This wikiHow teaches you how to delete a Facebook Messenger account on a computer. Before deleting Messenger, first deactivate your main Facebook account.

Part 1 of 2: Deactivating Facebook
Step 1. Launch a web browser and visit
Sign in first if you are not logged into your Facebook account.
Step 2. Click the down arrow in the top right corner
This will open a menu.
Step 3. Click Settings
You can find it at the bottom of the menu.
Step 4. Click Manage Accounts
This option is in the lower right pane.
Step 5. Click Deactivate your account
It's at the bottom of the gray "Deactivate your account" box in the right pane.
Step 6. Type in the password and click Continue
Step 7. Select the reason for which you want to deactivate the account
If the reason is not in the list, select Other, then type the reason in the box.
Step 8. Decide if you want to continue getting messages from Facebook
You'll continue to get emails if a friend tags you in a photo, adds you to a group, or invites you to an event. If you no longer want to receive emails like this, check the "Email opt out" box.
Step 9. Click Deactivate
A confirmation message will be displayed.
Step 10. Click Deactivate Now
Now your account has been deactivated.
- If you've never used Facebook Messenger on a tablet or phone, your Messenger account has now been successfully deleted.
- If you've used Facebook Messenger on a tablet or phone, follow the next steps below to turn off Facebook Messenger.
Part 2 of 2: Disabling Messenger on Mobile Devices
Step 1. Launch Facebook Messenger on your Android, iPad or iPhone device
The icon is a blue conversation bubble with a lightning bolt in the center. This icon is usually on your home screen or app drawer (on Android devices).
Step 2. Touch the profile photo
You can find it in the upper right corner.
Step 3. Scroll down the screen and tap Privacy & Terms
This option is at the bottom of the menu.
Step 4. Tap Deactivate Messenger which is at the bottom of the list
Step 5. Type in the password and tap Continue
Step 6. Touch Deactivate
Doing so will log you out and the account will be deactivated.
