Glittering wine glasses are perfect for birthdays, weddings, and other extravagant occasions. You can use masking tape to create sharp lines and designs on the glass, then attach the glitter to the wine glass using glass glue. The process can take several hours, including drying, but is easy and fun.

Part 1 of 3: Making a Glittering Wine Glass
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
Making sparkling glass is easy, but you'll need certain materials and tools to do it. Some of the things needed include:
- Glass glue, e.g. Mod Podge or other products
- Wine glass
- Cardboard
- Paper plate
- duct tape
- Large paint brush
- glitter
- Scissors
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Cotton
- Tape
Step 2. Make a design sketch first
Make a design on paper to see if it looks good so you can avoid mistakes later. While you can remove any wet glitter and glue to change the design, it's better to apply a design that's really good. Some popular designs for twinkling wine glasses include:
- Only apply glitter to the bottom of the wine glass, leaving the rest of the glass empty. Glitter can also be extended about 2 to 3 cm above the stem of the glass.
- Just dab the glitter on the stem of the glass, and leave the rest of the glass blank.
- Use glitter to make numbers or initials
- Use glitter to make stripes all over the glass (or just the stem).
- Apply glitter all over the glass, except for the top, which leaves about 2 to 3 cm from the rim of the glass.
- Make a design with 2 different glitter colors.
- Make an ombre design (color gradation) by mixing two colors.
Step 3. Prepare the workplace
Find a flat table, then cover it with newspaper. You'll be dealing with glue and glitter which can make the workplace messy. You should also prepare small pieces of cardboard or cardboard to use as a glitter holder. This will make it easier for you to return the excess glitter to the bottle for use in other projects.
Step 4. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the outside of the glass
In order for the glitter to stick well to the glass, clean the glass thoroughly. Use a cotton swab dipped in isopopril alcohol to wipe the outer surface of the glass where you want to apply glitter.
After cleaning, set the glass aside for a few minutes to allow the alcohol to dry
Step 5. Cut the tape thinly, then stick it on the glass
Take the tape and cut it lengthwise and thinly to form a line. If you want to stick glitter to the stem of the glass, you can use a short strip of masking tape. Stick the tape on the wine glass where you want to glitter. Make sure the tape is straight and firmly against the glass. Otherwise, the glitter line around the glass will be bent.
- To attach the glitter to the bottom of the glass, attach the tape to the stem of the glass and leave the bottom without the tape. You can also leave the stems open 2 to 3 cm long. This way, the glitter will extend all the way to the stem of the glass.
- To apply glitter to the stem of the glass, cover the bottom of the glass with tape. Next, cover the bottom of the bowl with tape.
- If you want to make numbers or initials with glitter, you can use a glue stencil or apply glue directly to the glass by hand.
- If you want to make lines on a wine glass, wrap a long piece of tape around the glass in a spiral to create a candy cane effect. You must leave some space between each edge of the tape.
- If you want to use 2 or more colors, apply masking tape to the areas where you don't want glitter, then apply glue to the area of the first color. After the glitter is applied and the glue dries, apply the glue and glitter again for the next color.
- For an ombre effect, apply masking tape to the bottom and top of the design, then work on the areas between the pieces of tape.
Step 6. Pour the glass glue into the paper plate
Pour a large amount of glass glue into the paper plate as you should be able to dip the brush in the glue. Use a thick coat of glue so that the glitter will adhere well to the glass.
Step 7. Apply glue to the bottom of the glass
When the tape is firmly attached, dip the paint brush in the glue. Next, start applying glue to the bottom of the glass. Apply glue in a thick, even layer on the wine glass.
You can also use a foam brush if you're worried about scratching the glass. Foam brushes are able to spread paint more evenly than bristle brushes
Step 8. Pour the glitter over the glue
Once the glue has been applied to the wine glass, set the brush aside. Next, hold the part of the wine glass that is not smeared with glue. Hold the glass over the cardboard and start pouring the glitter over the area of the wine glass that has been smeared with glue.
- Keep pouring the glitter on the glass until the entire area that is coated with glue is covered by the glitter evenly.
- When you're done, return the remaining glitter to the bottle. Take the cardboard and bend it in such a way to form a funnel, then pour the glitter into the bottle.
- If you want to use multiple colors of glitter, let the first coat dry before applying new glue to the glass. Next, pour in the second glitter color as you did for the first layer.
Part 2 of 3: Doing the Final Settlement
Step 1. Let the glass dry
Dry the wine glass for about 1 hour, but you can also leave it to dry overnight to allow the glass to dry completely. The glass must be completely dry before you apply the finishing touches.
Remember, if you want to add a new layer of glitter, you can do this after the first coat has dried
Step 2. Remove the tape
Once the glass is dry, gently peel off the tape. Once the tape is removed, there will be a sharp line separating the glitter-covered glass from the non-glittered part. Discard the tape.
Step 3. Seal the glitter
The next step is to seal the glitter with glue or a sealant, such as Krylon Crystal Clear. To seal the glass surface with glue, use a large brush to apply the glue over the glitter. After that, let the glass dry for at least 1 hour.
If you want to use a sealing spray, do the process outside. Take the glass outdoors and place it on newsprint, then spray the glitter-coated area with Krylon Crystal Clear. Next, let the glass dry for at least 1 hour
Step 4. Tie the ribbon to the stem of the glass
For a nice finishing touch, tie a ribbon to the top of the stem of the glass. Finish the ribbon ties in a beautiful knot as desired. Now the wine glass is ready to use or as a gift.
Part 3 of 3: Caring for Wine Glass
Step 1. Use a glass when it is completely dry
Glitter can smudge or come off easily if it's still wet. To allow the glitter to dry completely, allow the glass to dry overnight. Place the glass in a dry location out of reach of pets and children.
Step 2. Wash the glass by hand
The surface of the glitter that sticks to the wine glass will be brittle so you must handle it carefully when cleaning it to prevent the glitter from coming off. Hand wash the glitter-coated wine glasses by hand and try not to touch the glitter when washing them. Focus on cleaning the inside and edges of the glass.
Avoid rubbing the wine glass. Instead, wipe the glass with a soft sponge and avoid the glittery areas. Do not use the dishwasher to clean glasses
Step 3. Dry the wine glass immediately
Don't let the glitter-coated glass stay wet. When washing glasses by hand, make sure to dry them immediately with a soft towel. Otherwise, the adhering liquid could cause the glitter to crack and peel off.
Tips
- You can use this method on other glass objects, such as vases or jars.
- Try using a medium other than glitter (eg sand). You can also try other methods of decorating wine glasses.
Warning
- When using spray paint or sealants, carry out the process in a well-ventilated area.
- Wash the wine glass gently, and don't rub it. You should use a soft sponge and avoid areas covered in glitter, whenever possible.
- Do not apply glitter to the inside of the glass or too close to the rim of the glass.
