Ever heard of vegetables called brussel sprouts? In fact, this small, greenish-shaped vegetable is a member of the cabbage family that doesn't have too many fans, mainly because of its very bland taste when boiled or steamed. To enrich the taste of brussel sprouts, try roasting them in the oven and, if you wish, mix some olive oil with a little balsamic vinegar for an even more delicious taste! If you have limited time, split the brussel sprouts first to reduce the cooking time.
Ingredients
- 1 pack frozen brussel sprouts
- 60 or 120 ml olive oil
- 1-3 tsp. Gararm
Step
Part 1 of 3: Oiling and Seasoning Brussels Sprout
Step 1. Preheat the oven
Set the oven to 204°C and preheat it while preparing the brussel sprouts for roasting.
Step 2. Spread olive oil all over the pan
Before removing the brussel sprouts from the freezer, you can preheat the oven and greased baking sheet. First, pour the olive oil into the baking dish and spread it evenly over the entire surface. After that, put the pan in the oven to heat it up.
A preheated baking sheet – and greased with heated olive oil – can speed up the ripening process of frozen brussel sprouts
Step 3. Pour the frozen brussel sprouts into a bowl
Once removed from the freezer, pour the brussel sprouts into a large enough bowl
Cut or tear the brussel sprout wrapper to open it
Step 4. Coat the brussel sprouts with olive oil
In order for frozen vegetables to cook evenly, make sure each part is well coated with oil. Therefore, pour 60 ml or even 120 ml of olive oil on the surface of the brussel sprouts.
Step 5. Sprinkle salt over the greased brussel sprouts
After brushing the brussel sprouts with olive oil, sprinkle 1-3 tsp. salt to the surface. In fact, the amount of salt really depends on the level of saltiness you want so you can modify it according to taste.
Use any type of salt according to your taste. Some of the common types of salt used are kosher salt and coarse-grained sea salt
Step 6. Coat the brussel sprouts with oil and salt
After that, use your hands to stir the brussel sprouts so that they are all coated well and there are no lumps of salt.
Make sure each brussel sprout is well coated with olive oil and salt
Part 2 of 3: Grilling Brussels Sprout
Step 1. Arrange the brussel sprouts so they don't overlap in the pan
Place the greased and salted brussel sprouts in a greased baking dish. After that, use your hands to separate the brussel sprouts so they don't touch or overlap.
Always use special oven mitts to put the baking sheet in the oven and remove it from the oven. Be careful, the very hot oven temperature can hurt the skin on your hands
Step 2. Bake the brussel sprouts for 40-45 minutes
Very carefully, put the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. Always keep an eye on the oven light to gauge the level of doneness of the brussel sprouts! Well-ripe Brussels sprouts should be golden brown with crisp edges and slightly dark in color.
Be careful, edges that are too dark indicate that the brussel sprouts are scorched
Step 3. Remove the brussel sprouts from the oven and serve immediately
Once the brussel sprouts are fully cooked, immediately transfer them to a serving bowl or plate; Serve roasted brussel sprouts as a side dish for dinner or eat them straight as a healthy snack. If the brussel sprouts don't go away, place the leftovers in an airtight container or plastic clip and store them in the refrigerator. Generally, the quality of brussel sprouts will remain good for up to 3 to 4 days after being stored in the refrigerator.
- If brussel sprouts are being served to children, try serving them with a bowl of ranch sauce.
- Careful; You could burn your mouth if you eat brussel sprouts that are still very hot!
Part 3 of 3: Modifying Recipes
Step 1. Replace olive oil with coconut oil
If you don't like the taste of olive oil (or if you don't have it at home), try substituting another vegetable oil like coconut oil in the same amount. Don't worry, coconut oil can do the same job as olive oil and won't change the taste of roasted brussel sprouts too much.
- Using coconut oil will infuse the roasted brussel sprouts with a hint of coconut flavor and make them taste sweeter.
- Some examples of other vegetable oils you can use are safflower oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, or sesame oil.
Step 2. Split the brussel sprouts so they cook faster when roasting
If you have limited time, try splitting the brussel sprouts first before mixing them with the olive oil and salt. After that, simply roast the brussel sprouts for 20-23 minutes instead of 40-45 minutes.
- Stick to the 204°C oven for roasting the brussel sprouts.
- Use a sharp-edged knife to cut the frozen brussel sprouts. Although frozen brussels sprouts are tougher in texture, you can actually slice them easily with a very sharp knife.
Step 3. Mix olive oil with balsamic vinegar
To enrich the flavor of roasted brussel sprouts, try mixing 120 ml of olive oil with 3 tbsp. balsamic vinegar that tastes sweet and sour before pouring it over the surface of the brussel sprouts. After that, add enough salt to season the brussel sprouts.
You can easily find balsamic vinegar in many large supermarkets
Tips
- Frozen Brussels sprouts can be purchased at most major supermarkets.
- Prefer to eat fresh vegetables instead of frozen? Try buying brussel sprouts at the nearest market or supermarket. You can always freeze them yourself if you buy too many brussel sprouts at the same time.
