This wikiHow teaches you how to find out the bit number on a Windows computer, whether it's 32 or 64 bit.

Method 1 of 2: Windows 8 and 10
Step 1. Go to Start
Do this by clicking the Windows logo in the lower-left corner. The Start window will be displayed.
You can also right click Start (or press Win+X), then click System in the pop-up menu that appears. If you choose this method, skip the next 2 steps.
Step 2. Open Settings
Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the Start window. The Settings window will open.
Step 3. Click System
The icon is a computer monitor in the Settings window.
Step 4. Click the About tab located at the bottom of the left-hand column of options
A list containing the computer's attributes will be displayed.
Step 5. Look for the "System type" heading
This heading is under " Device specifications " at the bottom of the window. To the right of "System type" is the words "32-bit" or "64-bit". This is the computer bit number.
Method 2 of 2: Windows 7
Step 1. Go to Start
Do this by clicking on the Windows logo in the lower right corner. You can also press Win.
Step 2. Right-click Computer on the right side of the Start window
This will bring up a drop-down menu.
- If you already have the My Computer application on your desktop, right-click its icon there.
- If you have a laptop that uses a trackpad, tap the trackpad with two fingers instead of right-clicking.
Step 3. Click the Properties option located at the bottom of the drop-down menu
Step 4. Look for the "System type" heading
This heading is under "Installed RAM" on this page. To the right of "System type" is the words "32-bit" or "64-bit". This is the computer bit number.
Tips
- You can usually find out the Windows bit number by checking system specifications online or in stores.
- 32-bit programs work well on 64-bit computers, and this is usually useful when you want to use older programs on your computer.
