Coloring your hair is not an easy decision to make, especially when you have to consider the many harsh chemicals in salon paints or at-home dyes. Luckily, you can darken your hair naturally with coffee. This method is considered ideal, especially for pregnant women and people who want to use non-permanent dyes. All you need is coffee and conditioner!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Coloring Hair with Coffee and Conditioner
Step 1. Brew the coffee first
Brew 250-500 milliliters of organic coffee. Make sure you use organic coffee because non-organic coffee usually contains added chemicals and preservatives. In addition, also use black coffee that has been roasted or espresso. This way, the hair color will be darker. Make a strong brew by adding a little more coffee than the previously mentioned dosing instructions.
- You can brew coffee in any way (eg using a coffee machine or brewing it on the stove). However, brewing coffee for one instant serving using a machine is unlikely to produce a strong enough brew to color your hair.
- Cool the coffee first and use the coffee after it has cooled down (or, at least, is warm).
Step 2. Mix coffee with conditioner
You can use any conditioner to mix with your coffee. However, a thicker conditioner will make it easier to apply the mixture to your hair. Mix 250 milliliters of brewed coffee with 2 tablespoons of conditioner and 2 tablespoons of ground organic coffee. Use a spoon to mix the ingredients until evenly distributed.
If you have long hair, you can increase the amount of coffee and conditioner you use. The dosing of the ingredients described above is not a fixed rule to follow, but it can be a guide for you to determine the dose based on the length of your hair
Step 3. Apply the mixture on the hair
Use your hands to apply the mixture to your hair, and try using a wide-toothed comb to even out the mixture. Once you've applied the mixture all over your hair, curl it up and hold it with bobby pins to keep it away from your face while the mixture is allowed to soak into your hair. After that, let stand for (at least) one hour. After an hour, the conditioner will begin to dry and harden.
- Apply the coffee mixture to your hair in the shower and in front of the mirror so you can collect and clean the mixture that drips on the floor, and easily see the results of your work.
- Make sure you cover your shoulders with a dirty towel (which can stain). This way, the drippings of the coffee mixture won't hit the clothes and contaminate the fabric.
Step 4. Rinse your hair
Clean your hair from the coffee and conditioner mixture under the shower. You don't need to wash your hair with shampoo; just rinse hair with water until clean.
You may need to repeat the dyeing process several times until you get the hair color you want
Method 2 of 2: Dyeing Hair Using a Coffee Rinse
Step 1. Wash with shampoo
First of all, wash your hair with shampoo. Make sure your hair is clean of oil and hair care products before dyeing it with coffee.
Step 2. Brew the coffee
As in the previous method, brew 500 milliliters of strong organic coffee. This brewing will help you because later the coffee mixture will be splashed on the hair as a "dye" rinse. The more coffee blends you have, the easier it will be for you to pour (and color) your hair.
Allow the coffee to cool until it reaches room temperature (or colder)
Step 3. Transfer the coffee to a large container
After the coffee is brewed, pour the coffee into a large bowl or container. Basically, you need a container big enough to hold the coffee so you can scoop it out to splash your hair. In addition, with a large container you can tilt your head towards the container and pour the coffee so that the rinsed coffee will fall back and be accommodated in the container.
Step 4. Rinse hair with a coffee rinse
Place a large bowl or container in the shower box or tilt your head over the bowl. You can "dip" your head into the bowl or use a small bowl to scoop up the coffee and pour it over your hair. Using a small bowl is more effective because you can reach the hair at the back of your head. Coloring your hair evenly will be more difficult if you have to dip your head in the bowl. Rinse hair with coffee 15 times. This is done to make sure your hair is completely wet with the coffee. After that, squeeze the hair to remove the coffee mixture that is still stuck and let your hair sit for (at least) 20 minutes to a few hours. It's a good idea to curl your hair and hold it with bobby pins so that the coffee rinse doesn't drip and contaminate the area around you.
Alternatively, you can pour the coffee mixture into a spray bottle and spray the mixture on your hair. Regardless of the application method you follow, make sure you wet as much of your hair as possible with coffee
Step 5. Rinse hair thoroughly
After leaving, rinse hair with clean water.
- You may need to tint several times to get the color you want.
- Try rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar to make the color last longer.
Tips
- Cover your neck and shoulders with a towel so the coffee mixture doesn't get on your clothes.
- This hair coloring process works more effectively for light brown hair than blonde hair.
