint 2016, 2013, and 2010
Step 2. Open the presentation page to which you want to add a video
You can embed the video on any page in the presentation.
Step 3. Click the “Insert” tab
After that, various options in the menu will be displayed.
Step 4. Click the “Video” button in the “Media” section
After that, a small menu will appear on the screen.
Step 5. Select “Video on My PC”
After that, the file manager window will appear.
If you are using a Mac operating system, select “Movie from File”
Step 6. Find the video you want to add
Use the file manager to locate the video file that you want to add to the presentation. There are a few things to keep in mind when you're looking for video files:
- Different versions of PowerPoint support different sets of video formats. For example, PowerPoint 2016 supports almost all video formats, including MP4 and MKV. Meanwhile, PowerPoint 2010 provides the least support for video formats (it can only support MPG, WMV, ASF, and AVI format videos).
- Try to avoid installing AVI-formatted videos because these videos often require additional codecs which complicate the video viewing process. You can use a free formatting program (eg Adapter) to convert the AVI file into a more suitable MP4 file. Read the article on how to convert AVI files to MP4 for more information.
Step 7. Wait for the video to be added to the presentation
The processing time will depend on the size of the video. The progress of adding will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
Step 8. Click the “Playback” tab
In this section, you can adjust the viewing settings of the videos that have been added. If you don't find the tab, make sure the added video is selected or clicked.
Step 9. Use the “Start” drop-down menu to specify how the video plays
By default, you need to click on the video to play it. If you select “Automatically”, the video will play when the presentation page is displayed.
You can set the video to play back automatically by checking the appropriate setting boxes
Step 10. Resize the video by dragging the corners
You can convert the video into different sizes by dragging the corners of the video. Click and drag the video to change its position on the presentation page.
Step 11. Save the presentation to which the video has been added
Your video has been attached to the presentation. The saved PowerPoint presentation file includes any videos that have been added. This way, you don't have to worry if you forget to send the appropriate video file along with the presentation file because the video is already 'packaged' with the presentation file. However, keep in mind that the size of the presentation file will also increase due to the attached video.
You don't need to go through a specific save process to save a presentation file that comes with a video. Just select “Save” from the “File” menu, and save the presentation file as usual
Method 2 of 3: Installing YouTube Videos
Step 1. Update your Office programs to the latest versions
Having the latest version of Office can help the process of installing YouTube videos run smoothly. Office can be updated through Windows Update services or tools. Read the article on how to update Windows for more information.
- You can embed YouTube videos in presentations using PowerPoint 2016, 2013, and 2010. YouTube is the only video streaming site supported by PowerPoint.
- You cannot mount YouTube videos using PowerPoint for the Mac version of the operating system.
Step 2. Open the YouTube video that you want to attach to the presentation
Use a browser to open the page of the YouTube video that you want to add to the presentation.
YouTube is the only video streaming site supported by PowerPoint
Step 3. Click the “Share” button present on the YouTube video page
After that, the video sharing options will be displayed on the page.
Step 4. Click the “Embed” tab
This tab appears after you click the “Share” button.
Step 5. Copy the marked installation code
The code will automatically be flagged. Press the Ctrl+C key combination or right-click on the code selection and click “Copy”.
Step 6. Open the PowerPoint presentation page to which you want to add a video
You can embed a YouTube video on any page in your presentation.
Step 7. Click the “Insert” tab in PowerPoint
You can see several options for inserting different types of objects in your presentation.
Step 8. Click the “Video” button and select “Online Video”
If you are using PowerPoint 2010, click “Video from Web Site”.
Step 9. Click the box labeled “Paste embed code here” and paste the copied code
You can press the Ctrl+V key combination or right click on the box and select “Paste”.
In PowerPoint 2010, the box is labeled “Insert Video From Website”
Step 10. Put the video on the presentation page
After a few moments, the video will appear on the presentation page. Installed videos will show up as a full black box, but you don't have to worry as this is normal.
Step 11. Click the “Playback” tab
After that, the video viewer setting options will be displayed. If you don't see the tab, make sure the video you've entered is selected or clicked.
Step 12. Click the “Start” drop-down menu and specify how the video plays
If you do not select one of the options from the menu, your video will not play while the presentation is showing.
There are several video playback options that you can customize. However, the option in the “Start” menu is the most important option to adjust so that the video can be played in the presentation
Step 13. Make sure your computer or laptop is connected to the internet when you are presenting
Installed YouTube videos can only be played if you are connected to the internet. Installing a video does not necessarily make the video playable when the device is outside the network (offline).
Method 3 of 3: Installing Video File Links (for PowerPoint 2007)
Step 1. Place the desired video file in the same directory as the PowerPoint file
If you are using PowerPoint version 2007 or earlier, the video file cannot be attached to the presentation, but instead is 'linked'. This means that the video you want to install is not included in the presentation file. The video file is stored separately from the presentation file and when the presentation is displayed, the video is opened or played from a specific location or directory. Even though the file links are not displayed directly, PowerPoint still needs the exact location of the video file on the computer for the video to play.
Videos can only be installed (included in presentation files) if you are using PowerPoint 2010 version or later
Step 2. Open the presentation page to which you want to add a video
You can add a video to any page in the presentation.
Step 3. Click the “Insert” tab
After that, various options for inserting objects in the presentation will be displayed.
Step 4. Click the “Movie” button, then select “Movie from File”
After that, a file manager window will appear and you can select the desired video file from that window.
Step 5. Find the video file that you want to link
PowerPoint 2007 only supports a few video formats, such as AVI, MPG, and WMV. If you are using an AVI-formatted video, it's a good idea to first convert the format to MPG or WMV to avoid codec problems when playing the video.
Step 6. Decide how to play the video
Once the video is selected, you will be asked to specify how the video will play. If you select “Automatically”, the video will start playing when the presentation page is displayed. If you select “When Clicked”, you need to click the video first to play the video.
Step 7. Use the “Package for CD” feature if you want to send a presentation file
Because the video is playing from a specific location or directory, the recipient of the presentation file cannot see the video when you send the file, unless you are also sending the video file. By using the “Package for CD” feature, you can send presentation files and related media in one package.
- Click the Office button and select “Publish”.
- Select “Package for CD” then select your presentation.
- Make sure the “Linked files” option in the “Options” menu is selected.
