4 Ways to Knit a Star

Star crochet is very easy if you know a few basic crochet stitches. Here are a few different patterns you can try.

Method 1 of 4: Basic pentagon star

Step 1. Knit a ring or magic ring

A magic ring is a basic type of adjustable ring made by forming a ring with thread, pulling a loop through it, and sewing the chain to form the side of the ring. This does not count as your first stage.

Form a circle around your fingers with the long end to the right and the short end (tail) to the left.
Thread the knitting needle through the loop, grab the long end of the yarn from the back, and pull it through the front.
Make a chain stitch twice.
Pull the two ends in opposite directions to close the ring.

Step 2. Complete the first stage

Make ten double crochet stitches into the magic ring. When you're done, join the last double stitch with the first using a slip stitch.

To make a double crochet, wind the yarn over the knitting needle, thread the knitting needle into the ring, and loop the yarn over the knitting needle again.
- Pull the yarn through the ring, wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again, and pull the top of the yarn through the two loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time and pull this new section through the last two loops on the knitting needle.
To make a slip stitch, insert the knitting needle into the next stitch at this stage, hook the thread, and pull it through your project stitch and loop on your knitting needle.

Step 3. Make the first facet

Knit two chain stitches. In the next stitch from the previous step, sew the double crochet once. Make three more chain stitches, then work two single stitches around the stalk or vertical section of the previous double crochet stitch. Slip stitch into the next stitch from step one.

For single crochet stitches, thread your needle through the proper stitch, catch the thread, and pull the thread back through the stitch.
- Catch the thread again.
- Pull the yarn back through the two loops on the knitting needle so that only one loop remains on the knitting needle.
When making this double crochet stitch, thread the knitting needle into the first stitch of the previous step. Complete the double crochet steps as before to make the stitch.

Step 4. Repeat the same steps for the remaining four faces

Form four more rectangles using the same technique you used for the first. When you're done, finish the last one by slipping the stitch into the first stitch at the start.

Knit two chain stitches.
In the next stitch, double crochet once.
Make three more chain stitches.
Slip stitch into the next stitch.
Work two single stitches around the stalk of the double crochet stitch.
Slip stitch into the next stitch to finish each facet.

Step 5. Weave the ends

Cut the thread and weave the ends inward to hide it. With this, your star is done.

You can use a sewing needle to weave the ends in, or you can tie the short end of the thread to one of the stitches and trim it to hide it from view.

Method 2 of 4: Basic Hexagon Star

Step 1. Knit a magic ring

- Pull the yarn through the ring, wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again, and pull the top of the yarn through the two loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time and pull this new section through the last two loops on the knitting needle.
To make a slip stitch, thread the knitting needle into the next stitch at this stage, hook the thread, and pull it through your project stitch and loop on your knitting needle.

Step 3. Finish one facet

Chain stitch twice before double stitching into the next stitch in the previous step. Chain stitch three more times, then work two single crochet stitches onto the stalk or vertical section of the double crochet stitch. Slip stitch into the next stitch in the previous step to close the facet.

For single crochet stitches, thread your needle through the proper stitch, catch the thread, and pull the thread back through the stitch.
- Catch the thread again.
- Pull the yarn back through the two loops on the knitting needle so that only one loop remains on the knitting needle.
For this double crochet, work the knitting needle into the first stitch of the previous stage instead of the magic ring loop.

Step 4. Repeat five more times

Follow the same steps you used to complete the first facet to complete five more faces. Complete the second stage of this facet by slipping the stitch into the first stitch from the beginning.

Knit two chain stitches.
In the next stitch, double crochet once.
Make three more chain stitches.
Slip stitch into the next stitch.
Work two single stitches around the stalk of the double crochet stitch.
Slip stitch into the next stitch to finish each facet.

Step 5. Weave the ends

Cut the yarn and weave the ends inward to hide them. Your star is done.

You can use a sewing needle to weave the ends in, or you can tie the base of the thread to one of the stitches and trim it to hide it from view.

Method 3 of 4: Multi-Colored Hexagon Stars

Step 1. Knit a magic ring

Start with your first color, or Color A.
Form a circle around your fingers with the long end to the right and the short end to the left.
Thread the knitting needle through the loop, grab the long end of the yarn from the back, and pull it through the front.
Make a single chain stitch.
Pull the two ends in opposite directions to close the ring.

Step 2. Make a chain stitch and a single stitch to form the first stage

Make ten single crochet stitches into the center of the magic ring. Join the end of the seam with the first stitch with a slip stitch.

For single crochet stitches, thread your needle through the proper stitch, catch the thread, and pull the thread back through the stitch.
- Catch the thread again.
- Pull the yarn back through the two loops on the knitting needle so that only one loop remains on the knitting needle.

Step 3. Change the colors before knitting the second stage

Pull the second color yarn, Color B, onto the knitting needle. Knit a single chain, then make two single crochet stitches into the first stitch of the previous step. Work one single crochet stitch into the next stitch from the previous step, then repeat. Join the first single crochet stitch in step two using a slip stitch.

To make a slip stitch, thread the knitting needle into the next stitch at this stage, hook the thread, and pull it through your project stitch and loop on your knitting needle

Step 4. Change the color before proceeding to the third stage

Drag the third yarn color, Color C, onto the knitting needle. Knit five chain stitches and then make a single stitch into the second chain of knitting needles. Double crochet into the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, and triple crochet in the next stitch. This creates one facet of the star.

Skip two stitches and join the long ends of the yarn to the previous stage using a slip stitch.
Make the chain stitch five more times and repeat the quadrangle process again.
To make a half-double crochet stitch, wind the yarn over the knitting needle and thread the knitting needle into the correct stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again and pull the yarn through the stitch.
- Place the yarn onto the knitting needle one more time before pulling it through all three loops on the needle to complete the half-double crochet.
To make a double crochet, wind the yarn over the knitting needle, thread the knitting needle into the proper stitch, and loop the yarn over the knitting needle again.
- Pull this thread through the stitch, loop the thread over the knitting needle again, and pull the top of the thread through the two loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time and pull this new section through the last two loops on the knitting needle.
To make a triple crochet, wind the yarn through the knitting needle twice before threading it into the proper stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time before pulling the needle and thread back through the stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again and pull it through the first two loops, leaving three loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn around the knitting needle and pull it through the top two loops.
- Wrap the yarn around the knitting needle and pull it through the two remaining loops on the knitting needle. This completes the triple crochet.

Step 5. Make a single stitch around the edges of the five sides

As you do this, slip stitch on the first slip stitch and make two single crochet stitches on the top of each side.

Cut the thread, secure it, and weave the ends inward. Or, you can also just tie the ends into a knot

Step 6. Make slip stitches on the surface around the edges

Make an initial slip stitch to get a new circle of Color A onto the knitting needle. Slip stitch on the surface around the inner edge of the star, then slip stitch on the inner surface of the circle around the center edge as well.

Step 7. Weave the ends

Cut the yarn and weave the original end into the crochet star to hide it. This completes the star.

You can use a sewing needle to weave the ends, or you can tie the base of the thread to one of the stitches and trim the ends to hide them from view

Method 4 of 4: Little Star of Hope

Step 1. Knit a magic ring

Form a circle around your fingers with the tip to the right and the base to the left.
Thread the knitting needle through the loop, grab the end of the yarn from the back, and pull it through the front.
Make a one-time chain stitch.
Pull the two ends away from each other to close the loop.

Step 2. Make five single stitches

For your first stage, pull five single crochet stitches through the hole in the center of the core loop. Sew the final loop with a slip stitch into the first single crochet in this stage to close it.

For single crochet stitches, thread your needle through the proper stitch, catch the thread, and pull the thread back through the stitch.
- Catch the thread again.
- Pull the yarn back through the two loops on the knitting needle so that only one loop remains on the knitting needle.
To make a slip stitch, thread the knitting needle into the next stitch at this stage, hook the thread, and pull it through your project stitch and loop on your knitting needle.

Step 3. Make chain and single stitches to form the second stage

Make one chain, then make two single crochet stitches in the next stitch from the previous step. Repeat this five times, then close this step with another slip stitch.

Step 4. Form the third stage with half double stitches, double stitches, and triple stitches

To form the star facet, you will need to make a half crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, double crochet, half double crochet in the same stitch, which is the next stitch from the previous stage. Repeat this four more times to get five faces.

Make a semi-double crochet by wrapping the yarn around the knitting needle and threading the knitting needle into the correct stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again and pull the yarn through the stitch.
- Place the yarn onto the knitting needle one more time before pulling it through all three loops on the needle to complete the half double crochet.
To make a double crochet, wind the yarn over the knitting needle, thread the knitting needle into the ring, and loop the yarn over the knitting needle again.
- Pull the yarn through the ring, wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again, and pull the top of the yarn through the two loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time and pull this new section through the last two loops on the knitting needle.
For a triple crochet, wind the yarn over the knitting needle twice before threading it into the proper stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle one more time before pulling the needle and thread back through the stitch.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle again and pull it through the first two loops, leaving three loops on the knitting needle.
- Wrap the yarn around the knitting needle and pull it through the top two loops.
- Wrap the yarn over the knitting needle and pull it through the two remaining loops on the knitting needle. This completes the triple crochet.

Step 5. Make a second star

Use the same method described above to create a second star with the same color and ratio as the first.

Cut the short end of the thread, leaving enough length left to sew the sides together. Weave the center end into the seam on the star

Step 6. Fill and sew the two stars together

Use a threaded dart needle with the remaining end thread from your star to sew the sides together. Before sewing the last 1.25 cm, fill it with a small amount of fiber stuffing, making the star a little more "bloated." Finish the side seams to complete the project.
