Cutting a man's hair is usually a simple activity if you pay attention to the method and take the time. You can use scissors, an electric shaver, or a combination of the two. Ask the guy how short and how much he would like his hair cut, and what kind of hairstyle he would like. You have to be confident and trust your instincts. Practice is the best way to hone your skills!
Step
Part 1 of 4: Getting Ready
Step 1. Ask her what hairstyle she wants
Ask her how short she wants her hair to be cut and what kind of hairstyle she wants. He may only ask you to cut the ends of his hair, or he may cut the back of his hair short but keep the top long. He may also ask you to shave off all his hair. Before you start cutting, it's important that you understand what he wants with his hair. If you understand and talk about it from the start, you will avoid any possible misunderstandings.
- When cutting a man's hair, separate his hair into seven sections: the top, left, right, back, left side near the ear, right side near the ear and the side. That way, the guy can explain to you how much hair he wants to cut in each section.
- Keep chatting. When you cut a guy's hair, keep asking for his opinion. Give her a mirror (that hangs on the wall or one that can be held) so she can give her opinion on the cut, and occasionally ask her if her haircut is short enough.
Step 2. Choose a hairstyle that matches the man's face and the thickness of the hair on his head
A man experiencing hair loss may like a hairstyle like “Don Draper”, but may be disappointed if he finds that his haircut remains the same as before.
- Men's hairstyles will look even more dramatic if they have thick hair.
- The more conservative a man's hairstyle, the better if the hair is thinned.
Step 3. Make sure that you have plenty of time
It is important not to rush when cutting hair, especially if you are inexperienced. You also shouldn't be distracted by anything around you. Don't let your inability to concentrate make your hands shake or get distracted.
Step 4. Prepare the work area
Have the man sit in a movable chair, and make sure that you can comfortably reach his head with your hands. Cover her shoulders with a cloth, a piece of cloth, or a towel, so she doesn't get bits of hair and makes it easier to clean. Place a piece of cloth around his neck and secure it with safety pins or tongs to keep it from falling. Cover the neck as tightly as possible.
- Make sure that the floor surface is easy to clean after cutting. Ceramic, wood, linolium, and asphalt floors are great choices. Carpets, especially heavy rugs, will drown out the haircut and make it difficult to clean. Bathrooms, kitchens, and front porches are all good places to get a haircut.
- Use sharp scissors specially made for cutting hair. Scissors used to cut paper or fabric will not produce the desired haircut.
Step 5. Always start with clean hair
If you use an electric shaver, start with a dry section of hair. Wet hair by spraying water using a spray bottle. If the hair is too wet to cut, dry it gently with a towel.
Step 6. Comb the man's hair with a comb, so it doesn't tangle
This will give you an idea of how and where to cut your hair. Comb your hair according to the desired hair style/model. Some men prefer parting their hair on the right side of their head, while others prefer parting their hair in the middle of their head.
Part 2 of 4: Cutting Hair with a Shaver
Step 1. Choose a shaver with the right tip shape
You can use the shaver to trim the hair on the back and sides of your head, to trim some of the hair around your ears, or even shave all your hair the same length. The longer the tip of the shaver, the less hair will be cut. Most shavers come with six different types of ends. The smaller the number, the shorter the result will be:
- Use number six to cut the hair a bit shorter.
- Use numbers three or four for a classic cut.
- Use number two for very short hair, and number one for shaving "most hair".
Step 2. Hold the shaver tightly between your thumb and forefinger and middle finger
Your grip should be firm and firm, but still comfortable. You don't need to squeeze or do anything weird with this shaver, as this is dangerous and can hurt someone.
Step 3. Start by cutting the hair at the bottom of the head
Hold the shaver with a slight pressure against the head, and run from the neck to the half of the head. Turn the shaver and lift it away from the hair to stop cutting. Cut in a circular direction to the side, always cutting up and against the direction of hair growth.
Gently cut the hair around the head
Step 4. Carefully cut around the part near the ear
To tidy up the back, the goal is to leave any remaining hair behind, and trim any excess hair around the hairline. Turn the clipper in the opposite direction and press the razor blade perpendicular to the head and cut the hair downwards. Make sure that the center is cut off as well. The cutter must ask the person who is being cut hair to lower his head, to make cutting easier, then raise his head again to see the results.
Step 5. Cut the hair on the side
The sides are harder than the back, but the goal is to tidy up the sides and near the ears. Turn on the shaver nearby and use the tip of the knife, cutting from back to front, against the direction of hair growth. Try to tilt the razor towards the inner corner.
Part 3 of 4: Cutting the Top Hair and Bangs
Step 1. Wet the hair on the top of the man's head, and comb the hair forward
Use a spray bottle to slightly dampen uncut hair. Comb the hair forward and make a straight line in the middle of the head, directly proportional to the midpoint between the eyes separating the left and right sections.
Step 2. Trim the top hair
Start at the back and cut towards the front in the direction of the growth, and pick up a section of hair with a 1.5 cm wide comb. Pinch with your index and middle fingers, then slide up or down to the length you want. The hair under your fingers will remain on your head, while the hair above your fingers will be clipped off. Cut the hair with hair cutting scissors, so that the results remain even and do not look weird.
- Cut perpendicular to the direction of the hair for good cutting results. For example, if his hair grows downward, toward the back of his neck (vertical), cut it horizontally at the back of his head.
- Don't cut your hair in one big pin at a time using the entire length of the scissor blade. Use the tip of the scissors to trim the ends of the hair. If you're nervous, cut it a little at a time. If necessary, you can always cut again.
Step 3. After cutting the entire section of hair, comb the hair back towards the front and start at the front of the head
You should pay attention to the difference in the length of the hair you just cut. When cutting a new section of hair, always take a section of hair you just cut between your fingers as a guide to equalize the length.
Step 4. Join the hair at the top of the head
Cut the section along the line. Use the previously cut length of hair as a guide, then draw another “line” to the right or left of the original section. Start cutting, keeping the direction from the back of the head to the front. Use the previously cut section of hair as a sizing guide and trim any hair that exceeds the length of the hair in the guide. Continue to separate and cut your hair from front to back, always taking some of the previously cut hair as a guide for how long to cut.
Step 5. Trim the bangs
When you get to the front of your head, brush the bangs down. Hold the scissor vertically with the tip pointing down, cutting a bit using the tip of the scissor. Cut at an angle for better results.
- Be careful when trimming the bangs. The most important principle is this: once you cut, the hair is gone. Always remember that you can keep cutting, but you can't reconnect hair that has already been cut. Then you have to make sure how long you cut.
- Make sure that the bangs are wet, but you will need to dry them later. Cutting dry hair will result in loose hair, and in some cases can give bad results. It's also worth noting that curly hair can shrink about 12 cm in length when it is dry, while straight hair can shrink by about 4.5 cm. If you've never cut bangs before, be careful not to make a mistake
Part 4 of 4: Styling the Hair and Finishing the Cut
Step 1. Combine the use of a hair clipper with a shaver
Use the tip of the comb, and comb the hair forward until the point where the cut with the shaver and the cut with the scissors meet. Use the scissors to trim any hair that's still popping out of the comb, trimming its shape or removing any uneven lines that separate the shaver cut from the clipper cut. Do this for the entire hair.
When you use the comb, hold it with the tip of the comb pointing up, and make sure that you don't hold the comb out of your sight
Step 2. Cut the hair near the neck and sides
Use a shaver without additional tools, cut the hair near the neck and hair around the ears. Trim the sides, making sure that your cuts are even. Start at the top and work your shaver downwards so you don't shave too high.
If a guy asks you to trim his beard, you can use a shaver to shave or clean the hair under the sides. If you're shaving, you can use a razor (to create a neater look) or an unattached shaver (to create a coarser shave). If you're shaving your beard, ask the guy how short he'd like his beard shaved, and choose an appropriate shaving tip shape. You can always use scissors to slightly flatten the longest part of his beard
Step 3. Comb your hair when you're done cutting it
Look at the shape of the hair again to make sure you haven't missed any sections. Carefully trim each section of hair with scissors or a razor. Let the guy look at your cut in the mirror, and ask him if he likes the cut or not. You can always cut certain parts again if needed. Also give the finishing touch after cutting.
Step 4. Wash or wet the hair again, to clean up any remaining hair pieces
Gently wipe the man's hair and neck with a towel. You can use a little blow of the blow dryer to the neck to remove any bits of hair that are still stuck. Add hair styling products, if she wants.
Step 5. Sweep the floor before you let him get up from his seat
Take a little time to sweep up all the haircuts and throw them in the trash. Wash the combs/scissors/shaving tools you use.
- If the man is not wearing shoes, the haircut can get into his socks. Sometimes there is a sharp haircut, that is, hair that grows in the opposite direction. This can cause pain in the legs.
- If he wears shoes, pieces of hair can stick to the soles of his shoes, and get carried into his house.
Tips
- The next time you visit a barbershop, take the time to observe, and maybe take notes, while a hairdresser is cutting a man's hair. This is the best way of learning.
- After his hair is cut, it is better for a man to clean his body by taking a bath. Bathing should be done before he leaves, to clean the neck, ears, and other body parts of all the small haircuts.
- Follow suggestions from your favorite hairstyle magazine.
