Glycerol, also known as glycerin, is a thick, clear, odorless liquid found in many beauty products. Glycerol is a humectant which means it can draw moisture from the surrounding environment. Applying glycerol to dry hair can help retain moisture. You can also make glycerol in the form of a spray, hair mask, or even mix it with conditioner.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making Glycerol Spray
Step 1. Pour cup of distilled water into a spray bottle
Look for bottles that spray smooth. Do not let you spray too much glycerol on only a small section of hair. Look for a bottle that will gently spray the glycerol all over your hair. Pour cup (about 120 ml) of distilled water into the bottle. Distilled water is better than tap water which still contains minerals because it can dry out your hair.
Step 2. Add cup of rose water to the bottle if desired
Rose water has a fresh aroma that can make your hair smell good all day long. Add cup (about 120 ml) of rose water to the distilled water in a spray bottle if desired. If you don't want to use rose water, you can add a few drops of any essential oil you like, such as lavender or orange oil to give this hair spray a scent.
You can buy rose water at pharmacies or major department stores, as well as online stores
Step 3. Add 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerol and 1 teaspoon of olive oil
Choose vegetable-based glycerol, such as glycerol from coconut oil or shea butter. Add 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of vegetable glycerol and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of olive oil to a spray bottle to complete this concoction.
Glycerol or plant-based glycerin can be purchased at your local pharmacy or convenience store, or online
Step 4. Shake the bottle and then spray the mixture onto damp hair
Shake the bottle properly before each use to mix the oil and glycerol with the other ingredients. After that, spray the contents into your hair while it's still damp after shampooing. Spray a little to coat the hair, do not let your hair sticky and difficult to manage.
Try spraying this mixture in different amounts until you know which one works best for your hair type
Step 5. Comb then style your hair as usual
Use a wide-toothed comb to spread the glycerol from roots to ends. After that, style your hair as usual.
Step 6. Use this spray again during the day to freshen up your hair if you wish
You can use this spray as you get ready in the morning or throughout the day to refresh your hair and tame unruly hair. Spray a little on the hair then comb to straighten straight hair or smooth it by hand to style curly hair.
Method 2 of 4: Making a Glycerol Hair Mask
Step 1. Whisk 1 egg and 2 tablespoons of castor oil in a bowl
To make a moisturizing mask, beat an egg in a small bowl. After that, add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of castor oil to a bowl and mix.
Castor oil can be purchased at large department stores or online
Step 2. Add 1 teaspoon of glycerol and apple cider vinegar
Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of glycerol and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of apple cider vinegar to a bowl. Mix all ingredients until smooth and even.
If you want, you can also add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey to the mask
Step 3. Apply this mask then massage it into the hair
Use your hands or a pastry brush to apply this moisturizing mask to the hair shaft. Make sure to coat your hair evenly from roots to tips. After that, gently massage the mask into your hair.
You can do this treatment 1 or 2 times a week
Step 4. Wrap a warm towel over your hair and leave the mask on for 40 minutes
Heat the towel by drying it in the sun or tumbling it in the dryer, then wrap it around your hair. This heat will help the ingredients in the mask seep into your hair. Leave the mask on for 40 minutes.
Step 5. Wash hair
Use a gentle shampoo that doesn't contain parabens or sulfates that can damage your damp hair. You don't need to use conditioner anymore because hair masks do that.
Method 3 of 4: Adding Glycerol to Conditioner
Step 1. Pour 10 ml of glycerol into a 50 ml bottle of conditioner
Open the cap of the conditioner bottle and place a small funnel in the mouth of the bottle. Slowly pour 10 ml of glycerol through the funnel and into the bottle.
If your bottle of conditioner is larger or smaller than 50 ml, adjust the volume of glycerol added
Step 2. Shake the conditioner bottle
Replace the bottle cap. Shake the bottle before each use to ensure that the glycerol and conditioner are thoroughly mixed.
Step 3. Use conditioner as usual
You can use this added product like a regular conditioner. Just apply it to your hair when you're done rinsing out the shampoo. Leave it for a few minutes then rinse. After that, you can style your hair as usual.
Method 4 of 4: Using Glycerol Effectively
Step 1. Check the humidity in one day
If the air around you is very dry, instead of drawing air into your hair, glycerol will do the opposite and release moisture from your hair into the air. If the air is too humid, your hair may swell and accumulate too much fluid, resulting in tangles. So, if the humidity in the air around you is above or below average, use less glycerol than usual.
Step 2. Dilute the glycerol with water before using it on the hair
Glycerol is a very thick liquid resembling syrup. If you use concentrated glycerol, your hair will become sticky and messy. Always dilute glycerol with water or another hair-safe liquid, such as conditioner, before use.
Step 3. Choose natural glycerol
Glycerol can be obtained from vegetable products, such as coconut oil and shea butter, as well as animal fats. However, glycerol can also be made synthetically. Unfortunately, this synthetic glycerol may have some health risks. So, until there is more information about this risk, you should avoid using synthetic glycerol.
