Using shaving cream, instead of just soap or water, can help you shave without cutting or scratching your skin. Store-bought shaving cream is quite expensive and it is full of chemicals that you may not want to apply on your body. Homemade shaving cream works great, and you can make it from ingredients you probably already have at home. Here's a great recipe for both men and women.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Creamy Shaving Cream
Step 1. Gather the necessary materials
This shaving cream is made from natural oils that are blended to make a soft and nourishing shaving cream. By using this shaving cream, your razor will move easily over the skin. Here are the materials needed:
- 2/3 cup shea or cocoa butter
- 2/3 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 10 drops of essential oil of choice
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- Jar with lid
Step 2. Melt the shea butter and coconut oil
Both shea butter and coconut oil have a solid consistency at room temperature, so it's important to melt them to mix well. Measure out 2/3 cup shea butter and 2/3 cup coconut oil. Put these ingredients in a small saucepan. Melt over low heat and stir occasionally until melted. Remove the pot from the stove.
- If you are using coconut butter instead of shea butter, melt it in coconut oil.
- Do not let these ingredients boil. Use enough heat to melt it. If it boils, the texture of the oil changes.
Step 3. Add and stir in the olive oil
Use a spoon or an egg beater to mix the olive oil with the melted shea butter and coconut oil.
Step 4. Add ten drops of essential oil
Some essential oils are good for the skin and also smell good. Customize this homemade shaving cream to have the perfect scent for you. You can combine essential oils to add zing to this shaving cream. For a strong aroma, add up to 20 drops of essential oil.
- Lavender, rose, grapefruit, fir, ginger, fir, and peppermint essential oils are great choices to add to shaving cream.
- If your nose is sensitive to strong smells. Just add five drops or don't use it at all.
Step 5. Cool this mixture in the refrigerator
Pour into a bowl and cover with plastic. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for an hour or two, until the mixture is completely cold. This oil mixture will harden slightly and the mixture will have a pale yellow appearance with a waxy texture.
Step 6. Mix baking soda
Remove the bowl from the refrigerator, remove the plastic and pour in two tablespoons of baking soda. Use an electric mixer or a manual mixer and beat this mixture until it's fluffy, light and creamy.
Step 7. Put it in the container with a spoon
You can use a glass jar for homemade shaving cream. But you can also use any type of container you like, as long as it has a lid. When you want to use it, you just apply this cream on any area of the body you want.
- Store unused cream in a dark cupboard, away from sunlight and heat.
- Homemade shaving cream can last for a month or two. If you want to keep it longer, try mixing the contents of one vitamin E capsule as it acts as a natural preservative.
Method 2 of 3: Foam Textured Shaving Cream
Step 1. Gather the necessary materials
The mixture for this shaving cream requires castile soap so that even the shaving cream has a nice lathering texture when you apply it to wet skin. If you like a creamy foamy texture to apply to your face, legs or underarms, this recipe is for you. Here are the materials needed:
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons shea or cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
- 10 drops of selected essential oil
- Empty liquid soap dispenser (better if this dispenser is suitable for foaming products)
Step 2. Melt the shea butter and coconut oil
Both shea butter and coconut oil have a solid texture at room temperature, so it's important to melt them so that they mix well. Measure out 2 tablespoons of shea butter (or cocoa butter) and 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Place these ingredients in a small saucepan. Melt over low heat and stir occasionally until all the ingredients are melted then remove the pan from the stove.
Step 3. Mix with aloe vera, baking soda and liquid castile soap
Pour all ingredients into a blender. Mix on a high setting for a few minutes to allow all the ingredients to mix well to prevent the oil and soap from separating later. You also get a liquid mixture with a thick liquid soap texture.
Step 4. Add ten drops of essential oil
Some castile soaps have their own scent, so you can skip this step if your shaving cream already has a scent. If you want to add your own essential oil, stir in 10 drops of your favorite oil or mixture.
- You can add up to 20 drops of essential oil if you prefer a stronger scent.
- Try one of these blends: rose and vetiver (vetiver grass), sandalwood and citrus, fir and mint.
Step 5. Pour the mixture into the liquid soap dispenser
Now that your shaving cream is ready to use, you just need to pump it out as needed. It will foam up when you apply it to your face. If this mixture separates in a container, shake it thoroughly to mix the oil and soap again.
Method 3 of 3: Two-ingredient Shaving Cream
Step 1. Select the material you want to use
The function of shaving cream is to provide a smooth surface so that the razor can move smoothly over the skin and cut the hair without dragging it. You can get a shaving cream that works like this without using expensive creams because all you need is oil and moisturizer. The following materials must be collected:
- 1 cup oil, such as melted coconut, olive or almond oil
- 1/3 cup moisturizer, such as aloe vera gel, honey or rosewater.
Step 2. Mix these ingredients in a blender
Combine the oil and moisturizer in a blender and run the machine on high for a few minutes to thoroughly mix the two-ingredient cream. You also get a creamy textured mixture that is not too thick.
Step 3. Add extra ingredients if you wish
You may find that just two ingredients is enough, but it's okay if you want to add other ingredients to modify it. Try one of the ingredients below:
- Favorite essential oil, you can use up to 10 drops.
- A tablespoon of baking soda, if you like cream with a thicker texture.
- Fill one vitamin E capsule to help preserve the shaving cream.
Step 4. Store the shaving cream in a squeeze bottle
This will keep the shaving cream fresh and make it easier for you to dispense as needed. This two-ingredient shaving cream should be stored in a cool, dark place so it doesn't damage the oil it contains.
Tips
- The oil in this recipe can turn sour if not stored properly. Store this homemade shaving cream away from sources of heat and sun to help it last as long as possible.
- If you don't have time to buy a variety of ingredients, try using a hair moisturizer, baby oil or even mayonnaise as a shaving cream.
