A woman's jewelery is often her most prized possession, but sometimes storing jewelery becomes a problem as her collection grows over time. Here are some ways to make your own jewelry box to keep your precious collection safe. This box can also be a sweet and personal gift!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Two-Color Wooden Jewelry Box
Step 1. Measure and cut the wood for the top, base and sides of the jewelry box
For this step, you will need twelve pieces of wood cut to 240 mm and six pieces of wood cut to 248 mm, all about 2.5 cm wide and 0.625 cm high. Use a hand saw to cut wood.
- Make sure the width and height of all 18 pieces of wood are exactly the same.
- Try buying a log that has been cut with a width of 2.5 cm and a height of 0.625 cm. That way you only need to cut to length.
Step 2. Measure and cut the wood for the ends of the jewelry box
You will need to cut 12 pieces of 50 mm each, with the same dimensions as the other pieces of wood (2.5 cm in width and 0.625 cm in height).
Step 3. Sand the sawed edges
To remove sharp edges from saw cutting, you can smooth the edges of the wood with sandpaper.
Step 4. Paint the wood
To achieve a beautiful two-tone look, you will need to color half of the wood pieces (all sizes). So divide the two pieces of wood and apply the dye to one group.
- Choose any wood stain color that you like, as long as it contrasts with the original wood color. Use a lot of dye and wipe off the excess with paper towels or a towel. You will need to cover the surface of both sides, but it is not necessary to color all the sides that are 0.625 cm because these sides will be glued together.
- Allow the dye to dry (at least 4 hours) until you move on to the next step.
Step 5. Create the sides
Take six pieces of wood cut 248 mm in length and line them up. Each side of the jewelry box will be made of three of the six pieces.
- Use wood glue to glue the strips of wood lengthwise into two halves of three pieces each, making sure you alternate between the stained and uncolored wood for a two-toned look.
- Wash off the excess glue that comes out of the gap where the wood meets.
- Make sure the edges line up perfectly and allow the glue to dry. You can clamp two pieces of these three woods together for a stronger bond if desired.
- To prevent the wood from sticking to any surface you use, maybe you can put a layer of clear plastic over your work surface.
Step 6. Create the base section
Alternating between the stained and uncolored pieces of wood, line six 240mm pieces of wood on top of the plastic to make the base of the jewelry box. Glue the strips together, but the ends are interspersed with 0.625 cm (the end pieces will fit in the gap).
Step 7. Create the ends
Line up the short strips you cut (the 50 mm ones), alternating stained and uncolored wood, at each end of the base. Each end is 6 pieces long.
Because of the way you offset the edges of the base, one section will be parallel to the workbench and parallel to the section, while the next piece is on top of the base, and so on
Step 8. Glue the sides
Glue the sides of the jewelry box to the frame you have made (from the base and the ends). Let the frame dry completely before you move on to the next step.
You can use several pieces of wood to fit in the box to help keep the shape of the frame from changing as it dries
Step 9. Use Vaseline to keep the cover from sticking
Apply a small amount of Vaseline to the parallel lines of the ends (50 mm pieces) to keep the cover from sticking to the frame with excess glue as you glue it.
Step 10. Make the top cover
Glue the remaining six 240 mm pieces to each other on top of the frame. As before, alternating between the stained and uncolored pieces of wood. The pieces will fit in the existing gaps formed from the ends of the parallel lines.
Once all the pieces are assembled, you will get a perfect rectangular box
Step 11. Clamp the box to dry
To help the jewelry box dry in the correct shape, secure the two sides of the box with a tweezer. Once the glue dries, your jewelry box is finished.
Method 2 of 3: Making a Jewelry Box from an Old Book
Step 1. Select an old book
The only requirement is a hardcover book; You can use any type, even textbooks you no longer use!
The length of the book is up to you, but remember, the shorter (long) the book, the smaller your jewelry box will be
Step 2. Draw a rectangle in the book
Open the book and, on the first page, draw a rectangle using your ruler. The line should be 2.5 cm from the edge around the book.
Step 3. Cut the pages of the book
Use the X-Acto knife to cut along the rectangular lines you've drawn. It helps to use cuts along the lines of your ruler to keep the cuts as straight as possible.
- Cut around the perimeter and remove the rectangular page pieces from the center. Do as much as needed.
- Remember, the thicker the book, the more cuts you will need to make as the X-Acto knife can only cut a few pages at a time.
- When cutting, using a large clip (binder clip) will help keep the cropped page in position. This will keep the pages you have cut from being interrupted by the ongoing cutting process.
Step 4. Shake the book to remove any remaining pieces of paper
When you cut, small pieces of paper will get stuck in the pages of the book. Hold the book cover upside down and shake it to remove any pieces.
Step 5. Paste the pages
Use Mod Podge (craft adhesive/sealant) to glue all the pages together. First, dip a paint brush in the adhesive and brush it between several pages so that it sticks. Then, brush the outside of the page as well as the edges of the exposed page within your cut rectangle. You can glue the pages to the base cover, but leave the top cover of the book, don't apply glue.
- Alternatively, you can use regular water-based glue (Elmers, etc.) in addition to Mod Podge.
- It takes about 10 minutes for the glue to dry completely.
- Once the book is completely dry, the front cover of the book can be lifted to reveal the rectangular pages you've cut out where you can store your jewelry.
Step 6. Decorate the outside
If you want, you can decorate the outside of the book to make it more attractive. You can glue rhinestones or patterned fabrics (flowers, etc.) to your liking.
Method 3 of 3: Making a Jewelry Box from Fabric and Foam Board
Step 1. Make a jewelry box frame from foam board
Take a 20 by 20 cm piece of foam board and use a ruler to draw a square inside it, 4 cm from around the edge.
To do this, measure 4 cm from one end of the foam board (and mark the point) and do it on the other side. Draw a line connecting the two points. Then, repeat this step on three sides of the foam board
Step 2. Cut the corners of the foam board
The intersection of the lines you drew in the previous step will create a square shape in all four corners of the foam board square. Cut a square at each corner using an X-Acto knife.
Step 3. Cut the foam board to make the jewelry box frame
Above the line you drew to create a smaller square in the center of the foam board, use an X-Acto knife to make shallow cuts along the line. This will make four shallow line cuts on the foam board.
Be careful not to cut through the foam board
Step 4. Make the cube shape of the jewelry box
Fold each side of the foam board along the shallow cut line. This will create a cube shape (excluding the top part of the "cube").
Use tape to secure the sides of the cube so that the foam board doesn't change its position
Step 5. Glue the fabric on the box
For this step, you will need a piece of fabric (whichever pattern you like) that measures 24 cm by 24 cm. lay out the fabric (pattern below) and place the cube you have made on it.
- You should place the cube so that the corner of the fabric is parallel to the flat side of the cube.
- Use fabric glue to glue the fabric to the cube. You need to place the glue on the triangular corners of the fabric and drag it to the edge of the jewelry box cube. Do it on all four sides.
Step 6. Create the base of the jewelry box
Take a piece of cardboard and cut a 10 cm by 10 cm square.
- Use fabric glue to glue it to the base of the jewelry box.
- You can choose any cardboard color you like. But remember this cardboard will be the base of the visible jewelry box, so make sure the color or design matches the look.
Step 7. Create the top of the jewelry box
Cut the foam board into squares measuring 11 cm by 11 cm. Glue the same piece of foam (which is also 11 cm by 11 cm) on the foam board.
- Take a 15cm by 15cm piece of fabric and glue it to the top you made when you glued the fabric to the cube, pulling the triangles on the fabric down the square of the foam board. Align the triangle points with the flat side of the foam board and glue them to the foam board.
- Again, you can choose the fabric with whatever design you want. Just make sure it matches or complements the motif you use on the base of the jewelry box.
Step 8. Glue the top to the base of the jewelry box
Cut the appropriate fabric that measures 4 cm by 10 cm. Glue the piece of fabric along the long side of the base, gluing only the bottom half to the base. Then glue the top half of the strip of fabric to the top.
Step 9. Decorate the box according to your taste
You can leave it alone, or add a decorative ribbon around the outside to add a design element.
Tips
- Make all folds and curves straight. A ruler with metal edges might help.
- Make sure all measurements are accurate; folds and bends as accurately as possible.
