There are many different ingredients and methods for making pom-poms. In addition to cheering at a sports game or other event, you can make pom-poms from wool yarn for knitting or crepe paper for decoration. Prepare all the materials needed if you want to make all three.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making Pom-Poms from Wool Yarn
Step 1. Prepare 2 sheets of thick cardboard
Make two equal circles out of thick cardboard, then cut out triangles like cake slices. Make a small circle in the middle, then cut it out so it looks like a keyhole. Remember that the diameter of the circle must match the diameter of the pom-pom to be made.
You can make a circle by free drawing. For a neater result, make a circle following the rim of the bowl or glass, then cut it according to the image you just made
Step 2. Slide a piece of yarn between 2 pieces of cardboard in a circle shape
Place a piece of thread on top of the first cardboard following the shape of the keyhole, then place the second cardboard on top of it. Position the two cartons so that the edges overlap.
The thread between the two cardboards is needed to tie the spool of yarn that will form the pom-pom. Prepare the thread a bit long so that both ends dangle on the edge of the cardboard cut into a triangle
Step 3. Roll the woolen thread on cardboard in a ring shape
Insert the end of the thread into a small loop, then wind the thread on the cardboard repeatedly about 100 times or until it forms a fairly thick skein.
Pom-poms are denser the thicker the spool of yarn
Step 4. Cut the skein of yarn
Slide the scissors between the two cardboards, then cut the bend of the thread on the outer edge of the cardboard as gently as possible.
When cutting the yarn, hold the two strands of yarn that were placed between the two pieces of cardboard. This thread is used to tie the pom-poms
Step 5. Tie the dangling thread by making a dead knot
The yarn for tying the pom-poms is in the right position because it has been prepared before you wind the yarn on the cardboard.
Step 6. Remove the two pieces of cardboard from the spool of yarn
You can remove the cardboard once the pom-poms are tightly tied with long string. Save the cardboard so you can use it again if you want to make pom-poms.
Step 7. Use scissors to trim the pom-pom
Trim the ends of the yarn that form the ball so that nothing sticks out. Trim the pom-poms until you get the result you want. This step makes the pom-pom more spongy, dense, and round.
Do not cut the pom-pom binding thread, unless it is not necessary
Step 8. Use the newly created pom-poms
At this time, pom-poms are ready to be used, for example, to decorate knitting or embroidery. Also, use dangling yarn to attach pom-poms to hats, scarves, sweaters, and more.
Method 2 of 3: Making Pom-Poms for the Cheerleaders
Step 1. Arrange 10 pieces of the basket on top of each other
In addition to black and white, the color of the kerosene bag is very diverse. If you want to make colorful pom-poms, prepare a bag of different colors and arrange them alternately.
Step 2. Cut the top and bottom of the bag
Cut the two handles of the plastic bag, then cut the top and bottom sides of the bag with a width of 2-3 cm.
Step 3. Fold the two now-square-shaped baskets
Fold the two baskets together so that the four sides overlap each other. Make sure that the bag is neatly arranged.
Step 4. Cut out the folds of the plastic bag
After folding in half, cut the bag according to the fold you just made so that it produces 20 pieces of rectangular-shaped pieces of the bag that are stacked on top of each other. Cut slowly and make sure the sides are not jagged.
Step 5. Cut the plastic bag to fray
Place the pieces of the bag in a vertical position, then cut from the bottom to the center starting from the side that was just cut. Make tassels 1½-2 cm wide as needed. When you're done, repeat this step to make the tassels on the other side. When cutting, make sure the center is still connected 5-6 cm wide.
Step 6. Tie the pieces of the bag
Hold the bag of crackers in the center like you would a dry pasta stick. Grasp the uncut center while guiding the tassel down, then wrap regular or electrical project tape for extra strength.
Step 7. Refresh the tassels
Hold the pieces of the crackle bag that are currently in strips, then separate them sheet by sheet to expand. Squeeze each newly separated strip to make the pom-poms denser.
The pom-poms are finished and ready to go! Make another one so you have a pair
Method 3 of 3: Making Pom-Poms out of Crepe Paper
Step 1. Stack six square sheets of crepe paper
Place the crepe paper on the table and make sure all the corners are neatly arranged.
Use less crepe paper if you want to make small pom-poms or vice versa
Step 2. Fold one side of the crepe paper so that it looks like an accordion
Grasp one side of the stack of crepe paper, then fold it up to the other side like an accordion shape. For that, bend the paper forward, then bend it back repeatedly until the entire paper is folded.
If you want to make small pom-poms, cut the crepe paper in the middle (after folding it into an accordion shape) into 2 equal parts. So you've got 2 stacks of crepe paper to make 2 pom-poms, but shorter
Step 3. Cut both ends of the folded crepe paper
You can cut the edge of the crepe paper into a tapered or rounded shape. The shape of the pom-pom differs depending on the shape of the tip of the crepe paper.
Step 4. Tie the crepe paper right in the middle
Take a piece of string, wire, or raffia string and use it to secure the crepe paper right in the middle. Make sure the crepe paper strap is long enough for the pom-poms to hang.
Step 5. Open the crepe paper sheets one by one with your fingers
Do it slowly so that the crepe paper does not tear. Don't worry if there are 1 or 2 small rips because they are not noticeable. You don't need to create it again from scratch.
Step 6. Hang the pom-poms for decoration
When you're done separating the sheets of crepe paper, hang the pom-poms using nails on the wall or tie them to a tree branch.
