Email can be a quick and easy medium for communicating with friends. You can write emails to your friends any way you like, but some basic pointers might work for you. If you want to write an email to a friend you haven't seen/contacted with in a long time, it's a good idea to apologize for the lack of contact with them and let them know how you've been doing. You are free to insert images and emojis to color your letter, and don't forget to reread and edit your message before sending.

Part 1 of 4: Getting Started E-mail
Step 1. Find your friend's email address
Before writing a message, make sure you have the correct email address for your friend. If you've emailed him before, you can find his address in your email contacts. If not, you can ask another friend.
Type the email address into the “To” field
Step 2. Choose a subject or title that summarizes your message
The subject or title field is below the “To” column and is labeled “Subject”. Summarize your message in a few words in this column to let your friend know what he or she is about to read.
- If you just want to say hello, you can fill in the subject line with a simple title, like “Hi!”.
- If you want to invite her to your birthday party, you can create a subject like “Invitation to my birthday party.”
Step 3. Open the message with the greeting
Begin the message with a greeting, followed by the name and a comma. Since this is an email to your friend, you can use a casual greeting like “Hi”, “Hey” or “Hello”.

Step 4. Ask how he is
Skip a line, then ask questions like “How are you?” or make statements such as “I hope you are doing well.” The question or statement reflects your concern for him.
Part 2 of 4: Writing the Body Part of the Message

Step 3. As much as possible avoid capitalization of all letters in a word
You may want to capitalize when you type a word to show your cheerfulness or enthusiasm, but writing like that may give the impression that you are shouting. Instead, use asterisks or bold text to highlight important sections.
Step 4. Ask questions occasionally
Ask questions about what you are talking about. This shows that you are also interested in knowing his opinion.
If you're talking about your trip to the beach, you can ask questions like “Oh yeah, have you been to the beach this holiday? If not, you should also go to the beach!”
Part 3 of 4: Writing an Email for a Friend You Haven't Seen in a Long Time
Step 1. Apologize for the lack of communication
It's natural for people to start to lose touch with each other, but you should still apologize to start your letter (and your communication) on the right foot.
You could say, for example, "I'm sorry we haven't talked in a while. I've been very busy lately."
Step 2. Tell him how you're doing and ask him how he's doing
Since the two of you haven't talked in a long time, there's probably a lot you've missed out on. Tell him about interesting developments in your life, and ask him how he is doing.
You could say, “Since we last talked, I've actually dated someone. Yes so far everything is smooth. Have you started dating too?”
Step 3. Talk about things you have mutual interest in
Take some time to talk a little about the things you both like. If both of you are big football fans, take advantage of a few lines to talk about your favorite team's last game. Don't forget to ask for his opinion.

Step 4. Add a solicitation or request at the end of the email if you wish

Part 4 of 4: Closing Email
Step 1. Experiment with different fonts and text colors
Scroll through the text formatting bar, which is a row of icons at the top or bottom of the text compose window for available text color and font options.
- If your email is on a serious topic, it's a good idea to stick to black text in a basic font.
- If your friend is using a different mail server, some fonts may not display. Some types of fonts such as Arial, Times, Verdana, Trebuchet, and Geneva can usually be a "safe" option.
- Try not to overuse different fonts or text colors. Your text should still be easy to read.
Step 2. Add emoji if it feels right
If you want to send a fun email to your friends, add some cute emojis in different sections to make your message look a lot more interesting. However, if you're writing an email on a more serious topic, it's a good idea to avoid using emojis. This element will make your message seem too casual.

Step 3. End the message by wishing him good things
Send him good wishes, let him know that you're looking forward to your letter, and tell him that you'd like to see him soon.
You could say, for example, “Have a nice week. I'll be waiting for your reply!"
Step 4. Close and sign your email
End the email with a closing sentence such as “Greetings,” or “Your best friend,”. After that, skip a few lines and type in your name.
Step 5. Insert the image if necessary
Click the “Insert photo” button which usually looks like a picture or camera icon. This icon is next to all the text format buttons. After that, you can choose a photo from your computer to upload to the message.
- If you're sending an email to let your friends know about your new pet dog, it's a good idea to include a photo of your dog as well.
- Try uploading just a few photos. If you upload too many photos, your message may end up in the spam folder of your friend's email account.
Step 6. Check and re-edit your message
When you're done writing, reread your message one or two times to look for spelling or grammar mistakes. Your friends can read your messages more easily if there are no errors. If you are a child, ask a trusted adult for help.
Double-check the message to make sure you added the correct email address
Step 7. Press the send button or “Send”
Once ready, click the button labeled “Send” at the bottom of the message. Now your message has been sent!
Tips
- The tone and appearance of the message should match your relationship with your friend.
- Add a post-script (P. S.) or NB if you forgot to say something. This additional message is added under your signature.
