Siri is one of the most important achievements of the new Apple device, but if you have an old iPhone or iPod, you may be feeling out of date. Do not lose hope! There are several options for every iDevice user, which can be done from a third-party app to jailbreak your phone and install a Siri port. Follow this guide and you'll be able to voice commands on your iPhone in no time!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Getting the Siri Experience Without Jailbreak
Step 1. Install third party apps
Even if your device doesn't officially support Siri, you can still install apps that mimic its functionality. One of the most popular apps is Dragon go! from a company called Nuance.
- Nuance provides voice recognition software for official Siri products, so Dragon Go! share many of the same functions.
- Dragon Go! can interact with other services, such as Google, Yelp, Spotify, Pandora, Netflix, and many more.
- Dragon Diction allows you to write text messages and long notes using your voice, and integrates with Dragon Go!
Step 2. Use the built-in voice control
While not as good as Siri, the built-in voice control on the iPhone 4 is actually quite advanced. Just like Siri, press and hold the home button to activate it, then say your command.
- Say "Call" or "Dial" followed by a name to call someone.
- Say "FaceTime" then the name and number (iPhone, Home, etc) to FaceTime with someone.
- Say "Play" + a song, album, playlist, or artist to play a specific song. You can also ask "What" and "Who" to find out what song or who played the song, or say "genius" to play the same new song.
Step 3. Use Google Search
The Google Search app features a voice command system that allows you to interact with search and your Google account. While it doesn't integrate with many of the services provided by the iPhone, it can be useful for surfing the web.
Method 2 of 2: Getting Siri Through Jailbreak
Step 1. Jailbreak your phone
To download a version of Siri that works on older devices, you'll first need to jailbreak your iPhone. This allows you to access Cydia, which can be used to install apps that are not allowed on the official App Store.
- Your device must be running iOS 5.1.1 or later.
- This method has been known to cause problems on older devices. If your device becomes non-functional, you may have to perform a restore on it.
Step 2. Open Cydia
You must add the SiriPort repository before you can download it. Go to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add. Then, type "https://repo.siriport.ru" into the box that appears. Tap "Add Source".
Step 3. Wait for the repository to be added
When you're done, look for the "Siriport (original) iOS 6" package. Install the file and reboot your iPhone.
Step 4. Open Settings on your iPhone
Scroll down until you find the entry for SiriPort.ru. Select this, then tap "Install Certificate". This will open a Safari window showing the Install Profile screen.
Tap Install, then tap Install again in the top right corner. On the Installed Profile page, you will see the word Trusted in green letters. Tap Done then close the Safari window
Step 5. Press and hold the Home button to start Siri
There may be a delay when using this method, because the program has to communicate with servers overseas.
