Some people believe that speaking in tongues is a very effective way of praying to experience God's presence, but this method is not widely known among Christians. If you want to learn to pray in tongues, start by forming the right perspective and saying the right words as you practice.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Forming the Right Perspective
Step 1. Trust God's promised salvation as a foundation for focusing attention
Focus your mind on God and the Holy Spirit that fills you. The ability to speak in tongues is considered a sign of the strength of faith. So it will be easier for you to master tongues if you focus on this understanding.
Another way to help you concentrate is to say a mantra, for example, "Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life" or choose a favorite verse in the Bible and repeat it over and over
Step 2. Study the Scriptures for an explanation of tongues
Read and meditate on scriptures that discuss tongues, such as 1 Corinthians 14:18. Some people think that the ability to speak in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit to feel God's presence when praying.
- Read several other verses on this subject, such as Acts 10:46a, Acts 2:4a, and 1 Corinthians 14:4.
- If a member of the church speaks in tongues, ask him or her to explain how to pray in tongues so you can practice it.
Warning: Tongues are still a hotly debated topic today. Be careful about speaking in tongues because not everyone can accept it.
Step 3. Convince yourself that you are able to speak in tongues
Cultivate confidence and a strong desire to speak in tongues to keep you motivated to practice consistently. Learning to speak in tongues is quite difficult at first. Repeat the affirmation that you can speak in tongues to build confidence that you are capable of it.
- Repeat a positive mantra to yourself, for example, "I am a child of God. Jesus said that I should always pray and rejoice. So I want to communicate with God in tongues."
- Focus on the reasons that trigger the desire to speak in tongues, then use them as a source of motivation. That way, you'll stay motivated to practice so you can speak in tongues once you try it!
Step 4. Find a quiet, distraction-free place to practice
Make sure you can sit alone in a quiet place to pray in tongues for 1 hour or as desired. Avoid distractions, such as the sound of people talking, the TV, or a car honking outside, which can make it difficult for you to concentrate while praying.
It's a good idea to practice in private so as not to be overheard by others
Method 2 of 3: Making the Right Sound
Step 1. Start practicing by making a monosyllable sound
Repeat the first sound that comes to mind as if you were joking, rather than on purpose. In other words, don't try to say certain words or phrases, unless they come up spontaneously at the time.
- At first, your voice may sound weird because it sounds like a baby just learning to talk, but this is the right way to go! You can speak in tongues when you pray if you make random sounds.
- Your voice may be intermittent and repetitive. It will be like this when you start practicing. Don't worry and don't give up!
Step 2. Pay attention to repeated sounds or hints through your voice
Observe the syllables that are most often spoken spontaneously, then focus on those words as you practice. These words or syllables may be part of the "language of prayer", ie words and sounds that just flow from the heart because of the power of the Holy Spirit.
Pay attention to sounds or words that startle you, such as syllables or letter combinations that you don't normally pronounce. This could be an indication that God is speaking to you. So, get in the habit of using that word or phrase as the language of prayer
Step 3. Use words or sounds that come up spontaneously
These words or sounds are inner expressions that enrich the language of prayer as you speak in tongues. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit that enables you to speak in tongues.
You need to move your lips by giggling, instead of waiting for God to move them. However, God is able to bring up a word or sound in your mind that will form the basis for speaking in tongues if spoken over and over again
Tip: You can practice using words that are often seen during daily activities, for example repeating certain words written in the Bible while praying.
Step 4. Ask God to give you the power of faith so you can control your thoughts
If you start to hesitate while practicing praying in tongues, repeat a positive mantra, for example, "Lord, strengthen my faith." This method keeps you focused on your desire to speak in tongues so you don't give up easily.
You don't have to make this request out loud; enough in my heart
Method 3 of 3: Avoiding Frequent Mistakes
Step 1. Know that God doesn't ask you to speak in tongues
Do not let you can not control your lips or speech when speaking in tongues. Instead, imagine God telling you the words to speak through your spirit.
Misunderstandings can be the reason some people doubt tongues. There is an erroneous opinion that people who speak in tongues are in a trance
Step 2. Don't be overly complicated or pessimistic about speaking in tongues
The first time you practice, you may experience difficulties that make you feel insecure or doubt your faith. If this happens, don't push yourself. Continue the exercise after praying or resting.
When not practicing, pray to God as usual for His help and guidance as you learn how to speak in tongues
Step 3. Do not discuss the method of praying in tongues with those who oppose it
Apart from being negative about tongues, some people see this as a way of worshiping Satan. Discussing this method with them can discourage you or give up.
