If you don't want to bother turning on the grill just to cook the main course, there's nothing wrong if you use it to bake a side dish. Chickpeas are a great option because you can roast them while the main course is simmering, and this method produces delicious roasted chickpeas with a smoky aroma. If you don't want the beans to burn on the outside, you can wrap them in aluminum foil. Follow some of the simple suggestions in this article to get tender and delicious hot roasted chickpeas in no time.
Step
Method 1 of 7: Heat the charcoal/gas grill to high heat
Step 1. Turn the heat setting of the gas grill only halfway, or turn on the charcoal/coal in the chimney
When it is hot and slightly covered in ashes, carefully pour the charcoal over the grill bars. Open the lid and let the grill heat up for about 5 minutes before you place the chickpeas on top.
Method 2 of 7: Prepare half a kilogram of chickpeas
Step 1. Wash the chickpeas and cut off the ends
Do not remove too much of the ends, just cut about 1 cm at each end of the beans. After that, put the chickpeas in a bowl.
Method 3 of 7: Season the chickpeas with salt, olive oil, and pepper
Step 1. Pour 1 tbsp. (15 ml) olive oil on chickpeas
Add salt and pepper as desired. Next, mix the chickpeas with your hands or tongs until they are all coated in the spices.
To give a spicy sensation, do not use salt, but add 1/2 tsp. (1 gram) cajun seasoning
Method 4 of 7: Place the chickpeas on the grill bars
Step 1. Apply oil on the grill bars, then place the chickpeas on top
Arrange the beans in an upright position with the bars so they don't fall off. If you are afraid that the beans will fall through the gaps in the grate, place the beans in the roasting basket and place them directly on the grate.
Method 5 of 7: Bake the chickpeas for about 3 minutes and turn once
Step 1. Cover the grill and cook the chickpeas for about 1 minute
After that, open the lid of the roaster and carefully turn the beans over with tongs. Close the grill again and cook the chickpeas until tender.
It's okay to cook the chickpeas longer if you like the softness of the chickpeas
Method 6 of 7: Take the chickpeas from the roaster, add an aroma like lemon or garlic and mix well
Step 1. Transfer the roasted chickpeas to a serving plate and taste
Add more pepper or salt to the chickpeas if necessary. If you want, you can also add a few cloves of minced garlic or lemon juice and mix it well.
- You'll need to wait until the chickpeas are removed from the grill before adding the garlic. Garlic burns easily which makes it taste bitter.
- Sprinkle the parmesan cheese slices over the chickpeas for a strong savory taste.
Method 7 of 7: Serve roasted chickpeas with other foods
Step 1. You can also mix roasted chickpeas with other roasted vegetables for a salad
For example, you can mix chickpeas with some roasted vegetables, such as tomatoes, sliced onions, turnips, or tender potato wedges.
Place the remaining chickpeas in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days
Tips
- If you prefer to roast the chickpeas without being directly exposed to the charcoal, wrap the beans in aluminum foil and place them directly on the grill. Cook the chickpeas for about 3 minutes.
- If you want to save time, you can buy pre-cut beans at the supermarket, instead of cutting the ends yourself.
- Grilled chickpeas are perfect with chopped bacon or sausage.
