Although gray hair color is now commonplace, permanent silver hair color is becoming a new fashion trend among young people today. Hair style, also known as granny hair (grandmother's hair) is widely chosen by both men and women. While silver is hard to get by painting it yourself, with the right combination of lightening, toner, and paint products, you can have this cool hairstyle.

Part 1 of 3: Making sure your hair is ready to be dyed
Step 1. Do not dye your hair for several months
You will need to lighten your hair until it is very light in order to achieve a gray color, unless your hair color is currently platinum. Using this much bleach will seriously damage your hair, so it should be as healthy as possible. If you recently lightened your hair or applied permanent dye, avoid further chemical processing for three months.
- If you have very light hair, skip this step and dye your hair straight away.
- Your hair doesn't have to be platinum blonde to be gray. If the hair color has been lightened, painting can begin.
Step 2. Let your hair grow
When lightening dark hair to platinum blonde, the hair is bound to suffer damage. Since your hair will be dry and damaged during lightening, it may be necessary to shorten the ends when you are done. Make sure you set aside 1-2 cm of hair that can be trimmed.
Step 3. Choose the right paint
There are many paint choices that you can take. Do you want a bright silver or gunmetal gray color? Neutral gray or quirky silver with a hint of blue? Read reviews of hair color in magazines or blogs and imagine the color in your hair. Choose the one you like the most.
For added permanent paint, semi-permanent paints and certain hair toners in pale purples and blues will also create platinum grays. However, keep in mind that this paint only lasts a few weeks. Fortunately, this product is so light maintenance that it can be reused without waiting
Step 4. Purchase your ingredients while you wait
While silver hair is in vogue, this color is hard to find in salons or beauty stores. You will most likely have to buy it on the internet. Remember, shipping the goods will take a few days so plan well. In addition to hair dye, you will also need a deep conditioner, a hair lightening kit, and a purple toner.
Step 5. Condition hair a week before bleaching
Permanent hair dyes and (especially) hair lighteners will dry your hair by stripping the natural oils from your hair. To minimize damage, hair needs to be moisturized as best as possible using a deep conditioner.
- Guidelines for using hair conditioner may vary. Check product packaging for details. In general, you will apply a small amount of conditioner to clean your hair and massage it like you are using shampoo. Put on a shower cap and let it sit for 10-30 minutes before rinsing it off. Let your hair dry afterwards.
- Semi-permanent paints and most toners don't dry out your hair very much. These products do not penetrate the outermost layer of hair and only attach pigment to the hair surface.
Part 2 of 3: Brighten Hair
Step 1. Wait a day or two after using the last shampoo
Do not bleach freshly washed hair. The hair lightening process will dry out drastically, potentially damaging and causing your hair to break. The hair's natural oils will prevent that from happening. A freshly washed scalp is also more sensitive and feels very itchy during hair lightening.
Step 2. Mix the lightening powder with the developer
Your brightening kit will have two main components: a dry lightening powder and a hydrogen peroxide solution. Mix the two in a balanced ratio using a special brush called a tint brush or a plastic spoon.
- Follow the instructions on the package if the components are different from those described in this article.
- Developers are available in several power levels as measured by “volume”. If your hair color is light enough, use volume 10. Use volume 20 for slightly darker blondes, volume 30 for light browns, and volume 40 for blacks and dark browns.
Step 3. Perform a strand test
If you've never lightened your hair to platinum blonde before, you need to know how long it will take to lighten your hair. Divide a strand of hair near the roots from an inconspicuous location and secure it with an elastic band. Apply some of the brightener with a small brush. Let stand and check every 5-10 minutes.
If the hair is not bright enough after an hour, it will need to be lightened several times. Rinse off the brightener at the end of the session and give it back. To minimize breakage, do not leave the bleach on for more than an hour
Step 4. Apply the brightener
Use a tint brush to evenly distribute the lightening mixture through your hair. Work in sections, sweeping the light in the direction your hair is growing.
- Start with the hair at the back of your head and work your way up to the front so that you're left with the section of hair that makes up your face at the end.
- If your hair is thick, flip each section of hair to reveal the layer of hair behind it and apply some light there too.
- Leave about 1 cm of hair near the roots for the final work. The heat from the scalp will cause the bleach near the roots to dry faster than usual.
- Try to do this as quickly as possible to make sure the color is evenly distributed.
Step 5. Let the lightening product sit on your hair
Use the strand test results to determine how long the bleach needs to be left in the hair. Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a shower cap while you wait. Keep in mind, a slight itching on the scalp is normal.
Step 6. Rinse off the hair lightener
Use warm water without shampoo. Be careful not to get the brightener in your eyes. If possible, have someone else rinse your hair in a sink, such as at a salon.
If you're not in a hurry to move on to the next step, let your hair down. A blow dryer will strip your hair of moisture, potentially exacerbating the damage caused by the bleach
Part 3 of 3: Getting the Perfect Grey
Step 1. Apply a layer of petroleum jelly on your hairline and face
While the toner will go away on its own, you don't want a purple tint to frame your face for a few weeks. Take some petroleum jelly or thick moisturizer with your index finger and apply it all over the skin that normally touches your hair. Don't forget the ears! The petroleum jelly will prevent the paint from being absorbed into the skin.
If you didn't lighten your hair right away, don't forget that you shouldn't wash your hair. The dye will hold up better on dirty hair than clean hair
Step 2. Start with the purple toner
Once lightened, the hair is (should be) a pale yellow color. Since purple is the opposite color of yellow on the color wheel, purple toner balances out the yellow in your hair. The end result will be a neutral white and ready to be colored gray.
- Wear gloves when applying toner so your hands don't get dirty.
- Start with damp hair. If you don't do the lightening step, wet your hair with warm water.
- Dip the tint brush into the toner. If the toner comes in a bottle, pour it into the bowl first.
- Apply toner starting from the roots to the ends of the hair.
- Start with the hair at the back of your head and work your way forward.
- Make sure the toner covers all of your hair evenly. If you have thick hair, clip the toner-coated hair to the side to work the layer underneath.
Step 3. Leave the toner on for 20 minutes
You don't have to cover your hair, but wear a shower cap or plastic wrap so you don't get on your clothes or furniture. After 20 minutes, rinse off the toner with warm water. Wrap hair in a towel and absorb excess water.
- If you are using permanent hair dye, let your hair dry first.
- If you use semi-permanent paint, apply it while your hair is still wet.
Step 4. Apply hair dye
Reapply the petroleum jelly first when it is clean when rinsing the toner. Use a tint brush to paint gray hair in the same way as toner. At this stage, you have to be careful that the color is even.

Step 5. Let the paint sit for about 30 minutes before rinsing off
Run warm water through your hair until the stream is clear. Use a showerhead because that way, the hair dye won't contaminate your skin. There's no need to shampoo (because it can fade the color of the paint), but you should still use conditioner.
Don't forget, each brand of hair dye uses different methods. Always check the instructions for use on the packaging first

- Before applying any product to hair, always check for potential allergies. If you have allergies, read the product label to make sure the product doesn't contain an ingredient that causes your allergy. If not, try applying a small amount of the product to areas of skin that are normally covered, such as your back. Leave it on the skin for how long the product will sit in the hair. Rinse and look for signs of an allergic reaction, such as redness or itching. Check periodically for 24 hours, because sometimes the reaction comes too late.
- Do not use a metal bowl when mixing bleach and developer, as the bowl will rust.
- Wear old clothes when lightening and dyeing hair.
- Use shampoo, conditioner, and color-preserving spray to make the paint color last longer.
- The hair dye used for the lightening strand test will give a more accurate picture of the hair dye color results
