Knitted and lace sweaters usually stretch, but you don't have to be upset because a sweater can almost always return to its original size
You can repair the entire sweater or just a specific area using a variety of methods. Once it's back to its original size, there are lots of things you can do to prevent it from shrinking in the future!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Shrink an Entire Sweater
Step 1. Decide on the parts you want to shrink
You'll only need to soak the sweater in its entirety if you want to wrinkle all the pieces. Sometimes, this is not necessary. Maybe the sweater just stretches around the neck or arms. In this case, you can shrink it by hand.
Step 2. Wet the sweater and remove the excess water
Fill the tub with warm water. Put in the sweater until it's completely wet. Remove the sweater from the water. Press to remove excess water and throw the water into the sink. Do not wring or wring the sweater as this may cause damage.
Step 3. Rearrange the shape of the sweater
Place the sweater between the towels. Turn the sweater into the shape you want by hand. Let the sweater dry.
Step 4. Dry carefully
Don't hang the sweater. If hung, the shoulders of the sweater will stick out and stick out. It's better if you clamp the sweater on the towel you are using. Place in a safe place to dry. Keep out of reach of children and pets as it is best not to touch the sweater during the drying process.
Step 5. Wet the sweater
If you want to change the shape of the entire sweater, you need to go a little more extreme. Start by wetting the sweater in lukewarm water. The amount of water affects how much the sweater will shrivel. If you want the sweater to be really small, soak the sweater completely before drying it. If you just want the sweater to shrink slightly, simply spray the sweater until it's damp.
Step 6. Put the sweater in the dryer
If you want to crease the whole sweater, you can put it in the dryer. After wetting the sweater, put it in the dryer on a high temperature. Use the highest temperature especially if you want to shrink the sweater significantly. Keep it on until the sweater is completely dry. Your sweater will shrink a few numbers.
Method 2 of 3: Shrink Certain Parts
Step 1. Prepare a basin of water
You can wrinkle certain areas, such as the neck or arms, if these are the only areas that stretch. Make sure you test for hidden spots on the sweater as boiling water or the drying process can change the color of the sweater. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to a boil then pour the water into a basin.
Step 2. Moisturize the area you want to shrink
You can dip the sleeve, wrist, or neck of the sweater in the water. Wear protective gloves if the water is still smoky. Don't burn your hands while doing this.
Step 3. Rearrange the shape of the sweater
Using your fingers, pinch and gently press the part you want to crease. Keep doing this until the sweater is the shape and size you want.
- If you change the wrist of the sweater sleeve, hold it close to your chest as you do so. Sweater wrists are usually small. You'll be able to see it better if you hold it close to your body. When handling larger areas, such as the neck, lay the sweater on a flat surface.
- If your sweater is very wet, arrange the shape on the towel so that the water droplets catch on the towel.
Step 4. Dry with a hairdryer
Once you've rearranged the shape of the sweater, grab a hairdryer and dry the sweater. The warm air and water work together to reshape the sweater so that the sweater returns to its original size.
This method requires hot air. So, don't use the cold air setting on the hairdryer. Start with warm temperatures. If the sweater doesn't dry too, use a high temperature
Method 3 of 3: Prevent Sweater Stretch
Step 1. Fold the sweater, do not hang it
Fold the sweater and store it in a drawer. Don't hang the sweater. Hanging will make certain parts stretch. Hanging can also make the shoulders stick out. If possible, it's better to fold the sweater than hang it.
Step 2. Be careful if you do have to hang the sweater
If you must hang a sweater, take precautions. Use thick hangers with extra layers that can provide more support. You may be able to fold the sweater and hang it on the bottom of the hanger. The bottom of the hanger can provide more support so the sweater does not stretch.
You can cut a sheet of paper towel and use it to line the bottom of the hanger. This can prevent wrinkles from forming
Step 3. Wash the sweater by hand
If possible, wash the sweater by hand. Use cold water and a small amount of fabric softener and detergent. Rinse thoroughly and make sure there is no detergent residue. While removing excess water before drying, press down on the sweater. Do not squeeze or squeeze it. Fold the sweater in half and hang it on the bottom bar of the hanger on the drying rack.
