Using dye or bleach (bleaching) to lighten your hair a bit can dry out or even damage your hair. On the other hand, honey has been known for centuries to restore the natural moisture and balance of hair while also providing a hint of lightness. Learn how to dye your hair with honey and use it as a conditioner in these following ways to maintain the look of your light-colored hair.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Treatment to Make Hair Lighter Using Honey
Step 1. Make a dye mixture
Since honey is very sticky, it's a good idea to add a little water to thin it out and make it easier to work on your hair. Mix four parts honey and one part water or apple cider vinegar (which also acts as a conditioner) in a bowl until thoroughly combined.
- If you want a more drastic color change, you can add some hydrogen peroxide bottle caps to the mix. This ingredient will react with your hair to bleach it to a lighter degree. Don't use hydrogen peroxide if your hair is black or very dark brown, as it can turn your hair orange.
- For a auburn hue, add some powdered henna, cinnamon, or coffee grounds to the mixture. Adding hibiscus petals can also add a strawberry-like reddish-blonde hue.
Step 2. Let the mixture sit for about 30-60 minutes
Step 3. Apply the honey mixture to your hair
Place a towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes, then pour a small amount of the honey mixture over your head and use your fingers to massage it into your scalp. Continue to apply honey to your hair until all of your hair is completely wet with the honey mixture.
- You may need to cover the bathroom floor with a towel or washcloth to protect it from dripping honey, as sticky honey will be quite difficult to clean.
- If you add the powdered rouge to the honey, don't wear clothes or towels that will be obvious if there is a red stain.
Step 4. Cover your hair with plastic and let it sit
Use a shower cap or some plastic wrap to cover your hair. Leave the honey on your hair for at least 2 hours for a lighter color.
- If you have long hair that is difficult to put in a shower cap or plastic, roll it up and pin it up while the coloring process is in progress, then cover with a shower cap.
- Do not use metal hair clips if you add hydrogen peroxide to the honey mixture.
- There is no need to use a hair dryer to heat the hair. Honey works well at room temperature.
Step 5. Leave the honey on overnight to get a brighter color
Honey will also be useful as an intensive conditioning treatment if left for that long. Be sure to wear a shower cap and cover the pillow with a towel.
Do not leave the honey overnight if you add hydrogen peroxide to this mixture
Step 6. Clean the honey from your hair
Rinse with warm water, then shampoo and use conditioner as usual. Pat your hair dry with a towel, and allow to air dry or blow with a hairdryer. Your hair will now have a honey-like hue.
Method 2 of 2: Honey Conditioner for Color Maintenance
Step 1. Mix 60 ml of honey and 120 ml of conditioner
You can use any conditioner you like, as long as the scent mixes well with the honey. Stir the conditioner and honey in a bowl until smooth.
- If there is more, store the rest of the conditioner mixture in a clean conditioner bottle for later use.
- Use the same ratio of honey and conditioner to make this mixture on a large scale.
Step 2. Use this conditioner after every shampoo
After you've shampooed your hair, apply honey conditioner as you normally would with your regular conditioner. Take a small amount of conditioner and apply it thoroughly to your hair. Rinse when finished.
- Leave this conditioner on your hair for 5-10 minutes while you finish your shower for a stronger lightening effect.
- If your hair feels sticky after rinsing, reduce the amount of honey you use next and increase the amount of conditioner.
Step 3. Reduce the amount of honey if your hair feels limp
If your hair still feels limp after rinsing, try increasing the amount of your regular conditioner and reducing the amount of honey in the mixture. Be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly before stepping out of the shower.
Tips
- If you don't have a shower cap you can use a plastic bag and tie it around your head. It won't look too great, but at least it works!
- Adding cinnamon will give your hair a reddish tint, and lemon juice will lighten your hair faster.
- Adding a little lemon juice to the mixture can shorten the time it takes to see bigger changes.
- For people with dark hair like black, it may take a while for you to get the hair color you want. But as long as you have time, carry on!
- There are other natural ingredients you can add to honey to enhance the coloring. Two of these ingredients include lemon juice or lemon juice and cinnamon which are commonly used in the kitchen. (Warning: cinnamon can cause a "hot," "hot," or "burning" sensation on your scalp. It won't cause scalp burns, but can be very uncomfortable for some people.)
- Honey won't damage your hair like peroxide and bleach, but it will take longer to lighten your hair color. If the bleach only requires one use, then the honey takes up to 10-15 times of use.
- Before the results are visible, it may take several uses, but this natural remedy is safe for repeated use, unlike bleach or dyes.
- Do not be discouraged if you do not see results after the first use; several uses may be required.
- Honey will work well on brown or blonde hair.
- You can also add vitamin C to the mixture to make the process go faster.
- For some people, using honey to color the hair may not show immediate results the first time you use it.
- If you don't want to use a towel to cover the floor and make it sticky, you can use a large torn plastic bag and use it to cover the area where you applied the honey.
- Make sure you rinse the honey clean and thoroughly.
- Repeat the application process as many times as needed to get the desired color.
