Have you ever thought about becoming a fashion designer? Start with the basics. This article will teach you how to draw a standard top and dress. You can add any details you want!
Step
Step 1. Play some music if it helps you think or watch a fashion program to help determine what style you want
You can also read fashion magazines (Chatelaine, Elle, and Cosmopolitan) for ideas.
Step 2. Gather the tools and decide whether you want to draw a sleeveless, long sleeve, short sleeve, shoulder strap, strapless shirt, or sleeves (long sleeves and strapless shirts are simple choices)
Step 3. Use lined paper so you have guidelines and can maintain proportions
Next, you can draw a sketch on plain paper.
Step 4. Start sketching the shoulders
It doesn't have to be great--you can come back and fix it later. Right now, your goal is to draw the idea on paper. Details can be added later.
Step 5. Draw a curved line
This is the top of the top/dress.
Step 6. Draw two straight lines down from the edges
Step 7. Draw down towards the waist and make an inward curved line to show the model has a body shape
Make clothes that follow the shape of the body. Clothes that fit are more attractive than clothes that stick like a sack. However, you can still draw loose clothes like sacks if you want
Step 8. Draw the bottom of the top/dress in whatever shape you want
You can make it long or short, lacy or plain, wrinkled or unwrinkled, angular or straight.
Tips
- Pay attention to original clothes and fashion sketches. Notice how the clothes wave and bend, how the clothes fall on the body. Greek clothing is an example of clothing with intricate and beautiful pleats. Other types of clothing may only slightly adhere to the skin or shape the wearer's body.
- Think creatively! Creativity and things you love will inspire others and match your style.
- Cute accessories can beautify simple clothes, but they can't cover ugly clothes. Try designing a belt to fit more around the waist or tights under a short skirt.
- You can make clothes that you have drawn. Go to a fabric store or hobby shop. Look at fabrics and designs from books that contain other patterns and ideas.
- Be open to new ideas. Read fashion magazines and watch fashion shows online.
- After you finish the sketch, redraw it on plain paper and add details.
- Don't be afraid to be wrong; people often make mistakes the first time they try.
- Unless you're actually going to sew the shirt you're drawing, you don't have to worry about how to make your drawing happen.
- Draw the full body.
Warning
- You might mess up this process. Try and try again! You will become more and more skilled.
- Never copy someone else's design! Create an authentic design!
- Use a pencil and eraser. Don't use a ballpoint pen!
