Canaries are small chirping birds that need a cage large enough to move freely. If you want to keep a canary, make sure the cage is appropriate, spacious enough, and equipped with food, perches, and toys. Cleaning and caring for them once a week will make your canaries love their home as much as they love you.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Choosing the Right Cage
Step 1. Find a large cage
Canaries love to fly so they need a cage large enough to stay active and happy. The size of the cage must be at least 16 cm high by 75 cm wide. But ideally, buy a cage as large as possible.
So that the walnut head is not squeezed, the distance between the bars of the cage should not be more than 1 cm
Step 2. Choose a metal cage
The safe type of cage is one made of iron or stainless steel. Do not use a cage made of wood or plastic because the walnuts can bite it.
Step 3. Choose a wide cage, not a tall one
Canaries tend to fly horizontally instead of upwards. So you should choose a wide horizontal cage and not a tall and narrow type of cage.
A good cage should be square, not round. The round cage makes the perch unable to fit properly, and the canary's flight space is limited
Step 4. Check the safety of the cage
Make sure the cage is secure so that the bird is not injured or injured. There are no sharp or protruding parts in the well-crafted cage. Also check the lock to make sure it's sturdy enough.
Step 5. Purchase a separate cage for each bird
In a narrow room such as a cage, walnuts can be protective of their territory. Keeping several birds in one cage can trigger them to fight or injure each other. If you plan to keep more than one bird, keep them in separate cages.
Although you can keep a pair of birds in one cage during the breeding season, they should still be separated afterward
Part 2 of 4: Installing the Cage
Step 1. Install the cage on a high place
The cage should be installed at eye level. You can mount it on a special piece of furniture or stands. Or you can hang the cage using a hanger on the wall.
Step 2. Place the cage in the most crowded room
A living room or office can be the perfect choice so canaries can see things throughout the day.
- The room where the cage should be has good lighting, but don't place the cage in direct sunlight.
- Do not place the cage in the kitchen. Smoke from cooking activities can damage walnuts' lungs.
Step 3. Glue the cage to the wall
The canary will feel safer if the cage is against the wall. Or place it in the corner of the room so the walnuts feel even more secure. Do not place the cage in an open area or in the middle of a room.
Step 4. Place newspaper on the bottom of the cage for easier cleaning
Newspapers are the best choice because they are cheap and easy to get. Do not use cat litter or sawdust as they can interfere with the canary's breathing.
You should also change this newspaper every day
Step 5. Adjust the room temperature
The room temperature should be kept in the range of 16-21 degrees C. However, the room temperature may reach 4 degrees Celsius at night. Keep the cage away from windows, doors, or vents where dust can enter and do not place the cage in direct sunlight.
Part 3 of 4: Providing Walnuts Needs
Step 1. Always have food and water available
Place them in a different container in the cage. Avoid placing it under the perch so birds don't contaminate it. You should also change the food and drink every day. In addition to using a bowl in the form of a bowl, you can use a food container that is hung from the top of the cage so the canary can eat while perching.
Walnuts need a variety of foods such as various types of pellets, fresh fruit, and vegetables
Step 2. Install two or three perches
Canaries need enough room to fly, and perches allow them to fly between two points in the cage. You should place at least two or three perches at each end of the cage.
- Perches should be between 1-2 cm in diameter. The diameter for each perch should be different.
- Try to keep the perches at 40 cm so that there is enough room for the canaries to fly between them.
Step 3. Put in some toys
To stay entertained, canaries don't really need a lot of toys, but it's better if there are two or three toys to peck, pull, or play with. Some suitable toys include:
- Plastic ball.
- Swing.
- Logs.
- Bell.
- Balls of plant vines.
Step 4. Prepare a container for bathing in the cage
Canaries like to bathe and play in the water. You can purchase a bath tub that can be attached to the inside of the cage, or simply place a bowl of cold water in it. The water must also be changed every day or if it is dirty.
Part 4 of 4: Caring for the Cage
Step 1. Clean the cage once a week
Transfer the walnuts to a portable cage while you clean the cage. Remove all old coatings. Wash cages, food and drink containers, baths, and perches with soap and water. Allow the cage to dry completely before changing the upholstery and reinserting your walnuts.
Step 2. Do not use strong smelling deodorizer near the cage
Canaries have a very sensitive breathing apparatus. Air fresheners, scented candles, aerosol sprays, and cigarette smoke can make canaries sick. Keep these things out of the room where the cage is.
Step 3. Close the cage at night
In the evening, put a blanket or cover on the cage so that light from artificial lighting does not enter it. This will help the canary sleep so that they get enough rest.
