Creating embossed leather requires special equipment to embed the design onto the leather surface. You can create great designs either by stamping or pressing metal shapes into the rawhide. If you don't have the equipment for this leather work, choose the pinch method and if you want to invest in leather design tools, you should try the second method.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Creating Emboss with Clamps
Step 1. Purchase rawhide at a craft supply store
Embossing is useless on clothes or accessories that have gone through the manufacturing process.
Step 2. Look for a sturdy metal shape or metal leather stamp
You can use steel or buy a leather stamp with your preferred design online. You can order custom leather stamps through sellers on Etsy.
If you're using metal steel, make sure it has sharp edges, rather than a tapered design. This will ensure that your shape appears more real on the skin
Step 3. Smooth your rawhide on a workbench
The front should face up. The leather should be near the edge of the table where you can attach the C-shaped metal clamps firmly.
Step 4. Moisten a sponge
However, don't let the sponge get too wet, so wring it out a few times.
Step 5. Scrub the skin with the sponge in an even layer
Move the skin so that it can be inserted under the clamp.
Step 6. Place a flat metal stamp or metal object on the leather at the location you want to emboss
Step 7. Arrange so that the top leg of the C clamp touches the center of the metal object
Tighten the clamps to the maximum.
Step 8. Release clamp C after 20 minutes
Seal the leather with a leather liner if you want to increase the durability of the design and the surface of the leather.
Leather coating should be used after all embossing is complete. This upholstery should also be applied before you sew or finish leather fitting on any other leather project
Method 2 of 2: Skin Stamping
Step 1. Purchase a leather stamp kit online or from a craft store
Purchase 3D stamps with cylinders that fit into all of the stamps. You can order custom stamps online or start with an alphabet stamp set.
Make sure this metal cylinder matches your stamp. The cylinder is the part you will use to create the shape of the stamp on the leather
Step 2. Lay your rawhide on a flat workbench
Make sure the front of the leather is facing up. Determine the location of your embossed design.
Step 3. Clean the surface of the skin with a slightly damp sponge
If the water changes the color of your skin drastically, allow it to dry for a while.
Step 4. Place the metal stamp on the leather, where you want it
Step 5. Insert the metal cylinder into the center of the stamp
Hold firmly with one hand.
Step 6. Hit the top of the stamp a few times with your wooden bat
Be careful that the stamp doesn't move when you hit it. You can lift the stamp to see if the print has gone deep enough and re-align it for the next stamping process.
This method requires practice to master the level of violence when hitting the stamp
Step 7. Repeat the above steps with more stamps if you want to create a more elaborate design
Use a leather finish product when you have finished embossing and before you use the leather for your final project.
