Sports jerseys are made using high quality materials and need to be washed in a special way to prevent damage. Before washing your jersey, you should treat the stains on the clothes, especially if they are worn for sports. Then, separate the jerseys by color and flip them over so the inside is on the outside. Wash the jersey with a mixture of warm and hot water, then hang it to dry completely
Step
Method 1 of 4: Treating Stains
Step 1. Use a mixture of vinegar and water to remove grass stains
Mix 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water. If you wash more than 2 very dirty jerseys, use at least 240 ml of vinegar. Then, use a stiff-bristled toothbrush and dip it in the mixture. Gently scrub the grass stain with a toothbrush. Then, soak the stained area for 1-2 hours in the mixture before washing it off.
Step 2. Remove the blood stain with cold water
Turn the jersey over and rinse with cold water to remove as much blood as possible. Then, soak the jersey in cold water while rubbing the stained area with your finger. Repeat for 4-5 minutes until the blood is completely clean.
Step 3. Use shampoo or soap to get rid of stubborn blood stains
If cold water alone doesn't get rid of the blood, try cleaning the stained area with soap or shampoo. Rub a small amount of shampoo or soap on the blood stain. Then, rinse and wash the jersey.
Step 4. Clean the sweat stains with vinegar
Green or yellow stains usually come from sweat. Mix 15 ml of vinegar in 120 ml of water. Soak the stained area of the jersey in the mixture for 30 minutes and then wash it off.
Method 2 of 4: Preparing the Jersey
Step 1. Separate jerseys according to color
White jerseys must be washed separately because other colors can fade into these clothes. Black jerseys should always be washed together because they can fade into other laundry. Jerseys in other colors can be washed together.
Step 2. Wash the jersey according to the load
When you wash a jersey, don't wash it with other clothes, especially blue jeans. The paint on the blue jeans is water-soluble and washes off the jersey.
Step 3. Unlock all buttons
Jerseys can wrinkle if washed while the buttons are still on. Undo all buttons on clothes before washing, especially the front.
Step 4. Turn the jersey so that the inside is outside
This step protects the patch, text, and stitching on the jersey. If not reversed, the jersey screen printing can stick together and the seams will unravel.
Method 3 of 4: Collectively Washing Jersey
Step 1. Fill the washing machine with water
Set the temperature to hot and fill the washing machine until it is filled with water to a height of 13 cm. Then, change the water temperature to warm and allow the washing machine to fully charge.
If you have a front door washing machine, change the water temperature from hot to warm after about 2 minutes
Step 2. Put the detergent in the washing machine
Use a high-quality color-protecting detergent that is effective at removing stains. Add a spoonful of detergent if washing more than one jersey. Use half a spoon also only wash one jersey. Then, put the jersey in the washing machine and turn it on.
- If you are using liquid detergent, the bottle cap should have a size that helps with the amount of use.
- If you have a front door washing machine, add detergent and jersey before starting to fill the water. Then, change the temperature after one minute.
Step 3. Pause the washing machine after 1 minute to allow the jersey to soak
After the washing machine has been running for 1 minute, stop and let the jersey soak. This step will remove more stains from the jersey than a regular wash cycle.
You can let the jersey soak in the washing machine for one day
Step 4. Complete the cycle and check the jersey
Once the jersey is submerged, restart the washing machine and complete the cycle. When you're done, check to make sure the stain is completely clean. If not, clean the stain again and repeat washing the jersey.
Step 5. Hang the jersey immediately after washing to dry
If you leave the jersey in the washing machine to dry, the clothes may wrinkle. Patches and text on jerseys can also be damaged. Take the jersey out of the washing machine and hang it on the hanger to dry. It usually takes 2 days for the jersey to dry completely.
Method 4 of 4: Washing Sports Uniforms
Step 1. Wash the jersey immediately after a match or practice
The longer the jersey is left, the sweat and dirt can get deeper into the jersey until it breaks. Immediately wash your sports clothes immediately after wearing them to compete or practice.
Step 2. Use powdered detergent
Liquid detergent can contain elements that damage the jersey. So, you should use a powder detergent. If you only wash one jersey, save on detergent. Just use half of the recommended dose
Step 3. Add vinegar to deal with the smell
If your jersey smells bad enough, put 240 ml of white vinegar in the washing machine's bleach dispenser. The vinegar will neutralize the smell of your jersey.
Step 4. Set the washing machine to a gentle cycle with cold water
A gentle cycle will prevent damage to the jersey fibers, and cold water will protect the existing screen printing. The gentle cycle is usually used for fragile clothes.
Step 5. Dry the jersey to dry
Do not put the jersey in the dryer. Heat can damage the elasticity of the jersey spandex and melt the screen printing. Instead, hang the jersey in a wooden or plastic hanger and leave it overnight to dry.
