Cowboy hats have a long history, both as a work accessory and as a style identity. Although it looks quite worn on the head, actually cowboy hats have rules that must be followed. You'll need to buy a hat that's the right size, shape it slightly, make sure the front is pointing forward, and tilt it slightly to give the look a little bit of feel.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Choosing a Hat
Step 1. Buy the right hat size
The first step to wearing a cowboy hat properly is to make sure the hat is the right size and fits your head. Cowboy hats should fit snugly on the head. If you want to buy a hat, know your hat size first, but also try on the hat before buying.
Step 2. Modify the hat you have for a better fit
If you already have a hat that is slightly larger but not so big that you need to buy a smaller hat, you can modify it. You can purchase a layer of foam made specifically for the hat to make it fit better. Depending on how much you need, and the shape of the head, you can put this foam around the hat, or put it slightly on the front and back, on both sides, just in front, or just at the back.
- Find out where the hat is loose on the head. If the entire hat is too low on the head when worn, you may need to apply adhesive foam around the hat.
- There should be a band around the inside of the hat that folds up and covers the foam layer. Then fold the ribbon back down before putting on the hat.
Step 3. Choose the right hat
There are many options when it comes to choosing a cowboy hat. The main material choices are flannel (which is made from beaver or rabbit fur), leather, and straw. Flannel hats are warmer so they tend to be worn in colder seasons. Straw hats are best worn to stay cool on hot days.
Step 4. Shape your hat
Most cowboy hats can be adjusted to a certain shape by bending and squeezing them gently. How to do it will depend on the material of the hat itself. The front and back edges of the cowboy hat should be fairly even. Bend the sides so that they rise slightly, but don't bend too tightly. You can also gently bend the sides of the top of the hat. You don't need any tools to do this. Just use your hands.
Method 2 of 2: Wearing a Hat on the Head
Step 1. Trim the hair
You need to make sure your hair doesn't get in the way of the hat so that it fits snugly against your head. If you have short hair, this is not necessary. For longer hair, it's a good idea to tuck your hair back to let it loose gently. Don't pile hair on top of your head. If you need to tie it up so it doesn't fall apart, a straight-down ponytail is a great choice.
Step 2. Place the tape on the back
One of the simplest rules is to make sure the hat is worn properly on the head, the front facing forward. Most cowboy hats have a small band on the inner lining around the head coat. The ribbon should be at the back of the head. If there is no ribbon on the hat, the general rule is that the hat should be narrower at the front.
Step 3. Tilt the brim of the hat
Positioning the hat in various styles can affect how you look. If you want to look relaxed and friendly, tilt the front of the hat slightly so that half of your forehead is visible. For a more serious, or almost mysterious look, lower the brim of the hat to just above the eyebrows. Tilt the hat slightly to the left or right will give the impression of confidence, as if you are chasing women or looking for trouble.
Step 4. Choose the right clothes
The simplest best options to wear with a cowboy hat are a button-down shirt, jeans, a nice pair of boots. Shirts can be plain or plaid. Flannel shirts can also be worn. You need to wear blue jeans that are simple and straight with no extra pockets on the side, no prints or extra buttons on the back pockets, no fading or staining. Just classic blue jeans.
- If you are going to wear a cowboy hat, boots are a must. It will look weird if you leave the house wearing sneakers.
- You should also tuck in a shirt and maybe wear a nice black or brown leather belt. A nice belt buckle can also be worn, if desired.
