Puppies are very susceptible to worms. Generally, intestinal worms in puppies are transmitted by mothers who are pregnant, giving birth, or breastfeeding. In addition, intestinal worms can also be caused by feces, food, and drinks contaminated with worms. You will need to treat a dewormed puppy when he is 2-3 weeks old. You need to treat puppies with worms on a regular schedule. Worms can be treated with deworming drugs, either in liquid or pill form.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Consult a Veterinarian
Step 1. Get your puppy checked by the vet
When you've just adopted a puppy, you need to get him checked out by the vet right away. The vet will check the dog's health and litter. After that, the doctor will tell you if your puppy has intestinal worms.
Generally, the cost to examine a puppy at a veterinary clinic is IDR 1,000,000 - IDR 1,500,000
Step 2. Take a sample of the puppy's stool to the vet
The vet will examine the puppy's feces for worms. Place the puppy litter in a plastic bag and take it to the nearest veterinary clinic.
- Although worms are sometimes invisible (depending on the species, worms usually look like noodles, hair, or lumps of round worms), your puppy's feces may still be infected with worms. In addition, some species of worms can only be seen with a microscope.
- Visiting the vet is one of the easiest ways to treat intestinal worms in puppies. If your veterinarian can clearly identify the worms in your puppy's feces, they will probably treat the problem right away. Your veterinarian will prescribe an ingested deworming medication for your puppy.
Step 3. Buy deworming
Generally, veterinary clinics also sell deworming, so you don't have to go to the vet shop or pharmacy. Consult a veterinarian to prescribe the right deworming medication for your puppy. Also ask if you can give your puppy an over-the-counter dewormer. Deworming drugs are also generally sold at the nearest veterinary store or pharmacy. Deworming drugs are sold in liquid or chewable form.
- The vet may examine the puppy first before prescribing the right deworming medication for him.
- In order to be completely eliminated, some species of worms can only be eradicated with certain deworming drugs. Consult with your veterinarian to find out which brand and type of deworming is right for your puppy.
- Some over-the-counter deworming medications can kill several types of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms.
- Usually, deworming drugs are sold at a price of Rp. 500,000.
Part 2 of 3: Choosing the Right Deworming
Step 1. Choose a vet-recommended deworming medication
Some deworming medications can cause serious side effects, such as diarrhea. Therefore, consult with a veterinarian first to find out the right type of deworming medicine. Your veterinarian will generally recommend the deworming you normally use.
Step 2. Choose a deworming agent that can eradicate the species of worm that infects your puppy
Some deworming medications may only eradicate certain species of worms. If you choose the wrong deworming medication, it may not be able to eradicate the species of worm that infected your puppy. Therefore, first identify the worm species before buying deworming medicine.
- You can identify the species of worm by observing it or consulting a veterinarian. It's best to let your veterinarian identify the worm species.
- There are several anti-parasitic drugs that can be applied to the dog's neck every month. This drug can also ward off parasitic worms. For example, Revolution and Advocate are brands of parasite-fighting drugs that can be applied to dogs. However, consult your veterinarian first before applying this medication to puppies.
Step 3. Read the deworming label carefully and make sure the medication is safe for puppies
Some deworming medications are not formulated for puppies and can be dangerous if consumed. Read the deworming label to make sure it's safe for puppies to take. If not, choose another dewormer.
Part 3 of 3: Giving Puppies Deworming
Step 1. Weigh the puppy first to determine the right dose
Since puppies are still growing and developing, weigh them before deworming them. After weighing your puppy, determine the right dose for his body weight by checking the information on the deworming package label. Dogs must get treatment with the right dose in order to recover from intestinal worms. However, make sure the dose of deworming given is not too much.
Step 2. Fill the syringe with the dose of deworming your veterinarian has prescribed
When going to fill the syringe, dip the tip of the needle into the medicine and then pull the plunger until the tube is filled. Fill the syringe until the dose is as recommended by your veterinarian or on the deworming label.
- If the deworming medicine is in pill form, or the syringe contains the right dose of medicine, you can skip this stage.
- Know whether deworming should be given before or after meals. In order for deworming to work more effectively, you must follow the proper procedures.
Step 3. Distract the puppy
Flick your fingers, wiggle a toy in front of his face, or lure the puppy with a treat to focus his attention on your hand. Puppies are very easily distracted, so once he's focused on you, you should deworm him immediately.
This process may be easier to do when the puppy is sitting on your lap. You can hold the puppy with your left hand, and distract him with your right. After that, you can easily put deworming in your dog's mouth
Step 4. Open the puppy's mouth with your hand
Use your finger to gently open the dog's mouth. Insert your finger between the dog's lips in front of his mouth, applying constant pressure to open his jaw.
This stage is quite easy to do if the puppy's attention is distracted
Step 5. Put the medicine in the puppy's mouth
Once the puppy's mouth is open, you can put the medicine in it. If the medicine to be given is in liquid form, insert the tip of the syringe 5 cm into the puppy's mouth, then press the plunger of the syringe so that the medicine can be dispensed. After that, the puppy will swallow the liquid medicine quickly.
If the medicine to be given is in pill form, place the medicine 8 cm into the dog's mouth. This is done so that the dog does not regurgitate the drug
Step 6. Give the puppy deworming at the right dose and according to the schedule given by the doctor
Deworming medicine will be more effective if consumed several times. How often your puppy will need deworming will depend on the type and brand of medication prescribed by the doctor.
- Although it is quite effective when taken for the first time, deworming medicine does not have a good enough residual effect. In other words, puppies need to take deworming again to eradicate the entire generation of worms that hatch in their bodies.
- For example, a common deworming schedule for puppies is: 1-3 days in a row, then repeat after 2-3 weeks.
Step 7. Take a sample of the puppy's stool to the vet
After deworming is complete, collect the puppy poop sample again. Take this sample to the vet for examination.
