Step
Part 1 of 3: Trimming the Bangs
Step 1. Tie your hair back with a rubber hair tie
Leave your bangs in front and comb flat. Make sure that every part of your bangs is free of hair tie.
Step 2. Decide how short you want your bangs to be
Pinch and slide your index and middle fingers to the point as far as you want to cut and use them as your guide when cutting.
Step 3. Trim your bangs at a 45 degree angle
Start trimming from the center of your bangs and then work your way to the ends.
If you're not sure how long you're going to trim it, always start cutting by leaving your bangs a little longer. If you don't like it, you can always trim it back and make it shorter later
Step 4. Make it slightly oval
The cut is blunt, straight across the bangs and should be slightly shorter in the middle and slightly longer at the ends. Similarly, side swept bangs style, should be shorter on one side with the other side longer.
Step 5. Clean any remaining hair
Use a make-up brush or kitchen paper to clean hair from your face and clothes, and sweep up any strands that may fall onto the floor.
Part 2 of 3: Trimming the Split Ends
Step 1. Wet your hair
The best way to trim split ends is when your hair is wet so you can create a more balanced cut. Use conditioner in the shower to help remove frizz.
Step 2. Comb your hair horizontally
Be sure to remove any tangles before starting trimming.
Step 3. Divide your hair into two sections
Tie one section with a hair tie, and start cutting on the other side.
Step 4. Cut your hair in divisions every 5 cm
Pin the hair and bring/slide your index and middle fingers to the bottom of each section and use your dominant hand to cut as long as you want from each 5cm division.
Step 5. Cut at a slight angle
If you want to make it tapered and natural looking, then hold your scissors at a slight angle. If you want a more blunt and dramatic look, then cut it horizontally.
Step 6. Repeat for the other side
Before cutting, comb both sides of your hair to determine how short you should cut it.
Step 7. Make sure that both sides of the cut are balanced
It's inevitable that one side may be slightly shorter than the other, so check in the mirror a few times to make sure you've made an even cut.
Use a hand mirror to examine the back of your hair and make sure that you have trimmed with a balanced cut line
Step 8. Trim any tucked hair
Comb your hair back and trim any stray hairs that may have missed the first time.
Part 3 of 3: Trimming Layers
Step 1. Wet your hair
Trimming your hair while it's wet will help ensure you can create a balanced cut and make it easier to cut every section of your hair and nothing is missed/tucked away.
Or you can blow dry your hair and style it as usual. Cutting your hair while your hair is styled can help you determine where the layers of your hair are and decide how short you want the layers to be cut later. This may be especially helpful if it's your first time cutting your own hair
Step 2. Divide your hair into top and bottom sections
Secure the top with bobby pins or a large rubber hair tie.
Step 3. Cut your hair in 5 cm divisions
Comb each section and then use your index and middle fingers down each section of hair to use as a guide. Cut each piece at a slight angle to create a tapered look.
If you are unsure of the length of the piece, always cut the longer part first. You can always go back and cut some more length later if it doesn't fit
Step 4. Tie the bottom of your hair and remove the top
Let your hair fall and frame your face as usual.
Step 5. Trim these layers in 5 cm sections
Hold your scissors at a vertical angle to create the appearance of a tapered cut. Layers should be shorter on the inside (near your face) and longer on the outside.
Step 6. Comb all the hair all over your head and check to make sure that these layers are evenly trimmed
If needed you can make additional cuts to your hair.
Tips
- Prepare a high quality scissors to cut the hair with the best results. Blunt scissors will make it difficult for you to make oblique cuts.
- Protect your clothes from small pieces of hair by wrapping your shoulders in a towel or by wearing an old t-shirt. Sweep your work area when you are done.
- You can ask someone to help you cut the back of your hair and make sure it has a balanced cut.
