If you want to cover gray hair with coffee, there are several methods you can try. Dip your hair into a freshly brewed black coffee after the coffee has cooled to color all the gray hair, or mix the coffee with conditioner and let the mixture sit on your hair while the coffee colors the gray hair. For a more "strong" method, use henna exposed from coffee. Whichever method you choose, understand that you may need to do this treatment more than once until your gray hair is completely dark.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Dipping Hair in Coffee
Step 1. Brew 1-2 pots of strong black coffee
After placing the filter in the coffee maker, take the ground coffee out of the container and put it in the filter. Fill the machine with water and follow the machine's instructions for brewing coffee.
- If you don't have a coffee maker, you can make coffee by boiling water and putting the coffee in the water.
- 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 grams) of coffee are needed to make 240 ml of coffee.
- Use your favorite brand of black coffee to color your hair.
Step 2. Let the coffee steep for 15 minutes in a large bowl or bucket
Allow the coffee to cool down to prevent your hair and scalp from burning when you dip your hair in the coffee. Once the coffee has cooled, pour the coffee into a bowl, bucket, or container large enough for your head to allow the coffee to hit the roots of your hair.
Set a timer for 15 minutes to cool the coffee before you can use it
Step 3. Dip your hair in coffee and let it sit for a few minutes
Tilt your head in front of the bowl and dip the gray hair (per section of hair) you want darkened into the coffee. Once the hair is in the coffee, hold the position for at least 3 minutes so that the coffee color is absorbed by the hair. Keep in mind that dipping brown or black hair in coffee to fix the root color of gray hair will make the rest of your hair darker. Meanwhile, if you have blonde hair, you can get even more drastic results when you dip your hair in coffee to fix the color at the gray roots.
- Cover your neck with a towel and wear an old T-shirt in case the coffee gets on your clothes or skin.
- If you only want to dye certain sections of your hair, secure the rest of your hair with bobby pins or a hair tie to keep that area from getting coffee.
Step 4. Remove coffee from hair using cold running water
Lift your head slowly from the coffee. If you have long hair, twist it at the front of your head so the coffee doesn't drip anywhere. Rinse your hair to remove any excess coffee while massaging it under cold running water to make sure all the coffee residue is removed. The rinsing process is complete when the rinse water appears clear.
Step 5. Repeat the process to make the hair appear darker
If your gray hair isn't as dark as you'd like it to be after the first dye, repeat the process of soaking your hair in coffee. The more often you soak your hair, the darker the gray.
Method 2 of 3: Making Coffee Conditioner
Step 1. Mix 2 packs of instant coffee with 240 ml of conditioner
It doesn't matter if your measurements are inaccurate because coffee conditioner recipes are very versatile. Pour the coffee and conditioner into a bowl.
If you don't have instant coffee, use 3-4 tablespoons (45-60 grams) of ground coffee
Step 2. Stir the two ingredients until the coffee is evenly mixed
Use a spoon to mix the coffee with the conditioner. Stir until the coffee is evenly mixed with the conditioner and the color of the conditioner turns brown.
Don't worry if the ground coffee is still clearly visible in the conditioner
Step 3. Cover your shoulders with a towel to prevent coffee stains on your clothes
Use a towel you don't mind getting stained. It's also a good idea to wear an old t-shirt that you don't mind getting dirty.
Step 4. Coat the gray hair with conditioner using an application brush
Take a small amount of coffee conditioner using a brush. Spread the conditioner over each section of gray hair so that the entire hair is fully coated in the mixture.
- If you don't have an application brush, put on rubber gloves and use your fingers to apply the conditioner.
- Purchase paint brushes from a convenience store or beauty supply/product store.
Step 5. Leave the conditioner on your hair for an hour
Set a timer for an hour to let you know how long the conditioner has been sitting. This will give your hair plenty of time to absorb the coffee color that could mask the gray color.
Step 6. Rinse hair with cold water
After an hour, place your hair under cold running water and massage your hair carefully to remove any remaining conditioner. Once the rinse water is clear, the conditioner and coffee have been removed from the hair.
Rinse your hair in the sink or shower, depending on which method is more practical for you
Step 7. Repeat the process several times to darken the gray color
You may need to apply coffee conditioner to your hair several times until the gray is completely covered. Repeat the process the next day to color your hair so that the gray hair looks darker.
Once you get the color you want, you only need to use this coffee conditioner twice a month
Method 3 of 3: Using Hena and Coffee
Step 1. Pour 60 grams of henna powder into a bowl
Measure the henna using a measuring cup and pour it into a ceramic or plastic bowl. This measure is considered appropriate if you only want to color gray hair. If you want to dye your entire hair, it's a good idea to use more henna.
Look for henna powder formulated for hair at a convenience store, beauty product store, or the internet
Step 2. Add warm black coffee to the hena little by little
Brew fresh black coffee (the thicker, the better). Once the temperature has dropped, but the coffee is still warm, slowly pour the coffee into the bowl of henna to make sure you don't add too much coffee right away.
For example, you can gradually pour 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of coffee into the bowl
Step 3. Stir the henna and coffee until no clumps of coffee remain
Once you've poured the coffee over the henna, stir the two ingredients together with a spoon. Keep pouring in the coffee little by little and stirring the ingredients until the mixture has a consistency that resembles pancake batter.
Try to break up as many coffee clumps as possible by stirring the henna and coffee thoroughly
Step 4. Cover the bowl with the mixture with plastic wrap and let it rest for 4-6 hours
After the coffee and henna are mixed evenly, attach the plastic wrap to the mouth/opening of the bowl. Attach the plastic to the wall of the bowl to prevent it from sliding out of place or use a rubber band to secure the plastic to the bowl. Let the henna and coffee mixture sit for 4-6 hours before using it.
Some henna products have instructions for use that require you to let the henna sit for more than 6 hours (eg overnight). Follow the instructions that came with the product you purchased so that you can use it properly
Step 5. Apply the mixture on the gray hair using your fingers or a paint brush
If you use your fingers, wear gloves to prevent the henna and coffee mixture from staining your skin. Take a small amount of the mixture using your fingers or an application brush and smooth it over the gray hair. Coat each section of gray hair with the mixture to ensure the mixture can color or cover gray hair.
- For example, you can apply the mixture to just the roots of your hair, a few strands of gray hair, or all of your hair.
- If you are using the mixture for your entire hair, separate your hair into sections using bobby pins.
- Look for paint brushes at a beauty supply/product store, supermarket, or the internet.
Step 6. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let it sit for six hours
Wear a shower cap or attach a plastic bag to the stained area to keep the area safe and not to fall apart/move freely. Set a timer for six hours so you know when to take off your shower cap and rinse your hair.
If you're concerned about the effect of henna and coffee on your hair, let the mixture sit for a shorter amount of time
Step 7. Rinse hair to remove coffee and henna residue before shampooing
Remove the shower cap and use cold water to rinse the hair. Keep rinsing hair until the rinse water looks clear. The clear rinse water indicates that you have removed all the coffee and henna residue. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual, and enjoy the charm of your color-treated hair!
