If you want to curl your hair without curling irons, there are still several ways you can try to get satisfactory results with just a hairdryer. If you naturally already have curly hair, you can embellish your hair by using a diffuser attached to a blow dryer. Braiding damp hair before blow drying is a great way to curl straight hair. You can also use a round comb and a hairdryer to get the same result. After curling your hair, spray on styling product to keep it looking great all day if you have naturally straight hair.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Curling Hair with a Round Comb
Step 1. Comb through damp hair and apply mousse or gel, if desired
Use a brush or comb to remove the tangled sections of your hair so you can achieve smooth curls. If you normally use a product like mousse to style your hair, dig a small amount of the product and apply it evenly to the entire surface of your hair with your hands.
- Dry your hair with a towel before doing so so it doesn't get soaked.
- A large-toothed comb is the best tool for styling damp hair and removing frizz.
- As an alternative to mousse or gel, spray a heat shield on your hair to protect it from the heat generated by the dryer. There is no need to use a heat protectant and mousse at the same time.
Step 2. Pin the top layer of hair
Divide the hair into 2, the top layer and the bottom layer, starting at the top of the ear. Use a hair tie or large bobby pins to gather the top layer of your hair and divide it at the top of your head. This will make it easier for you to curl the bottom layer of hair first.
If you have super thick hair, try separating your hair into more than 2 sections to make it easier to manage. For example, you can divide the top and bottom layers of hair into 2 sections each
Step 3. Place a round comb in the center of a 3-5 cm section of hair
Choose a comb according to your needs: a small comb will curl your hair into small curls, while a large comb will curl your hair in large amounts. Select a section of hair from the bottom layer and place your comb right in the middle.
- Since the comb is centered, you can start twisting the hair around it while combing down.
- Use a metal comb for best results.
Step 4. Twist the comb away from your face and move it all the way to the ends of your hair
Start twisting the comb until the hair around it starts to tangle. Keep pulling and twisting your comb until it reaches the ends of your hair. This will make your hair curl.
Use a comb to twist sections of hair 2-3 times. Start at the center or top of the strands each time you do this
Step 5. Point the blow dryer at your hair while twisting the comb to curl your hair
While twisting the comb through your hair, point the dryer at the comb to dry it and shape your hair. Move the dryer while moving the comb through your hair. Point the blower tip down so that the hair doesn't tangle.
- Use a medium heat setting when blow-drying your hair, then finish the process on a cold setting so that the curls stay in shape.
- A hairdryer will heat up the metal brush and help the curling process.
Step 6. Continue twisting and drying 3-5 cm sections of hair to complete the process
Continue this process all over the head. Choose a section of hair to twist and dry with a comb and blow dryer. When you're done styling the entire bottom layer of hair, move on to the top layer and keep curling your hair until it's perfectly styled.
Consider using hairspray to maintain the curls
Method 2 of 3: Braiding and Drying Straight Hair
Step 1. Moisturize and remove tangles in your hair
Hair must be wet when braiding for curls to form. So, braid your hair after a shower or slightly dampen it before braiding it. Use a brush or comb to smooth out any tangles.
- Wipe your hair with a towel after showering until it feels damp, but not soaking wet, or dip the brush in water and comb your hair until it feels damp.
- A large-toothed comb is suitable for damp hair as it minimizes breakage.
Step 2. Divide your hair into 2 sections
Use a hair tie or bobby pin to separate your hair into sections. Separate the hair into 2 sections on both sides of the head or separate it into 3-4 sections for a denser result.
If you want looser curls, you don't need to part your hair. Just make one large braid towards the back of your hair
Step 3. Braid each section of hair and secure it with a hair tie
Take a section of hair and braid it in a simple pattern, then attach a hair tie at the end. The tighter you tie it, the denser the curls will be.
If you have thin hair and separated it into sections, use a small elastic hair tie to secure it
Step 4. Dry each braid with a hairdryer on a medium heat setting
After each section of hair has been braided, turn on the blow dryer on medium heat and start blow drying your hair. Aim the tip of the blow dryer at each braid, then gently back and forth along the length of your hair so that it dries evenly.
- Do not hold the dryer at one point without moving it to avoid damaging the hair.
- Touch the center of the braid with your fingers to make sure it is completely dry.
Step 5. Unwrap the braid to see the result
After the braid dries, remove the hair ties one by one. Use your fingers to separate each braid and wiggle your hair to make the curls more defined.
Use mousse or hairspray to style curled hair, if needed
Method 3 of 3: Beautify Naturally Curly Hair
Step 1. Apply curling cream or topical conditioner to moisturize hair
This will enhance the shape of your hair and make it feel smoother. Look for products that hydrate and beautify curly hair. Drop a small amount of the liquid into your hands and massage it into your hair, starting at the roots. Even if your hair shouldn't be too wet, the surface should feel slightly damp, like you've just towel-dried it.
- If you need to comb your hair, do so before applying the product to your hair.
- Use a mousse designed for curly hair or a regular conditioner.
- Consider using a heat protectant on your hair instead of mousse to prevent the blow dryer from causing damage.
Step 2. Use a diffuser to dry your hair without tangling
If you only use a regular blow dryer to dry naturally curly hair, your hair will become frizzy. Place the diffuser at the mouth of the blow dryer to allow air to flow more evenly.
- If you don't have a hairdryer-specific diffuser, buy one at a convenience store or online.
- We recommend using a diffuser with a medium or low heat setting.
Step 3. Start directing the diffuser at the roots of your hair to dry it
Aim the diffuser near the roots of your hair while tilting your head to make it easier and make your hair more bouncy, if you like. Move the diffuser around your head and direct it towards each section of hair to make it look more beautiful.
Step 4. Dry your hair with a blow dryer until it dries about 80%
If you use a diffuser to dry your hair, it can cause frizz. However, just use a diffuser until it feels a little dry, then let your hair dry on its own to keep the natural shape you've created.
